I love how much Amity and Luz called each other “girlfriend” in this episode (2.9). As wholly in character as it is for teens (or anyone really) to be excited like that about their new relationship (especially a first relationship), it was also the writers making a point as though to say, “This is real, it’s happening, you can’t push it aside or bury it in the background. It’s integral to the characters, this world and this story and it’s important to Luz and Amity in the story to celebrate it.” And that’s significant to me. It’s an extension and an evolution of how I felt when Netossa and Spinerella would call each other “my wife” in She-Ra. Now it’s two central characters in a Sapphic relationship. The words matter, they hold power—saying them, repeating them, and making them a part of the show that can’t be easily edited out or ignored matters.
