Four Books in and no one working on Mo Dao Zu Shi official English release understands that Wei Wuxian doesn’t call his Cultivation Demonic but the Ghost Path.
This to me is just extreme incompetence at this point. I don’t know if it’s the translator or someone purposely changing it afterwards but either someone doesn’t know that Gui Dao and Mo Dao are two different words and that is important because the use of Mo Dao is meant to disparage Wei Wuxian in the story.
Or someone is purposely changing it back to Demonic Cultivation because they think it sounds cooler, because of the title of the novel (it’s meant to be a misnomer) I have no idea. Either way it’s completely wrong and completely misses the point why two different words are used throughout the story to refer to Wei Wuxian’s cultivation.
This isn’t a fan translation but an official translation and mistranslations like this are going to impact people’s understanding of the story.
This is so disappointing! It actually alters the whole story because they've made such a mistake.
There are far too many people in the fandom who are already confused about WWX's cultivation method, without a mistranslation adding to it all.
@suibianandbichen okay but that’s actually really relevant and why the mistranslation really gums up the works, do you understand that?
Here, lemme go for an explanation that you might understand. Modao is commonly translated as the demonic path, but it has nothing to do with the resentful energy of the dead. Spirits, corpses, they are not at all congruent with modao and they use different energy. Not only are demons not involved in this overlap, but Modaozushi lays out this distinction very early on. Even Seven Seas gets this added in correctly when explaining it right at the start, which makes the part where they keep translating it wrong even more infuriating.
Modao is the use and abuse of living humans as weapons. Something that Wei Wuxian emphatically does not do, and thus cannot be conflated with his guidao. In fact, Modao is actually what they keep doing in CQL where they can’t use the dead on screen, and what Xue Yang is doing to people in the extras and Yi City. Their cultivation is genuinely harmful. Wei Wuxian’s is not.
In universe, it’s a slur, a sign of disrespect. They don’t care to find out what the founder is doing, they just call it evil and call it a day. Wei Wuxian is very insistent that his path is guidao, the ghostly path that uses the resentment left behind from those who have died (and is floating around causing trouble anyway, he’s actually helping by using it up so that it stops poisoning things) and even in ExR where the language is less clear, he and Lan Wangji refer to it as the ghostly path later in the book, not the evil path.
It is not a potato potahto situation because MXTX wrote this as a deconstruction of xianxia works. Xianxia has modao as a cultivation type in other works, separate from guidao. To conflate them is to fundamentally miss the whole point of Wei Wuxian’s cultivation and the treatment that comes with it.
So yes, it does matter a lot. And not just in that it’s an inaccurate translation, but in that it is actively stripping the subtlety and meaning that MXTX inscribed into her protagonist and her world and to say that it’s the same thing is a very concerning misunderstanding that just leads right back into the never ending fights of Wei Wuxian being evil when the whole point is that he’s not and people are talking shit about him by lying from the very beginning.
YES precisely this. I mentioned this before ages ago when Taming Wangxian was still active. Demonic cultivation is a wrong term.
My personal opinion is that I felt MXTX might have used the ghost path deliberately to avoid overlaps with Buddhism as there is a real Demonic/Mo Cultivation irl. 😂. And it was probably out of respect for Buddhism as well. But yes, demonic cultivation was only mentioned once in the entire novel.
It’s a matter of simple reading comprehension given that the definition was established early on in the novel. (Those who got it wrong were clearly sleeping in Lan Qiren’s class too haha jkjk)
my hot take about astrology is that i dont think it says anything in particular about anyones personality but i do like having a little shape and animal related to when i was born :)
I go to youtube. Cute animal videos are AI now. I go to instagram. There are AI influencers. I go to spotify. It's flooded with AI bands and music. I go to ebay. Every product is AI. I open netflix. Every movie has AI. I watch TV. All commercials are AI. I cancel all my suscriptions. The customer support is AI. I buy a book. It is written by AI. I talk to my friends. They tell me that AI is their new therapist. I take the subway. Some dude is talking to his AI girlfriend next to me. I go to the beach. The sunset is real. I take a pic and upload it. The photo is enhanced with AI. You can't opt out.
The primary difference between Obi-Wan and Anakin is not that Obi-Wan "hides his violence better" or that Obi-Wan "doesn't break when he does the unthinkable."
The primary difference between Obi-Wan and Anakin is that Obi-Wan acknowledges that literally EVERYONE has the capacity to go dark, including him, and he accepts that truth which allows him to understand himself on a deep enough level that he can keep from losing himself to darkness. Even if terrible things happen to him, even when he feels unimaginable loss, even if he's terrified, he doesn't lose himself to darkness because he KNOWS himself well enough to be able to control his reactions to his own emotions. He can recognize what he's feeling and why and accept that and choose how he responds appropriately.
That's literally the whole point of his fight with Maul. Yes, he kills Maul in the end, but he LOSES THE FIGHT FIRST. That's so VITALLY important to Obi-Wan's whole narrative arc. Obi-Wan loses Qui-Gon and the pain of that loss DOES consume him for a while, he DOES lose himself to his own darkness for a few minutes and it nearly kills him, very literally. It's not until he's stuck down in a pit that he is finally able to recognize that if he doesn't get control of himself and his emotions, HE IS GOING TO DIE. So he does. He controls himself, he accepts what's happened, centers himself, and only then is he able to lift himself out of the pit and defeat Maul. They couldn't have made a more obvious metaphor for Obi-Wan defeating his own darkness if they'd TRIED. This is Obi-Wan facing the physical manifestation of his fears and his pain, acknowledging them for what they are, accepting their existence, and then defeating them.
Obi-Wan isn't hiding his violence at all, he never does. Because he recognizes that sometimes violence is necessary to defend himself and others and because he acknowledges his own capacity for things like fear and anger and pain. He doesn't hide his emotions the way Anakin does, he just has better control over his REACTIONS to his emotions than Anakin does. If asked about his emotions, he's almost always incredibly honest about it, in direct contrast to Anakin's constant lies and evasiveness about his own emotions. Anakin also is the one who hides his own violence. He literally lies to the entire Jedi Order about his reaction to his mother's death. He lies about his secret abusive training of Ahsoka. Anakin also lies to HIMSELF about his own violence, and that's the real core of it. After the Tusken massacre, he admits that he hunted them down to the last child, but he also justifies it by saying that they were basically animals anyway. After the genocide of the Jedi, he excuses it to himself and to Obi-Wan by trying to pretend that the Jedi were evil and trying to take over and he was bringing peace and security and justice by murdering them all.
Obi-Wan isn't unhinged, he doesn't snap. His violence is always in self defense or in defense of others, used as a last resort when his opponent leaves him no choice. Even in his fight against Anakin on Mustafar, part of the reason that fight is TWELVE MINUTES LONG is because it was choreographed to show that Obi-Wan was constantly giving ground to Anakin, dragging that fight out so much longer than necessary out of a desperate attempt to try to talk Anakin down so that he DIDN'T have to kill him. You see him doing it more than once through the sequence until he finally decides that it just isn't going to happen and does what needs to be done with Anakin.
And yes, he leaves Anakin to burn to death, but that's so clearly not because he feels like Anakin deserves it or something malicious like that, but because he physically cannot make that final blow. He can't KILL Anakin, he can barely make himself leave Anakin to die, but he acknowledges that he can't SAVE Anakin, either. The galaxy would be better off with Anakin dead, perhaps, but Obi-Wan simply cannot strike the killing blow. THAT is what would be unthinkable, and Obi-Wan DOESN'T DO IT.
Obi-Wan is the quintessential Jedi, but not because he's just somehow more capable of holding himself together while doing "unthinkable" things. Obi-Wan is the quintessential Jedi because he understands himself well enough to KEEP himself from doing unthinkable things. It's Anakin's dishonesty and unwillingness to accept his own capacity for darkness that leads to him becoming a villain. Whereas Obi-Wan knows his own capacity for darkness, he felt it on Theed while fighting Maul, he faced a dark mirror of himself and overcame it by acknowledging it for what it was. THAT'S the core difference between these characters. Obi-Wan doesn't just magically manage to not become a Sith out of sheer narrative power, it's a deliberate character choice to show that his strength isn't in his violence or his fighting prowess but in his ability to accept himself and the others around him.

And people really do try to interact with fandom like consumers! They want « content ». They act like they can get a refund on reading a fic they don’t like. They add fanfics to goddamned goodreads without a second thought without realizing that’s as ridiculous as adding your friend’s dining room as a restaurant on yelp just so you can post a review about it
"just opening livejournal would have killed you instantly" is the truth lmfaooo

I have a suggestion
Okay, that’s IT. As a bisexual ranch dressing supporter I just can’t continue to follow you in good conscience. Why do you industrial carpet shippers all think it’s okay to use bland women as a scapegoat for premium disco culture? Maybe if you actually bothered to read the ukranian degeneracy thesis you’d understand batman’s suntan technique, but I guess you’re just too busy making free insurance consultation posts, so whatever. sometimes plushies make me cry because it’s like. they’re little guys made to be loved. their only purpose is to be held and hugged and loved. we made them because we love making things and we love loving things. and they’re so cute
Years back, I was working at a specialty store, and we got this HUGE crate of plushy toys. They were all insanely cute and squishy. I knew kids would go nuts for them, as it was the first week of December, so parents and grandparents often had kids with them while shopping for furniture, lamps, cooking equipment, lights, etc.
One night, I was working my last hour of my shift covering the Customer Service desk, which meant when I wasn't busy, I was supposed to help clean up around the cash registers, including taking back items people changed their minds about at the checkout. Earlier, I had witnessed a kid carrying thos cute plushy toy. It was a brown and white hedgehog. The kid, at the checkout, saw a remote control car and he told his dad he qanted it. The dad told him, "The plushy or the car- you can't have both" (by the way, I respect boundaries with kids and parents sticking to their guns about it), and the kid picked the car.
So, I'm cleaning up, have less than an hour left of my shift, and I see the little plushy hedgehog. Somehow, he never got put back nor had anyone else seen him and decided to buy him. He was just sitting there, slumped to the side, unattended.
It's Christmas and I'm a sentimental old sap at heart. My brain starts replaying the scene from RUDOLPH where he's on the Island of Misfot Toys, and is told a toy is never truly happy until it is loved. I picked him up and quickly took him back to the bin with the plushies but... It was empty. He was literally the last plushy toy and my boss was about to wheel the bin out. We weren't getting any more toys till November, so that meant any toys left at this point needed to sell or they'd be sent to the dump.
I brought the little hedgehog to the front, figuring someone would see him with the candy, candles, & Christmas brick-a-brack, and fall in love with him. When I finished my shift, I went to ask my manager a question and as I passed the Christmas candle display - there he sat, the sad little slumped over hedgehog plushy. No one had bought him, or even moved him.
My manager, Phillip, saw me and the hedgehog. He asked how the hedgehog got there. I told him how I'd put him there when the bin got sent back, and he was the only plushy left. Philip had kids, I figured he'd probably get sentimental and buy it for his kids. Nope. He shrugged and said he'd send it back to be disposed of.
That night, I came home with a plushy hedgehog in my passenger seat. My mom saw him and just thought he was the cutest little hedgehog and asked what I wanted to do with him. I told her the story, then added I didn't know exactly what I wanted to do with him.
My mom is a child psychiatrist, specializing in children with PTSD and brain damage that results in learning problems/issues with processing their emotions. She asked if she could have the plushy hedgehog (even offered to pay me for him, she didn't expect me to just give him over), so kids could hug him when they were upset in session.
Murphy, the plushy hedgehog that still slumps a little to the left when seated, has been hugged by hundreds of kids. Little girls have held him tight while explaining about bullies, little boys have held him tight while crying over their panic attacks, younger siblings have held him to whisper secrets while elder siblings and parents talk about self-soothing techniques, teenagers have hugged Murphy while talking about the worst day of their lives. Murphy has also been hugged by kids excitedly chatting about a new friend at school, a teen girl excited to be called by her name instead of her dead-name, little kids proudly saying they've mastered their ABCs, and even staff members who just need to come chat over a case they are having trouble with.
Every now and then, my mom brings Murphy home for a weekend. He gets washed (she calls it a Spa Weekend, to her coworkers, all of them laughing), dried, and sits outside with my mom in the sunshine to get aired out, then on Monday, they are back to work. Some kids even just ask to hold Murphy while they talk, no matter their mood or what they want to talk about. They just want to hug Murphy.
So yes. Plushies are made for one purpose. To be hugged and loved. To be a comfort.
Hello, tumblr user. Before you is a tumblr post asking you to name a female fictional character. You have unlimited time to tag a female character, NOT a male one.
Begin.
there are a lot of people on this website who are incredibly, flamboyantly wrong about things, but theyre also like……clearly in gigantic amounts of pain, and arguing with them on the internet isnt going to change the situation of either their wrongness or their pain
