Long flat roads, tons of corn, animals in the headlights, ominous billboards… must be the midwest.
Out of the rustling wheat, you see a human-looking hand emerge. You know deep down it is not human.

for one hour each day it rains. for one hour each day it is blisteringly hot. the next hour it is snowing. the next, hail. no one knows what season it is.
zebra mussels coat the bottom of every lake. the beaches are permanently stained red from the bloody feet of those foolish enough to swim there.
skeletal remains of shipwrecked freighters rise high out of the water, illuminated by the green glow from a hundred lighthouses. when you get close to them you are overwhelmed by the drone of a fog horn that seems to live inside your head. your eyes roll back, your boat is flooding. get away from the wreck. you are surrounded by lighthouses. where did all these lighthouses come from.
what’s in the pasties? some joke that it’s humans but you know the truth. the black squirrels with demonic red eyes would take over otherwise. the pasties keep michigan safe.
the horses on mackinac island are the same ones that have been there since the beginning of time. everyone talks about the Grand Hotel but no one ever actually goes there. it smells like fudge and rotting meat. it is where the horses keep their humans.
unsuspecting tourists cross to the wrong side of sleeping bear dunes into the sharp-toothed maw of the actual sleeping bear. this is how she’s fed. everyone lives in terror of when she will awake.
it is march 23rd. all of the sudden everyone around you begins chanting at once. O B E R O N everyone drones. people fall to the ground, limbs jerking, foam dripping from their mouth. it smells like oranges and beer. strangled cries echo throughout cities O B E R O N they scream. the bars are locked and shuttered, the patrons trapped inside.
thousands of cars line the highway, snaking down I-94, I-96, I-75. they are waiting for the dark man to return from o h i o. he will distribute the fireworks. later the sky will seem as though it is on fire, the sound of explosions never ceasing. it is fourth of july weekend. night never comes.
no one has ever left michigan adventure.
the ghost of henry ford appears in the passenger seat of anyone with a foreign car. he opens his mouth in a silent scream. bugs pour out. he disappears. toyotas and audis are found abandoned everywhere along the road, the bones of their drivers picked clean.
petoskey stones are found on the beach each morning arranged in the shape of strange circular sigils. no one knows what happens if you step in the center, but the life-like garden sculptures sold at every small town art fair offer some clues. their stone eyes plead for you to help them.
time does not exist in meijer. it is a respite from the ills of the outside world. although not technically trapped, many never leave.
all residents are tested each year to ensure they have ingested the required amount of better made chips and faygo. if not, their hands are cut off. without their hand maps, these criminals wander the state, unable to find their home. “where are you from?” people ask. the deviants turn their dead eyes toward their stump dripping blood and point to the air above it. it is no use. the ultimate punishment.

a small boy appears in the cornfields around your house. you ask him where he came from. he says nothing, but reaches for your hand. he presses his finger into your palm.
the lakes are angry and they send snow. the people whisper while warming their hands, “it’s not as bad as ‘78.” once, you ask your father, “what happened in ‘78?” he sniffs the air. “winter is meant to end,” is his nonreply.
the lake towns are flooded with tourists who never travel from very far. the clerk at the rental cabin has never checked someone out. tourists still check in.
you have an upset stomach and your mother brings you a ginger ale. the name on the bottle is a famous alchemist who went mad. it’s also your last name. you try not to think about it.
the only way out is through a cut of land called indiana, ever since the wolverines tore through ohio. you’ve learned to sleep through their screams.
it’s fall and the word on everyone’s lips is “lions.” you’ve never seen one, but every fall, you hold out hope. within a month, you assume they’re dead.
your cousin invites you for a visit and tells you not to park in the garage. later, he opens the garage door to show you a sea of drink containers. you take a step in. “be careful,” he says, “those are worth something.”
you are from kalamazoo. you’ve lived your entire life in kalamazoo. your family and friends are all in kalamazoo. you’re watching tv one day and you hear it. “kalamazoo isn’t a real place.” you look down. your body flickers.
Roadside signs in the Upper Peninsula, Michigan
it’s always like this
it never changes
a guide for traveling up north
1. do not look at the corn for to long, you will not like what it hides.
2. the gas station employees may seem human, but the woods behind the store tells a different story.
3. the lakes are cold, and filled with large rocks. do not go in past your waist. the very old have no empathy for the young.
4. there will be a man named frank in the hotel room next to you. talking to him always brings the bad end.
5. when awakened by a sound, check the time. if it is past 8, do not get up. do not move. you wouldn’t enjoy what the darkness hides.
6. you enter one town. its raining. you enter another town. the snow is coming down in sheets. you enter another town. its dry, not even the asphalt is wet.
7. the hike may seem fun at first but soon you will past the same sign you saw hours ago. do not move. do not speak. they can smell you.
8. your elevation is normal. you swear you’ve been driving in a straight flat line for hours. you check your elevation. you’re halfway up a mountain.
9. yes the animals are adorable. but do not touch them. do not look at them for longer than needed. they, like most things up here– are not of this earth.
10. things get smaller as it gets colder, right? you look out the window. you don’t recognize that bug, but it’s at least the size of your fist.
11. if you pass a rest stop with more than four cars parked, it is safe to enter. but if there are none, keep driving. DO NOT under ANY circumstance, look back. there is a reason all the lights are off.
12. during the summer, do not let the children stay out past 6, sometimes he gets hungry and most nights the townspeople cannot keep him at bay.
13. if a berry bush appears in your yard one random summer, do not eat them. they are a trap.
14. not all roads are safe, always carry salt.
15. if you feel a certain tightness in your chest while driving, do not look out the windows, keep your eyes forward, do not look at the cornfields, it is a test.
16. trust your gut. roads that were there last night might not be there in the morning.
17. you will pass many corn fields on your way up here. do not be alarmed when they are not there on your way back. be thankful.
18. the locals will ask where you are from. do not tell them, they aren’t human. not anymore.
19. the locals might be a bit weird, but after a few months you’ll wonder why you ever lived anywhere else. they’ll die for you. you will do the same.
20. the fish will stare. if you feel a sudden tightness in your chest and chill in the air, stare back. do not break eye contact under any circumstance.
21. do not wander the corn maze at fairs with a party of less than 4 people. it may seem fun but you will not enjoy what you find at the center.
22. if you are traveling the week of your date of birth, do not take spoken directions from anyone, do not stay at rest stops. do not stop at places for more than 20 minutes, they lurk just behind that stalk of corn.
23. if you see the corn rustle, do not follow it. it is bait.
24. the wind will howl and you will hear thumps on the roof of your car, do not speed up, he takes it as a challenge.
25. if the grass is higher than your mid calf, do not stay for long.
26. in the lake, if you feel something brush your leg, swim to shore.
27. do not bring religious items with you. they will not protect you. they carry a scent trail.
28. yes! that rock is very pretty, do not photograph it. do not take it back with you. it is not what your eyes tell you it may be.
29. if it is winter. do not go into the woods. it doesn’t matter if it is 47°f. it doesn’t matter if there is no snow. he does not take those things into consideration.
30. there are days when it is foggy. if it is raining and your headlights do not pierce the fog, be on high alert.
31. do not be afraid of the snow, if it is light and fluffy. however if it is the opposite, do not leave the house.
32. sometimes you will forget time. the corn mazes will seem to have to exit. when this happens you will remember eventually, the corn maze will not.
33. do not look put the windows at night. you will not enjoy what you find.
34. the chirping is most likely not frogs. pray that it is isn’t.
35. when you pass a corn field, do not look for the scarecrow. do not meet its gaze. it will know you looked. you will see things that are not easy to forget.
36. you may hear birds at odd hours of the night. do not inquire about them, they enjoy visiting in this form the best.
37. out near the woods, the stars are big and bright at night. so are the eyes reflecting the porch light.
i am SO PRETTY from a little distance, in a shaky selfie, passing by, in low lighting. it’s the added mystery. NO u don’t have to come closer, this is fine
Michigan Gothic
* The snow is falling. The snow is always falling. Everywhere you look there is a blanket of white and everyone has learned to ignore it. There is a fog over your eyes but that’s just how it is. Sometimes you ask if summer will ever come; no answer is given. You’re not sure one will ever be. What is summer?
* There are footprints in the snow in your backyard leading to the door but never leading out; when you ask, nobody knows whose they are.
* You run from the city to the country and see the all the little houses, spread far from each other. You wonder what they’ve seen; what they know. You find yourself in the city again. Twenty minutes has passed.
* There are no cornfields near you but everyone talks about them. You think once, when passing by a field halfway across the state, you glimpse a tall creature through the stalks. You do not ask what it is. Forget it ever appeared.
* The winters are worst when the wind is biting and silent; when the bugs are dead and the trees whisper about you as your pass. The bus stop is always just a little bit further ahead.
* The stray cats are everywhere and nowhere all at once. Sometimes you think they’re the ones triggering your lights at night. Other times, you’re not sure is them at all. You don’t think you want to find out the answer behind it.
* Four people have drowned in the lake this week. You can’t remember the names you read in the paper. Since when do you read the paper? The room is deadly silent except for the clicking of the clock. The batteries ran out years ago.
* The trees are old, old and quiet. Sometimes at night, you can hear them chant. The language is strange but you are comforted by the words. Maybe if you knew, you wouldn’t be. They aren’t your friends and you should be wary. Their eyes are always watching.
* You can never tell if the moon changes. You think you saw it’s phases in a book, once. It never looks anything less than full. The night is so dark.
