Nancy: Hi! I’m Nancy Drew! Since you can tell a lot about a person by where he or she lives, I thought I’d introduce myself by showing you my room. As you can see, I keep it pretty neat. Of course, I don’t spend that much time in here. I always seem to be off solving mysteries! 

Nancy: Anyway, here’s my center of operations: My desk. Go ahead and poke around. If you want to know the particulars of how I do what I do, take a look at the book titled “How to be a Detective”. It’s real helpful, especially if you’re new to the mystery-solving business. 

Nancy: And be sure to check out my scrapbook. I put memorabilia from all my past cases in there. A lot of them were pretty dangerous– and at times, really scary– but don’t say any of that to my dad, okay? He worries about me enough as it is. 

Nancy: And whatever you do, read what’s in the file called 'Case File’. That will tell you all about the mystery I’m about to try to solve. If you think you’re ready to dive into that mystery, just click the plane ticket and you’ll be on your way!

Sherlock Holmes investigates in England, especially in London, where he lives with Doctor Watson, toward the end of the 19th century and the start of the 20th.

Nancy Drew :

Nancy Drew is a teenage detective from the 20th century USA. Carolyn Keene is the pen name of many ghostwriters across the years.

By sheer coincidence both Nancy Drew and Miss Marple enter the US public domain on the same day (January 1st, 2026), and it feels like someone ought to do something with that.

this is interesting, i was thinking about both of these characters not that long ago.

nancy drew and miss marple break from the traditional, masculine detective mold of figures like holmes or poirot. their method is social rather than individual: instead of the lone rationalist genius, marple and drew work through a quiet, intuitive perception that grows through conversation rather than scrutiny, understanding rather than mastery, and a commitment to justice rather than a display of intellectual supremacy.

all this is to say that the “public domain” is perhaps where these characters have been the whole time.

in hindsight, Ghost of Thornton Hall was ridiculously ambitious, narrative-wise, for an actual children’s point-and-click game.

Blahunka was really like “yeah this game is about everlasting grief, strained family relationships and inherited trauma, mental health and the importance of having familial support, the parallel between modern capitalists and post-Civil War slavery, benefitting from slavery and exploitation even generations later, the need to earn a place in a family even when it should be your birthright, carefully crafted public personas versus reality, and possibly incest as well 😊”

and then obviously because it was a children’s point and click PC game that was only in production for like a year, it failed to come even close to adequately exploring any of those themes 💕 just amazing what they tried to tackle in such a medium.
