part one / part two / part three / part four
stiles stiffens when he spots the mark down the back of derekâs collar.
âwhat the fuck is that?â
a barbed triskelion. kate never really had a good reason.
i donât know, puppy. maybe i just think itâs pretty.
or maybe that was just one more thing she was lying about.
âthis would be such a funny time to find out that youâre a nazi.â
âwhat?â derek says, and stiles says, âbut i know youâre not. youâre not, right?â
âno,â derek says. âwhy would you ask me that?â
âbecause thatâs like a famous symbol?â stiles says. âfor, for neo-nazis. i donât remember where, but the picture sure sticks in the mind.â
and of course. of course it is.
it couldnât have just been painful. she had to ruin him.
âso itâs, itâs just an ignorant tattoo.â stiles is nodding, and nodding. relaxing, again. âyeah. you could just remove it. or like, get it turned into⊠i donât know. a weird radioactive symbol.â
âi canât remove it,â derek says.
âoh,â stiles says. heâs starting to head back to tense. âbecause itâs, what, too sentimental?â
âbecause itâs a mark,â derek says, and he canât believe heâs talking about this. canât believe stiles hasnât figured it out by now, on his own. âiâm sure emory put his mark on youââ
âfuck you,â stiles says, and then, âwait. what did you⊠what do you mean?â
his voice is so quiet. careful, like he already knows.
âsomeone did that to you?â he says.
derekâs already peeling his shirt off. just showing him, admitting it. it canât be worse than what he already thinks.
âoh my god,â stiles says. touching the mark without thinking, and derek gasps.
âsorry!â stiles says. âsorry, oh my god. thatâs an open freaking wound, why isnât it closing?â
but marks donât heal. they donât close. itâs a message, and a warning.
a reminder. this is someone elseâs property. stay away.
âthis doesnât make any freaking sense,â stiles says. âyouâre the alpha.â
âam i?â derek says, and stiles goes pale.
itâs always good to be a disappointment. itâs a good reminder. who you are, really.
âbut youâre a werewolf,â stiles says, and derek nods slowly. âand you, your eyes goâŠâ
derek flashes his eyes obligingly.
âright, that!â stiles says. âexactly! that doesnât mean alpha?â
âiâm an alpha werewolf,â derek says. âbecause my pack is dead. because iâm the last one.â
but thereâs another word for that, too. even stiles should know that.
âomega,â stiles says. âyouâre an omega.â and the rest of it comes to him easily. âthatâs how you had blockers for me. you just had them, you didnât have to find someone who couldâŠâ
moving back to the mark, carefully. he leaves his hand hovering over it, now.
traces the swollen skin around it.
âdoes it hurt? it looksâŠâ some new shake in his voice, heâs horrified. âit looks like itâs poisoning you.â
âiâm fine,â derek says.
âno, youâre not,â stiles says. âthis is crazy.â his hand is tracing everywhere, now. down derekâs tensed spine, up his side. âis this even recent? how longâŠâ
âeight years ago,â derek says, and stilesâ hand freezes on his shoulder.
it doesnât matter. itâs not new, heâs used to it.
but the shake in stilesâ voice has him shuddering.
âsorry, iâm sorry,â stiles says, but he didnât do anything wrong. he canât help being shaken by it. finding out that his guard dog is nothing more than a disguised bitch himself. âoh my god, derek. it really never heals?â
that wouldnât be any fun.
âi wanna get it off you,â stiles says, and derek nods. âright now, i want...â
and derekâs gonna cover it up, now that he knows. heâll find some kind of paint that will cover it. or maybe heâll just tear the rest of his back open, and let it all blend together for a while. rake his claws through the shape, force it unrecognizable.
âhow about none of the above?â stiles says. heâs gone back to tracing. âhow do you get rid of it? a mark.â
you donât. thatâs the short answer. nine times out of ten, itâs just done.
there isnât supposed to be a way out of it.Â
âand the other one?â stiles says. âone out of ten. why wouldnât you do that one?â
becauseâitâs not exactly better. and even in the best case scenario, youâre still gonna be owned by someone.Â
but say there was another alpha. he can mark over it, and make his claim. the first one should fade after that.
âdo i wanna know what make his claim means?â stiles says.
derek says nothing at all.Â
âand thatâs it,â stiles says. âthe only way out of it.â
well. there is one other part.Â
the only thing keeping derek sane, when stilesâ eyes water, when he swallows. when even what derek can take isnât close to enough, and stiles is sorry. Â
âwhen they die,â derek says. âthatâs supposed to erase it, along with any other wounds they caused. as soon as emoryâs dead, stiles? youâre not gonna feel a thing from him.â
âweâre not talking about me right now,â stiles says. âwho am i killing to get rid of this? because iâll do it.â
he probably would. or heâd try, and get caught again.
oh, puppy. you brought a new toy? for me?
derekâs vision goes blood-red at the thought. goes dark, and hollow, and he blocks stiles with his body before he can take a breath.
âi donât want you anywhere near her,â he says, and stiles says, âso itâs a her, huh?â
âstop,â derek says tightly. itâs the worst version of his nightmares. everything else, and stiles.
her leaving stiles for him.
did you get my present? sorry to re-gift again. he just wasnât my size, you know?
âthatâs what happened to your pack, isnât it,â stiles says. âsome sick alpha, once you were chosen. like what emory did to my dad, before...â
derek says nothing. feels nothing, thinks nothing at all.
âyou told me you killed eleven people.â
âstop it,â derek says. he means it harsh, but it comes out begging.
he goes back to tracing, but he stops that too when derek shudders again.
âi know you donât think that i...â stiles says, and derekâs eyes burn. âyou donât think itâs my fault. even though my dadâs dead because of me.â
itâs not the same. itâs not, itâs not.
âyeah it is,â stiles says.
he covers the mark with his hands. like he can make it disappear, if he just concentrates enough. or tame the fire, make it die down for a while.
somehow stiles just trying makes it easier to breathe through. it shouldnât, but it does. it should be worse, now, more sensitive the more stilesâ palms press close, make it angrier. itâs a punishment, itâs ownership. it doesnât want anyone elseâs hands on him.
but stiles sucks a sharp breath through his teeth, and then thereâsâno fire, just a cool numbness. and then, not even numbness, or prickling. the lingering heat of her eyes on him, the sharp electric charge turning his muscles raw.
âwhat did you just do?â derek says, and stiles says, âi donât know. i just⊠wanted it gone.â
stroking at the place where it was, now, soothing it. nothing about touch there should feel soothing.
âitâs better?â stiles says, and thereâs nothing derek can say. thatâs impossible. i know thatâs impossible, its job is to make me regret my whole life.
and it works! it always works. and it feels wrong, not feeling it now. like iâm getting away with something.
itâs impossible to speak. itâs impossible, stiles still touching him.
still trying to make up for it. but thereâs nothing there anymore.
âyou did something,â derek says, finally, and stiles holds out his hand. tilts his wrist a little toward him.
âi didnât know if i could,â stiles says. âi just... i had to try.â
it doesnât make any sense, but derek takes stilesâ hand, looks at it. and at first, it just looks like the dark freckle next to it. just another mole scattered around his skin.
but itâs the mark. a shrunk-down, distorted version.
âit doesnât hurt me,â stiles says. âi mean, it stings, but barely. itâs like a little mosquito bite.â
itâs impossible. impossible, but thatâs not where the pain is.
and derek knows all his other wounds already.
âhow,â derek says, and itâs hard not to go speechless again. âhow did youâŠâ
âiâve done a couple of weird things before,â stiles says. âlike... i can break mountain ash. not by hand, but kind of by... waving it apart. and, and believing that itâll break open.â
âmagic,â derek says, and stiles says, âthat might be overselling it. and i couldnât do anything when it counted the most, so...â scoffing, a little, swiping at his eyes. âstill think my dad wasnât my fault?â
âyeah, except you donât know,â stiles says, and now his voice is getting rougher and rougher. âhe was still alive when i found him. and i couldnât... i donât know, i couldnât think at all.â
of course not. of course not, of course he couldnât.
âi guess... i was just a little too light on the belief, in that moment,â stiles says, and derek says nothing, for a while. as stiles sniffs, and derek does the only thing he can think to do.
he takes his pain. touching his pulse points, wrapping an arm around him.
stiles slumps slightly, shuts his eyes against his throat.
dips his head a little further against his shoulder.
settling, slowly. but still trembling, and derekâs never been angrier.
holding him, drawing him closer.
stiles, that some alpha hurt stiles. stole him, and tore his family away.
made his dad into a lesson.
you with me, puppy? i don't think itâs worth fighting me anymore, huh? now that you understand what itâs gonna cost you.
no, thatâs what i thought.
âi will kill him,â derek says. âemory. i promise you. slowly. and iâm gonna send you a video.â
âor we kidnap him,â stiles says. âsee how he likes it. being an omegaâs plaything.â
âtwo omegas,â derek says, and stiles looks up at him.
his eyes are impossibly warm.
âtwo of us,â he says, and sniffs again. âand then yours, too. no one gets away with it.â
âno one,â derek says.
heâs never liked the word before. omega. but itâs different with stiles this close.
with stiles this close, itâs the only thing he wants to be.
âand after yours, weâll keep going,â stiles says, and derek nods. âhave a nice revenge roadtrip. you and me.â
every alpha who thinks that they can do anything. that no one can stop them, that theyâre safe.
âwhatâs the most poetic method for yours?â stiles says, and derek hesitates, for a second.
then he says, âfire.â
âcount on it, then,â stiles says. âone nice, creative belt murder... and then weâre gonna burn it all down.â
âcount on it,â derek says, and stiles presses his lips to his shoulder. covers the spot where the mark was, something sharp glinting in his eyes.
âtheyâre gonna regret it,â he says. âbringing us together.â
