This is actually fascinating! The pup is actively making choices with the pictures! Watch them make the trees. They arent copying their person. They CHOSE to do that. And each tree is different, the pup intentionally chose to use different movements to make them.

They arent just plopping paint on the canvas, they ARE painting. The idea that a dog has not just the intelligence to do this but the intent to make a choice about it is amazing.

Dogs are capable of not only learning something so removed from instinct but also capable of making decisions about how and why they do that thing.

People complain sooo much about owners "anthropomorphising their pet too much" and I'll say in some ways its true, but every day we learn more and more about our pets. We used to say cats were "easier" pets cuse they were "independent", they like to be alone. Now we know that cats see their human family as their colony and need just as much social time as dogs. We used to think that cats were, at best, indifferent to human babies when they climbed into cribs or, at worse, intentionally malicious and trying to suffocate the baby. In reality, cat colonies communally raise kittens and climbing into a crib was their way to take their turn raising the new baby.

We used to think that dogs perpetuated the "pack" hierarchy with their human family and needed their person to be an "alpha". Not only is this not true, we're now learning that wolf packs dont even have that kind of hierarchy, let alone domesticated dogs! We used to think that dogs were totally incapable of understanding language because they dont have the same brain structure as humans. But more and more we're seeing dogs not only understand individual words but processing and reacting in different ways to words and commands.
