So like….walk with me here for a moment.

We know in ACOWaR, on the first night Lucien was in Velaris, he comes down for dinner and he’s dressed to the nines. Feyre spends a good amount of time describing how he “truly looks the part of a High Lord’s son” with a coat buttoned all the way up and tight pants to show of his thighs and nice knee high polished boots. She also notices he has taken care with his hair I believe.

Now, arguably, this was because he did not know what kind of affair dinner in the Night Court with Rhysand was gonna be, and, you know, better overdressed then underdressed. This is certainly supported by him literally asking Feyre what dinners would be like. BUT

We know Nesta came down for dinner shortly after this. And I can’t help but think that part of the reason Lucien took special care to dress up and make himself look like a “High Lord’s son” is because he was hoping Elain would come down as well. Elain who was engaged to and mourning the loss of a human lord’s son.

Like he was hoping that Elain would come down for dinner and he wanted to make a good, favorable, first impression on her. 🥲🥲🥲

You cannot convince me that SJM didn’t intentionally write Lucien to be the ultimate payoff character. He says the wrong thing at the worst possible time and always pays for it. He loses his love, loses his home, is rejected by his own family, can’t truly belong in Spring, isn’t fully accepted in Night, and spends most of the series with nowhere that’s really his. Despite all of that, he remains gentle, compassionate, endlessly loyal, and still chooses kindness. If anyone has earned the happiest ending in the entire series, it’s Lucien.

And you also cannot convince me that SJM didn’t intentionally write Elain to be the same. She’s underestimated because she’s gentle, mistaken for weak because she’s kind, and expected to become whatever everyone else needs her to be. She survives the Cauldron, loses the love she chose, is thrust into a world she never wanted, develops terrifying visions no one truly understands, and spends much of the series with people deciding what’s best for her instead of asking what she wants. Yet she never loses her softness or her compassion. If anyone has earned the chance to choose her own future, and find a love that sees every part of her, it’s Elain.

They are the perfect set-up for a sweet, soft, true love story. Sigh
