hey! you probably know me as brutus from @polytherian , but, in this past life of mine, my name was khapra. (or khapula. or khaera. there were a lot of names.)

i was/am a hivewing— a wasp-like dragon originating from the book series wings of fire. this blog, inspired by other such draconic entities on this lovely website (like this post!), is meant to record what i remember about my past.

this blog was also inspired by a poll by serpentclaws that highlighted the fact that most dragons on here did not have a society/culture, which is extremely different from my past life. so, i wanted to write about it.

hope to see infrequent essays from me, when the memories hit. thank you!

i'm curious... how many dragons out there are verbal (able to speak) and how many are non-verbal (more animalistic)? there's no strict definition of dragon here; if you call yourself one, you are one. and it doesn't have to be English, it can be anything that you consider a distinct language

Yes! The dragons of my world had several different languages, although none of them came with me to this world.

Hivespeak was what we HiveWings called the common language of our hives, and although SilkWings had their own unique dialect, it was similar enough to ours and we could all communicate without much trouble. Funnily, different hives had different accents.

LeafWings had an entirely different language, however. And I don’t know much about Phyrria’s languages, but I do know that SandWings, IceWings, and MudWings had their own languages. Of course, SeaWings had Aquatic, and I believe RainWings could communicate through their scales?

Not entirely sure of the specifics, but yes :) We could not communicate with scavengers (humans) though!

ANYWAY I'm here to say I'd finally like to take an art request or two!

THEME IS DRAGONS. I WANNA DRAW DRAGONS.

And more specifically I would LOVE to draw some dragon kintypes, linktypes, kinsonas, hearttypes, and/or system members who are dragons! Or anything along those lines! I know you folks are out there, let me draw yous!

Yes, this is completely free. No, I'm not taking commissions, sorry!

Will probably be in my usual clean lined digital style. May be shaded or unshaded, depending on what I feel like doing. Generally I find fullbodies more fun so that's what you can expect by default!

You can specify ideas for pose, expression, etc., or if you want art for a specific purpose, such as an avatar or ref sheet.

I'm happy to work from a text description if you're happy to exchange messages with me to make sure I get it right!

Not first-come, first-serve. More like I'll draw whatever sparks my inspiration and do as many as I feel like doing. My levels of energy and motivation are unpredictable so I can't really give any idea of how many I'll end up drawing.

I'm more likely to be inspired if you tell me a bit about the subject and why you'd like art of them!

Art received is for personal, non-commercial use only and cannot be modified or distributed without my permission. That means no feeding it to AI, no selling prints of it, no tracing, etc.

If you are impatient, demanding or rude then I won't do art for you. If you start being rude part way through, this still applies and I won't finish your art. Be nice!

Subject restrictions: dragons only! Not wanting to draw humanoids or "furry style" anthros rn, but beyond that go wild. I also won't draw NSFW or fetish art (no judgement, I'm just sex-repulsed '^^).

how can you have a past life from a work that a human being made up within your lifetime

i have a feeling this question isn't in good faith, but I'll answer it like it is, just in case.

I believe time isn't linear, and multiverses are real. Ideas come from different realities, and I believe that the basis for the Wings of Fire book series is another reality/'timeline' that I lived through-- henceforth, a past life.

The books were then written and published in this reality. and when I read them, I was able to unlock memories from that past life that i would've struggled to identify otherwise.

A lot of my memories are inaccurate to the books. The ideas/'visions' (as I call them) one gets from other realities are often fleeting and insubstantial-- it takes a genuinely good writer to actually flesh them out. Otherwise, we'd all be turning our dreams of other realities into stories, and 'fiction' would be quite a bit more boring.

REIMAGINED WINGS OF FIRE DRAGONS

This is a small project about redesigning Wings of Fire dragons with a small bit of speculative biology. Not evolution though; these creatures would barely evolve naturally.

Important mention: all of these redesigns are inspired by real life animals and creatures from Monster Hunter series. I do not own the originals, these are just fanart. Also, this artstyle isn't common for me, I mostly draw cartoony stuff.

SANDWINGS: inspired by scorpions, sand vipers, fennec foxes and sand cats, and also desert lizards.

SKYWINGS: inspired by eagles, hawks and pterosaurus.

LEAFWINGS: inspired by leaf-tailed geckos, anteaters and chameleons.

RAINWINGS: inspired by chameleons, boas and octopi.

NIGHTWINGS: inspired by bats and cave animals.

ICEWINGS: inspired by polar animals in general.

SEAWINGS: inspired by seals and catfish.

MUDWINGS: inspired by water buffalos and pseudosuchia.

BEETLEWINGS: an insect micry.

HIVEWINGS and SILKWINGS: inspires by wasps and moths. Descendants of BeetleWings.

Important mention 3: Lizard/Freedom. Because she is practically nothing out of these.

I can't really explain it, but I get the "soul shivers" when I look at beehives. Something deep (I'm talking SUPER deep, like Mariana Trench deep) within me just activates when I see honeycomb, bees, and hives. I feel like I'm deathly homesick.

How do beehives make you feel @hiivedragon ?

oh absolutely. it was much worse when i didn’t know i was a hivewing, but even still— honeycomb patterns make me feel so nostalgic. especially fresh beehives.

HONEYCHUNIC a gender related to chunks in honey, honeycomb chunks in honey, a jar of chunk honey. the texture and taste of the honeycombs with the honey could also be a defining factor for this gender user [IMAGE ID: A flag that follows as such, a desaturated but not pastel yellow, a dark brown followed by a lighter but still bold brown, and the same dark brown. On the dark and bold brown is a light brown bow, resembling a common cover on honey jars. Below the cap is a bold yellow, and in the yellow is a light yellow semi-circle, and there are three hexagon patterns, all containing five hexagons. One is to the left and sideways, one is on the bottom right, touching the semi-circle. The final one is in the top right, being partially covered by the bow. All honeycombs are surrounding a light yellow full circle. Below the bold and light yellows, is a desaturated, bordering on gray orange stripe, and finally, bellow that is a desaturated and grayed yellow. END ID.]

More overcomplicated dragons.

I thought I had fun with the RainWing.

I was wrong. This was FUN.

Of all the ones I've done this design is nearly identical to the original. I'm not saying that to toot my own horn, it just somehow came out like that because I found the perfect references (and avoided altering the skull too much lol). Let's talk about them!

First, an unlikely one: iguanas. I originally picked them for their spines, but when I saw their eyes and large jaw scale (or whatever it is) I knew I'd found the new reptile base for the HiveWings. I also included the little snout and under-the-chin spikes they have; it just fits perfectly for a beetle-and wasp inspired dragon.

Speaking of beetles and wasps: I took heavy inspiration for the HiveWing's 'beak' from wasp mandibles. I love the way the mouth looks originally and wanted to preserve and exaggerate it. So, when creating the beak, I combined the jagged jaws of wasps with the curved beak of an African fish eagle. To top it off I referenced the rhinoceros beetle (obviously) for the horn on the nasion.

(The nasion is a point where your nose meets your forehead between your eyes). The HiveWing's horn isn't directly on it but I couldn't think of another word.

I actually wanted the entire head to have an insect-like feel, that's why the snout and forehead are built from large plates (once again referenced from rhino beetles).

Lastly, besides the lion-inspired teeth, an incredible animal called the nyala was responsible for the back horns. Whoever photographed that bull in that exact angle: thank you.

Let's see how badly I mess up the LeafWings next week. If you've read this far, perhaps let me know if you would like to see all of my personal headcanons for the LeafWings? For Alate Atta's Ascension I use a design where they have four wings and extra frills to look like leaves. I can do one closer to canon where they're more like a Pyrrhian tribe and another where they visually fit in with the other Pantalan tribes. Let me know!
