What is stimming?

This is going to be a long post.

Stimming is a slang term in the autistic community derived from the medical term self-stimulation, although the term can be used for a wide variety of self-soothing behaviours as well. The term is used widely in the autistic community and can refer to more obvious stims like hand-clapping or more subtle ones like muscle clenching. 

Autistic people may stim either deliberately or automatically. Sometimes you’re not even aware that you’re doing it. Some stims might even feel like they happen to a person rather than are done by them, such as when they’re associated with zoning out or if the impulse is very difficult to suppress (if this is the case, it might even feel akin to OCD).

Some stims are very pleasing to engage in but other stims may be unwanted by the autistic person for a variety of reasons. For example, they may be harmful or perceived to be socially inappropriate. Unwanted stims can include jaw clenching, tooth grinding, hair pulling, skin picking, finger biting, and others. Sometimes these urges are there and can be avoided by switching to another stim, but other times they can cause problems for an autistic person.

Some autistic people are proud of their stims, and may even feel sorry for non-autistic people for not being able to enjoy the sensory experience of stimming as much as autistic people do. However, due to social stigma, other autistic may feel embarrassed or ashamed of their urge to stim and may suppress it or only do it in private. 

Stimming, in general, is life-enhancing. Many autistic people consider it essential to their mental health. Stims can provide an escape and act as a coping mechanism. 

Stimming can include any of the senses:

Sight: Visual stims might include zoning out while watching shadows of light on a wall, looking into a light source, rapidly blinking, and so on. 

Sound: Auditory stims can include listening to sounds, making sounds, or repeating them (such as repeating phrases or words over and over).

Taste: Eating spicy foods can be an enjoyable stim for some, or eating food with specific textures or colours.

Smell: This might include smelling “smelly” things like essential oils, or smelling different items like the sleeve of a jumper you are wearing, and so on.

Touch: Touch is a very common stim as it can be very subtle, such as tapping your fingers on your leg or holding your own hands, or touching things around you.

Temperature: Feeling hot and cold things, or making yourself either hot or cold.

Proprioception: This is the sense of self-movement and can involve running, rocking, pacing, spinning, jumping up and down, or dancing (even when there is no music!).

Pain: Pain can feel pleasurable to someone regardless of whether they are on the spectrum or not. The difference is context, quality, and amount. Examples of pain as a benign stim include gently biting your lip, pinching your skin with your fingernails, hair pulling, or eating a very spicy chilli pepper. 

Balance: Standing on one leg, spinning, walking on tiptoes are all examples of balance stims.

Vibration: Humming can cause one’s lips to vibrate, electric massagers can vibrate muscles, and so on.

Various internal stimuli: some autistic people might allow themselves to feel hungry or thirsty, or hold their breath.

There is also the sense of time, but I think you’d have to be another kind of being altogether to use that as a stim… that’d be, like, The Highest Level Autistic: Able to Stim With the Concept of Time.

Anyway, I digress. 

Non-autistic people “stim” as well, but not to the intensity as autistic people do. If you are reading this and thinking, “Well, everybody does that…” you’re partially right. Non-autistic people should be able to relate to some stims but won’t necessarily be able to relate to how important they are to autistic people. This is partially evidenced by non-autistic people telling autistic people to “just stop it”. Autistic people need to stim.

After reading the manuscript, my friends and editors suggested I abbreviate the first hundred pages, which they found very difficult and demanding. Without thinking twice, I refused, because, as I insisted, if somebody wanted to enter the abbey and live there for seven days, he had to accept the abbey’s own pace. If he could not, he would never manage to read the whole book. Therefore those first hundred pages are like a penance or an initiation, and if someone does not like them, so much the worse for him. He can stay at the foot of the hill.

Entering a novel is like going on a climb in the mountains - you have to learn the rhythm of respiration, acquire the pace; otherwise, you stop right away. Some novels breathe like gazelles, others like whales or elephants. Harmony lies not in the length of the breath but in its regularity. And if, at a certain point (but this should not occur too often), the breathing breaks off and a chapter (or a sequence) ends before the breath is completely drawn, this irregularity can play an important role in the economy of the story; it can mark a turning point, a surprise development.

Rhythm, pace, penitence… . For whom? For me? No, certainly not. For the reader. While you write, you are thinking of a reader, as the painter, while he paints, is thinking of the viewer who will look at the picture. After making a brush stroke, he takes two or three steps back and studies the effect - he looks at the picture, that is, the way the viewer will admire it, in proper lighting, when it is hanging on a wall.

What does it mean, to imagine a reader able to overcome the penitential obstacle of the first hundred pages? It means, precisely, writing a hundred pages for the purpose of constructing a reader suitable for what comes afterward.

i've noticed that people don't leave the same kind of unhinged compliments under fanfics that visual artists usually receive (eg, "i want to eat your art"), so i've come up with a list that you need to start employing when your friends send you their WIPs and when your favorites update on ao3 but you're having a hard time commenting something that sounds intelligent and you still want to support them

i had a thought of "do people not know what AUs are anymore?" and then i remembered nobody explains fandom stuff to new people anymore so it is entirely plausible people genuinely don't know what AUs are and nobody has explained it to them, so for today's lucky 10,000:

"AU" stands for "Alternate Universe" or "Alternative Universe" (same difference) and is basically any thought scenario for a fandom that isn't canon and can't fit within the canon universe. If it takes place in the canon universe but something is notably different, that is typically what's known as a "Canon divergent AU," because it diverges from canon.

an AU can be absolutely anything. There's a couple of widespread pan-fandom au scenarios that often get thrown around, like coffee shop aus, genderbend aus, hanahaki aus (hanahaki is a whole thing in itself i'd recommend researching on your own), etc. One you might hear sometimes is "crossover AU" which is when you have characters from one fandom interacting with characters from another.

You can have as many aus as you want. They can be whatever you want and you can do whatever you want in them. It's a sandbox for you to play around in and explore how things would be different or how the characters would act in those circumstances or environments. Maybe they have different relationships with each other. Maybe they behave slightly differently. Or you can just say "Okay, [x] is true. How did they get here? How would things have to be different for this to occur?" which can also be fun.

If you are ever confused about why people ship something that seems completely out of the blue or doesn't make sense to you in the canon setting, there's a good chance they like it in an AU setting! Not everything everybody is interacting with is necessarily the canon! Not everybody wants things to exist in canon and just want to explore playing dolls in a different sandbox and that's okay. And their sandbox might look a lot different than yours, and that's also okay. You have the freedom to make your sandbox whatever you please. Do whatever you want forever. Get funky with it. AUs are fun.

Okay that's my schpeal. everybody go have fun and play nice now.

hi, did you know that projecting onto characters or changing aspects of their identity to reflect your personal experience is okay?

did you know that if it’s not racist, antisemitic, or furthering other harmful stereotypes, it’s alright to do?

did you know that if you research well and do it with taste, you can make characters other races or religions or sexualities?

did you know that’s valid if the source material has them as identities that are treated as the “norm”? because representation is an issue and making a character a minority race or a LGBT identity can help further positive representation in fandom?

did you know that although this can be done harmfully, and those who use this to hurt other groups or people should be called out and educated, this is not an inherently bad concept?

did you know that one of the ways people interact with media is relate to characters? project onto them? create alternative universes where maybe, just maybe, they aren’t all white and cis and male? because, gasp, that’s not the way most of the world works?

did you know people transform stuff all the time? people ship parts of the same person, people age characters down and up? and although it’s more loaded to make them a different religion or race, when done well and for good reasons, that’s just another aspect of interpretation?

did you know that fandom is, in its very nature, transformative?

and did you know that it’s fine to have issues with doing it yourself, but that doesn’t justify stopping others from doing it?

yes. yes, there are some very harmful headcanons in this fandom. but if I want to make an AU where the characters are nonbinary, because I’m nonbinary, that’s okay. if someone wants to make an AU where characters are jewish, because they’re jewish, that’s okay. if someone wants to (god forbid /s) make an AU where they’re not all white cis men, and they do it with respect, that’s okay.

we don’t have to find another media. we can tag our stuff appropriately so you can avoid it. we can hold ourselves and others accountable for harmful representation and stereotypes.

we can project. we can transform. we can put pieces of ourselves in these characters, and that’s okay.

we will not find another fandom if we don’t want to. this fandom has room for all of us. this fandom has room for interpretations and projection and people who are not white or cis or male, and want to see themselves in media.

we will be respectful, and you can avoid our content if you’re comfortable with that, but we are not going away.

representation in media is slim. we will make our own. and if you are extremely uncomfortable with that, I ask you, sincerely, to think about why that is. it’s valid if it squicks you out. it’s valid if you’d just rather not engage. it’s valid if bad experiences with stereotypes make you wary of the whole thing.

but if the very idea of people projecting onto characters, transforming and interpreting and creating something new, is something you don’t like?

maybe you don’t really understand what fandom means.
