been burning the candle at a third and possibly even fourth end lately, an advanced technique that no one talks about because it's "a bad idea"
In the devastating floods that severed an entire district from the rest of Nepal, one The Kathmandu Post journalist witnessed his childhood
For the rest of my walk to the office, we called each other back and forth, each of us trying every number we had for home. Nothing went through. When I finally reached someone — an elder brother’s house — it was his wife who answered. “There’s nothing left in the village,” she said simply. “Most of the people are gone.”
I couldn’t make myself believe it. Sole and Tupche sit nearly a hundred metres above the riverbed. No flood in living memory — in centuries, as far as anyone knew — had ever reached that high. I am 44 years old, and I have never once, in all that time, seen the river come for us. I have cousins there, neighbours, childhood friends. Everyone I have ever loved outside my own front door is from that village.
My eldest aunt was swept away. So was her son, my dai Madhu, and his wife. My other aunt — gone too, they told me. Her grandson Sijan and his wife, caught in the same water. His own son and daughter-in-law, unreachable, unaccounted for. My maternal uncle had gone out that morning to cut grass for the cattle. He never came back.
Old mosaics that still feel kinda relevant to locals 🐟 Ever since @_leevolt_ came up with this amazing mosaic brush I wanted to use it for a ridiculously big fresco kind of illu

adulthood is really like "guess what your sewer isn't working" and you're like oh why is that mister plumber and he's like "oh that's because they used to use paper for pipes" and you're like hmm i don't know a lot about it but that doesn't seem right, but it is right, they did use paper for pipes, and you're like how much is it to fix paper pipes mister plumber? and he's like "oh just $10,000 and one day and we'll dig three holes" and you're like okay mister plumber i guess what must be done must be done but then it will be a week later and there will be five holes and they will be telling you "oh actually we need to dig an additional hole in your driveway" and you're like oh but that's where my driveway is and they're like "oh yes we'll need to cut through the driveway" and you're like okay this doesn't seem right mister plumber and they're like actually it's mister gas company and mister gas company is standing there and he's like yep you gotta cut the driveway out because the pipe is six inches from the other pipe and you're like i don't think so i think that's like 8 inches and he's like nope it's six and you're like how many inches is the minimum distance and he's like six and you're like okay and it's been five days it's been five days and you don't have a driveway and you don't have toilets and you're paying $15000 because someone said "yes i think making sewer pipes out of paper sounds good" and then you'll be driving down the road to get yourself depression ice cream because you don't have a driveway and you don't have toilets and the car in front of you will be driven by a man 300 years old in the smallest honda the 80s ever produced going approximately .0001 miles per hour and the F150 pavement princess behind you will not see the small honda and will start honking at you and cursing at you and you will simply roll to a stop. you will roll to a stop in the middle of the street and watch the little honda in front of you roll on to glory at .0001 miles an hour while the truck behind you realizes they have made some sort of defcon 1 level mistake and your fitbit on your arm starts buzzing going "CONGRATS! THIS IS YOUR MOST EXTREME WORK OUT YET! YOU'RE EARNING DOUBLE ZONE MINUTES!"
Just want to add that the reader may think paper sewer pipes are an exaggeration but

In 1990, the high school dropout rate for Dolly Parton's hometown of Sevierville Tennessee was at 34% (Research shows that most kids make up their minds in fifth/sixth grade not to graduate). That year, all fifth and sixth graders from Sevierville were invited by Parton to attend an assembly at Dollywood. They were asked to pick a buddy, and if both students completed high school, Dolly Parton would personally hand them each a $500 check on their graduation day. As a result, the dropout rate for those classes fell to 6%, and has generally retained that average to this day.
Shortly after the success of The Buddy Program, Parton learned in dealing with teachers from the school district that problems in education often begin during first grade when kids are at different developmental levels. That year The Dollywood Foundation paid the salaries for additional teachers assistants in every first grade class for the next 2 years, under the agreement that if the program worked, the school system would effectively adopt and fund the program after the trial period.
During the same period, Parton founded the Imagination Library in 1995: The idea being that children from her rural hometown and low-income families often start school at a disadvantage and as a result, will be unfairly compared to their peers for the rest of their lives, effectively encouraging them not to pursue higher education. The objective of the Imagination library was that every child in Sevier County would receive one book, every month, mailed and addressed to the child, from the day they were born until the day they started kindergarten, 100% free of charge. What began as a hometown initiative now serves children in all 50 states, Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom, mailing thousands of free books to children around the world monthly.
On March 1, 2018 Parton donated her 100 millionth book at the Library of Congress: a copy of "Coat of Many Colors" dedicated to her father, who never learned to read or write.
Her family has requested donations to the Imagination Library in her honor.

Maybe there is something out there, some new discovery that will make us feel like even smaller pieces of shit. Something that explains why you still went looking for me through all of this noise. And why, no matter what, I still want to be here with you. I will always, always, want to be here with you.
To mark World Indigenous Peoples Day, we look back at the life and work of five Indigenous environmental campaigners.
a ton of people have unexpectedly followed me over the last 2 days so here is my rent-lowering gunshot:
the american south is the most racially diverse and poorest region of the united states, and any political sentiment that treats the south is stupid or expendable is inherently racist and classist. a lot of y'all are racist and classist. the south is also the heart of american culture. argue with a wall. you cannot deny that everybody in the entire world does not emulate artists from atlanta. there is vested interest in keeping the south poor and uneducated BECAUSE this is the most racially diverse region in this country. if you actually give a fuck about progress, you would fight for the south, not mock us.
