like i’m picturing him being really careful and looking at it and carrying it exactly like this while walking or riding through the woods and across rivers and up mountains and through valleys and he doesn’t drop it even once except at the very end where he tidily drops it into the volcano. frodo sam and the crew and even gollum wholly undisturbed. sauron can’t find him bc of the meditative aura surrounding him which is generated by his immense focus on not dropping it

One of the things I used to ponder sometimes when I first read the books was why they didn't encase the Ring in a little slug of iron or something.

Like, it obviously wouldn't harm the Ring, and it wouldn't stop it from fucking with people's minds, but it would definitely prevent the Ringbearer from succumbing to the temptation to put it on, just for a little bit, just this one time, etc. etc.

Of course (a) it did turn out to be necessary to put it on a few times, so maybe this wouldn't have been such a good idea after all; and (b) it falls into the same category of question as, "Why didn't they just ride the eagles to Mordor?" and the answer is that wasn't the story he was telling.
