@historie-heretic
the thing i love about the hawke family is that it's entirely a reflection of hawke. hawke is shaped by the family, in the sense that all people are shaped by where and how they grow up, and the family is shaped by hawke in turn, because you create the family by your choices.
carver is your surviving sibling because you chose to be a mage, but carver is also carver because his siblings were both mages. i'm not here to tell anyone what to think, if you think carver would have been the same person regardless, that's totally fine, but i think the carver who grew up with an "ally", a non-mage sibling who was like him is a fundamentally different person than the carver who grew up having to protect two mages.
similarly, the bethany who grew up with self-loathing isolation... i think that's a different person than a bethany who grew up with a mage sibling, particularly if that sibling felt differently about their magic. that's a bethany who couldn't blame only herself for the family's situation, who wasn't always the odd one out, the one with the biggest and worst secret.
i love that the narrative bends around hawke, creates an arc where the defining feature of the surviving sibling is isolation. loneliness.
malcolm is the ghost in the machine the haunting at the center of the narrative, yes, but he is also shaped in your image. hawke is canonically like malcolm, which means that malcolm is canonically like hawke. leandra, who loved him, who gave up everything for him, then changes too, maybe more subtly. but who hawke is has to reflect on who leandra is, because leandra becomes the type of person who would anchor her life around a person like hawke.
okay tumblr olds. tell me in the tags what piece(s) of media you've never seen/read/played despite them dominating your dash for months or years
The best couple in dragon age is the dramatic gay blacksmith and his loving demon husband who is just trying to make sure they don't starve.
desire demons are like “i’ve ensorcelled this templar and will continue to suck out his energy until he dies believing I’m his wife and they will find his body unmoved from this spot” and “kill all of your friend’s family for POWER and bewitch your own family” and “let’s stick some demons into templars, that would be fucking hilarious” (okay, it was) and “i will possess this CHILD for funsies” and “i will possess this other child for funsies” and “I WILL GROW RED BLIGHTED LYRIUM CRYSTALS INSIDE OF PEOPLE, CAUSING HORRIFIC AGONY, AND I WILL TELL THEM I CAN REVERSE THE PROCESS--WHO KNOWS IF I’M LYING OR NOT--IF THEY SUBMIT TO SOMETHING EVEN WORSE, presumably demonic possession”
then there’s this guy, and the extent of his manipulations is, “Hi! Please stop bringing my husband fancy orders you won’t pay enough for, we need him to make sellable things so we can afford to pay the grocery bill.” and then doing a full turnaround like “Oh! Warden Commander, we are SO pleased to be at Vigil’s Keep--stop grumbling, dear--we’ll help you with anything you need.” while his husband goes behind his back to get cool commissions for his own gratification.
I hope these radqueer/pro para cunts end their lives tbh
Damn so u want people to kill themselves because they know paraphilia =/= groomer and that paraphilic disorders deserve support and acceptance as much as any other disorder?
yes absolutely
i’m sorry but i can’t ever be friends with someone who would sexually assault someone else.

Dragon AGE 2
oh are you now, Anders?
no more tiktok tonight i think
I'm sure I'm not the only one to say this but also the line "I'm charming" from Anders is such a deeply painful line when you think about it. He says it in this banter with Fenris:
And while it's totally a dick move for Anders to say what he does here, it can also be read in the light of genuine curiosity.
I'm going to go on a minor tangent about Fenris and Anders here in order to make my point. I'm not the only one to point out that Anders and Fenris mirror one another in plenty of ways. I think in act 2 they come closest to seeing this and acknowledge it. As that one famous post points out, in decent Fenris seems to genuinely be offering some form of acknowledgement that he understands what it is like to kill someone you wanted to protect (as he did with the Fog warriors). But also in act 2 Anders asks Fenris if he's ever considered suicide as a slave here:
I have thought a lot about why Anders would just...ask this pretty hefty question. And my conclusion is that he's asking because he considered suicide in the circle, and he's semi-trying to connect with Fenris over something which he believes perhaps only Fenris (out of everyone in the da2 group) will understand.
And that's what I think he's doing when he tells Fenris he doesn't have the temperament of a slave. He IS being a dick, make no mistake. But also...Anders doesn't get how Fenris could have survived under the wrath of people who had such power over him, if he wasn't charming.
Because Anders 'is charming'
When Fenris asks why the templars didn't kill Anders and Anders says its because he's charming, he's not being glib. That's CANONICALLY why despite his multiple escape attempts he did not get made tranquil. Look at this extract from chapter 5 of World of Thedas Vol. 2:
Anders being charming LITERALLY saved his life through multiple escape attempts. And considering the way he acts in Origins with that sort of easy jokey manner he partly puts to rest by da2 its clear he has grown up knowing he HAS to act like that in order to keep himself alive. Fenris genuinely puzzles him because how could he possibly survive in a situation where someone had immense power over him, if he was not charming.
And it's so sad. This one little piece of banter is so sad. Its sad because Anders HAD to put on that front to stay alive. Its sad because act 2 is the closest Anders and Fenris come to seeking an understanding with each other, but because of their prejudices against the other it ALWAYS misses the mark and ends up coming out bitchy and misheard by the other.
And I just. It makes me feel emotions.
