Anna x Bates Appreciation Week 2020

I plan do to a Anna x Bates Appreciation Week April 12-18, as that lines up with when they met in 1912 and about when they married in 1919.

I don’t know how many people would be interested in joining in, since I think most of the fandom has moved on, but if anyone is still out there and wants to make something, anything, to celebrate them, please do! Here’s a link to one we did were we had themes for each day. I’m not going to follow any themes this year myself though (and here’s a link to the year we didn’t do themes, for further inspiration if needed).

Here’s the thing, though. If you asked a conservative “Would you let the statue of liberty burn to save one life?” they’d probably scoff and say no, it’s a national landmark, a treasure, a piece of too much historical importance to let it be destroyed for the sake of one measly life. 

But if you asked, “Would you let the statue of liberty burn in order to save your child? your spouse? someone you loved a great deal?” the tune abruptly changes. At the very least, there’s a hesitation. Even if they deny it, I’m willing to bet that gun to their head, the answer would be “yes.”  

The basic problem here is that people have a hard time seeing outside their own sphere of influence, and empathizing beyond the few people who are right in front of them. You’ve got your immediate family, whom you love; your friends, your acquaintances, maybe to a certain degree the people who share a status with you (your religion, your race, etc.)–but beyond that? People aren’t real. They’re theoretical. 

But a national monument? That’s real. It stands for something. The value of a non-realized anonymous life that exists completely outside your sphere of influence is clearly worth less than something that represents freedom and prosperity to a whole nation, right?

People who think like this lack the compassion to realize that everyone is in someone’s immediate sphere of influence–that everyone is someone’s lover, or brother, or parent. Everyone means the world to someone. And it’s the absolute height of selfishness to assume that their lives don’t have value just because they don’t mean the world to you. 

P.S. I would let the statue of liberty burn to save a pigeon.

Mr Bobby was not a kids’ TV show character. He was a spoof character from a light entertainment show called Noel’s House Party. The show featured a section called ‘Gotcha’ where celebrities were set up and filmed on camera doing stupid stuff. Mr Blobby was a fake kids TV show that celebrities were invited to 'guest star’ on and when the whole thing came out as a spoof, Noel would be revealed inside the suit.

Eventually the skit became so well known that they couldn’t use it for Gotchas any more, because everyone knew it. Mr Blobby became a household icon, a regular character on the show outside of the Gotcha section but still used to humiliate celebrity guests and there was a novelty Christmas single released one year too in the vein of the kids TV format.

Celebrities hated Mr Blobby because they were paranoid about being set up an humiliated on prime time TV and made to look very very stupid. Mr Blobby would 'charge’ people and physically knock them over, leaving them flailing on the floor unable to get up. Seeing him on your horizon or heading your way was rarely a good sign!

We had a family funeral this week and we were chatting to the celebrant after the service. Apparently she conducted a funeral last month where one of the mourners was dressed up as Mr Blobby.

Some old housemates of mine were Syrian Orthodox. At their church different members of the church took turns baking the bread that would be consecrated for the Eucharist. This was all well and good until one woman baked raisin bread. This led to the memorable occasion of a rather flustered priest, who had not seen the bread until that moment, declaring, “This - except for the raisins - is the Body of Christ.”

Anna x Bates DA Film Spoilers

Here’s the movie spoilers for A/B in Downton Abbey Returns!

No new clips for them outside of the trailers, and Brendan in some random behind the scenes shots. The TV show clips actually had a lot of A/B + Baby Bates from S6CS (yay, at least PBS finally thinks he’s no longer a spoiler!), idk if that’s a sign, but like… show me film footage with their son, cowards… *cough*

Anyway, after a very quick summary of A/B as a couple and some old, dated, interviews we get something new…

GARETH: “[So many bad things happened to them,] that’s why it’s so great that at the end of season 6 that they have their child and we see them content and in a very good place, and that continues into the movie. We see them as a strong, united couple, who will have a really important role to play in the story of the movie.“
