Whoo! Guess who actually delivered on his “I will try to get it out quickly”-promises for once! Thanks a ton to danidanidanica for the speedy TLC helping to make this happen. And good news, fans! You won’t have to wait for two months after that agonizing cliffhanger in chapter 23 to find out what happens! Because I did… (Although, don’t be surprised if it ends up taking a while for chapter 25 to come out after this…)

So, just another bit of random weird trivia; In the magazines, the name of this story-arc actually changed halfway through; Chapter 22 was “The Magic of Scars”, but chapters 23 and 24 were “The Magic of Feelings” instead… Wanting to stay consistent, and finding all sorts of conflicting reports on what the name was supposed to be, I just opted to go with “Scars”, because 1: I think it sounds better, and 2: I think it’s a much more fitting name for an Ahito-centric arc anyway. Naturally, if whenever volume 5 comes out these chapters are all labeled as “The Magic of Feelings”, I will change it to match that, but for now… Sticking with the title from chapter 22.

But I won’t keep you with my rambling any longer. These chapters are excellent and deserve to be read, like, right now.

So in today’s breaking news… I am a slow worker. However being that this is the start of yet another three-parter, I’m going to do my best to make sure I DON’T take half a year to release the next two chapters this time.

Also you might notice a slight drop in image quality from here on, being that 1: there are no more volumes so I have to use slightly less pristine magazine-scans, and 2: this chapter was done on a different, less good scanner. I would have just redone the scans, but by the time I had access to my usual good scanner again, I was already well along the way with this story-arc and didn’t feel like redoing all the typesetting and such. Eh. It shouldn’t be THAT big a deal anyway. I still did what I could to make it look as nice as I could.

Also also there is some untranslated kanji on page 4. This was deliberate because I know for a fact that this kanji-blurb was NOT part of the manuscript Maeda and Izumi sent in, and was just some random tagline added by the magazine staff. I would have just edited it out completely but… I’m nowhere near good enough at redrawing to pull something like that off.

Alright, and with that, volume 4 is complete at last! Again, sorry it took so long, but I’m really busy these days.

In addition to the chapter itself, I’m also throwing in a batch for all of volume 4. I will probably be replacing the download links in the previous couple of chapters with just this batch, for simplicity’s sake. There are a few minor tweaks here and there from my previous releases, but nothing too major, so people who already got those individual releases don’t really NEED to replace them. I will also be putting up a seriously overdue batch for volume 3 shortly… which will probably contain a lot more tweaks and fixes.

Also on Joona’s suggestion I threw in some links for where you can actually buy these books in case you want to support the series.

Scanlation - Hibiki’s Magic Chapter 21

…Well. That just took forever and a half. Sorry about that, suddenly I was hit by a severe case of Real Life and it kinda tore my attention right off this entire project for a while. Thanks a ton to Joona and danidanidanica for helping out with the proofreading and quality-checking and such. I was going to release this together with the bonus-stuff at the end of the volume, but it’ll be another few days at least before I can get that chapter 100% done, and since it’s been so long, I figured I’d just put this out now.

So, this chapter… You know, back in 2013 when I first found out that the manga had returned from its seemingly endless hiatus, this was actually the most recent chapter released. So this is the first chapter where I actually OWN both the magazine-version and the graphic novel version. (It is also the ONLY one unless you count the bonus-chapter, seeing how this is the last chapter released in graphic novel format and the remaining six chapters have only been published in magazine-format so far…) There aren’t really that many differences of note here though, just a few touchups to the artwork and a recurring… typo? where Ikko would consistently call Hibiki “Cute researcher-san”. There’s a bit more to that but I don’t feel like going into it right now. One other thing I must say though, is that I found the dialogue in this chapter particularly fun to translate. Once you’ve read the chapter you should probably be able to see why.

So you know how in the previous chapter, the version presented here was slightly different from the magazine-version in that there were two extra pages there that had been cut from the volume for some reason? In this chapter, the exact opposite happened; The scene with Asuma and Yuushin in class did not exist in the magazine-version, it just cut straight from them in the courtyard over to them in the dorm at night. While I thought the omission of those two pages in chapter 18 were completely random and bizarre, I can at least sort of get the logic here; They might not have had time to finish those pages for their original deadline, or they may have reread the chapter later and been like “You know, it feels like something is missing…” or something like that.

Also, if by any chance there’s anyone reading this who are able and willing to TLC the series, please contact me. My previous translation-checker Kuroneko quit, and I really don’t want to put these chapters out without someone else to proofread my translations to make sure I didn’t completely misinterpret anything.

So, funny thing about this chapter. I first felt I had done a really good job translating it, and indeed when I sent it on to Kuroneko for TLC, she had relatively few things she felt needed to be changed… Then I sent it on to Joona for QC afterwards and that took literally hours because apparently I’d messed up the typesetting for pretty much every single line… So this chapter has taught me a valuable lesson, which is… I am really bad at centering lines in speech-bubbles :|

Also, this is the first chapter where I’ve seen both the magazine-version and the version printed in the graphic novels. Strangely enough, the chapter was actually two pages longer in the magazine, with there being an extra two pages after page 47 that were completely removed here… and page 48 was also completely redone to accomodate the removal of those two pages. Very odd… (There was also an 8-page prologue re-introducing the characters due to there being like two years between the release of chapter 17 and chapter 18, but I always figured that wouldn’t be included in volume 4, and indeed it was not.)

Also also… My OCD is not happy at how there was no convenient buffer-page at the end of this chapter where I could put the credits, forcing me to put said credits at the start of the chapter instead. SO INCONSISTENT O_o

Since there are a couple of differences, I've kept both translations of the chapters for completionist's sake. Thank you!

The first chapter of volume 4! Also the only one I had not read prior to the release of volume 4… Because of this though, I’d been able to get ahead somewhat on the remaining chapters, so hopefully it shouldn’t take too long to get all of this volume done.

Also starting with this volume, Kadokawa has been uploading digital versions of the series online. At one point I was considering using those digital versions instead of my usual scans, but upon actually seeing them, I found that they were a bit overly blurry and me, being a bit of a perfectionist, didn’t want to deal with slightly blurry raws when my own scans would be sharper. So the chapter ended up getting delayed for a while so I would be able to scan the whole thing for myself. The only part I actually used said digital raws for is the color-spread on pages 2-3, just because I seriously doubt I’d be able to edit those two pages together and have it look seamless.

So following up on the rather heavy chapters 14 and 15, we get a more simple, light-hearted story to finish off the volume. Makes sense. I figured I’d just release the bonus-chapter along with chapter 16 too, seeing how it’s so short and all. (Translating Maeda and Izumi’s afterword took me far longer than translating the actual chapter did…) Also, for these chapters, Joona gave me a script to compress the files down to like 1/4 of their original size, without compromising the actual image quality. Thanks for that!

And with that, volume 3 is complete! And with over a month left before the release of volume 4… I am currently out of things to release :| I mean I could move on to releasing the more recent chapters published in Comp Ace, but I don’t want to skip chapters and I’m pretty sure that at least three of them will be in volume 4 anyway, (the chapters in the magazine aren’t numbered, so I can’t say for sure how far along they are. I think the latest chapter is chapter 27 though) so I figured I might as well wait. But I’m still going to be working on them as much as I can, (like, I’ve already got the dialogue-translation for chapters presumably 19, 20 and 21 all done, but with volume 4’s release being scheduled so soon, it seems kind of pointless to even typeset the magazine-scans for them right now) so hopefully once volume 4 does come out, I’ll still be able to get the chapters out in a timely fashion.

What’s this? Another chapter out so fast? WHAT IS THIS SORCERY, CLEARLY I MUST BE SACRIFICING MY OWN LIFESPAN TO BRING THESE OUT USING MAGIC!!! No, actually it’s because akahotarubi had typeset this chapter ages ago. I made some corrections later and asked for a bit of extra QC-ing help afterwards, but most of the work on it was already done by the time I got chapter 14 out. Chapter 16 should also be out before too long though, I’m hoping to have volume 3 completed by the time volume 4 is released.

And you know, I think one could argue that this is the best chapter in volume 3. I mean, I’m not sure I’d call it my personal favorite, but in terms of the character- and world-building that takes place in this one, I’d say it’s easily the most significant one, in any case. Oh, and it’s also referenced on the front cover, so chances are Izumi and Maeda also considered this particular chapter a selling point.

Like I said, I would try to not take eight months to get this out… So I managed to get it done in two and a half instead. MUCH BETTER :D (Oh and akahotarubi, if you are reading this, sorry about just going ahead and doing this chapter all on my own, but… after two months of not hearing from you at all despite trying to contact you several times, I just had to assume I was on my own here again.)

So I was reading on the official Twitter-page for the series the other day, that volume 4 of this series is slated to be released on the 26th of February. Hopefully I’ll have all of volume 3 done by then. Oh yeah, and if you enjoyed this series you should consider buying the official release. I get the impression this series isn’t really selling terribly well, so giving it some additional support probably wouldn’t hurt.
