Moments from Next to Normal that absolutely killed me
In Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling where Natalie looks out into the crowd looking for her parents and sobs, "Where the hell are they?" then "SHE'S NOT THERE!" just as Diana is talking about not being able to hold her as a baby. Made me feel like we were hearing the echoes of newborn-Natalie's thoughts as she was freshly born, cold, confused, wondering where her mother is and screaming to be held
In I've Been when Dan is cleaning up Diana's blood after her attempt and Gabe looks on in horror and guilt and what he's done... and almost like he's terrified of his father being disappointed and angry at him
In I Am the One when the family is screaming at each other downstairs, Natalie holds her hands over her ears and sobs upstairs while Henry holds her
In Wish I Were Here when Natalie is high as a kite and reaches for her mother, the only time she did that during the entire show
In Make Up Your Mind/Catch Me I'm Falling (Reprise) and Gabe looks up at his mother, knowing she's his lifeline and her decision will decide whether he gets to keep existing
In Light when Natalie holds her father tight and he holds her back - and we remember that almost the only time she got affection like that from her parents was when she was taking care of them
In Maybe (Next to Normal) when Natalie says "there'll be no more crying, not for me," and Diana says "things will get better, you'll see," and Natalie responds, "not for me"
The fact that Superboy and the Invisible Girl is a duet. Gabe sees how much Natalie is suffering. But she doesn't grieve him, so he can't see her or help her, or even really torment her
EXCEPT for his final moment onstage, when he touches her hand, and she feels him, and feels a bit of that grief. God.
In I Am the One and Diana finally gets fed up and flings a chair at both Dan and Gabe. Gabe flinches away from her and looks so, so terrified of his mother in that moment, but he returns to her side in an instant to keep being her baby
The first lines of the show!! "It's the seventh night this week I've sat til morning (hint that she's manic) imagining the ways you might have died." (MIGHT have died. If he'd been allowed to get older than 8 months.)
