This seems really whiny to me. Like, I agree with you, work sucks, but our ancestors didn’t get to browse tumblr at their desks or have the option to gleefully spend their ENTIRE WEEKENDS horizontal on the couch stuffing their faces/watching tv/playing video games/wacking off.  They didn’t have weekends. They just slaved away as fucking peasants from dawn to dusk until they died in childbirth or got the consumption.

I am perfectly happy working 8 hrs a day because I don’t have to:

grow my own food

find my own clean water

heat my house

Hi, I study social and cultural anthropology. Humans working 40+ hours a week is 100% an industrial revolution thing and was not normal in the early stages of our existence. In fact, hunter and gatherer societies that still exist to this day spend about 15-20 hours a week TOPS working. The rest is dedicated to sitting around and telling stories and jokes, dancing, singing, eating, sleeping, fucking and so forth. Read a damn book.

Brazil is STILL on fire: Save Pantanal

Pantanal is the world’s largest freshwater wetland, and it has been on fire due to intentional commercial clearing. from January until the end of August, the fire had already burned an area as large as 12 cities in São Paolo - 18,646 km2 - somewhere near 10-12% of the entire wetland. it is still in flames.

Pantanal is one of the world’s most biologically diverse habitats and ecosystems, home to blue macaw sanctuaries, the largest population of jaguars, and rare amphibious reptiles. specifically the wetland is home to 263 species of fish, 41 species of amphibians, 113 species of reptiles, 463 species of birds, 132 species of mammals (2 of which are exclusive to the region). more important than its ecological importance is the cultural importance as the Pantanal is also home to numerous indigenous quilombola and riverside communities.

less than 5% of the Pantanal are protected by conservation units and the little that is protected is under attack by the agricultural industry and the current presidency. since the start of the fires more than 2 million hectares have already been lost.

Okay. I’m Canadian so I know a shit ton about staying warm if you’re new to the cold there here are some tips!(add more if you know more!)

1. Wear grippy shoes, nothing is worse than snowmelt freezing on your skin.

2.Do not wear jeans as your outter layer. wet denim is the most body heat siphoning mother fucker known to man or god

3. Have a warm drink with you. It will help. Even just some hot soup broth or boiled water will help keep you warm.

4. Wear a moisture wicking layer close to your skin so you don’t get cold from your own sweat. You will sweat. That is fine and expected.

5. If you start feeling too warm even though you were cold and like you have to take your clothes of DO NOT. Call 911. You are suffering from hypothermia.

6. Bring a blanket and a heat source that needs no electricity with you in your vehicle. You do not want to be stranded with no heat in the case that something happens.

7. If you are struggling on ice as you’re walking, stop. Get your balance and penguin shuffle to a less slippery patch of ground. There’s usually less ice on one side of the walk and it’s better to walk in the snow next to the sidewalk than it is to eat dirt when ya slip

8. STAY THE ABSOLUTE FUCK AWAY FROM FROZEN BODIES OF WATER. Ponds are deceptive as shit even with the “solid blue tried and true” thing. Go around.

9. Keep kids warm. They run at a higher body temperature and will feel the effects of the cold worse than you.

10. Huddling is your best friend. Even if you don’t know the person, remember you’re both cold, especially if they don’t have the right clothing for the weather.

11. Pay attention to windchill. That is how cold it feels. Dress appropriately please. I know it’s tempting to dress for style, but there’s nothing stylish about losing your toes to frostbite

12. Don’t touch metal if you can avoid it. It will sap your heat and likely freeze to anything wet. Like tongues. Don’t fucking lick a pole.

13. If someone licks something metal, pour warm water over their tongue to get them free. If they yank, they will bleed. A lot.

14. Keep your ears, noes, fingers, and toes warm. You’re extremities will get cold first and are the most likely parts of your body to get frostbite.

15. If you see someone who may not have a place to be in the cold, offer to help them find a local shelter or library. The elements, especially the cold, are some of the largest threats to those who cannot avoid them.

16. If you find yourself stuck outside for a long time, sleep during the day when it is warmest, and avoid sleeping on the ground. Stay awake as much as you can at night so you have a better chance of staying warm.

Also, look out for your local animals.   Cats will sleep on car wheels where you can’t see them - it’s elevated, rubber is warmer than the ground, and it’s a little hideyhole where they feel safe.  Check your wheel wells and under your car before you go driving off, you might save a tiny life.

You can also, if you’re so inclined, make a little winter shelter for cats and small animals fairly easily and cheaply.

[Here] is an even simpler (ad possibly cheaper) version of basically the same thing.  As long as you smooth out the opening (so the lil guys don’t injure themselves on it), insulate, and line it, and then put it somewhere where it’s not going to get flooded or the animal snowed in, you’re grand. It might not seem like much in the face of subzero temperatures, but it’s damn well better than nothing.

hi just FYI: this is the result of alabama’s felony murder statute. felony murder statutes basically say that if someone is killed while a felony is being committed, those in commission of the felony are liable for the death as a murder. in this case, that means anyone who participated in the original felony of breaking into houses is liable.

you can be charged with first-degree murder in a situation like this. in order for a jury to find someone guilty of first-degree murder there has to be proof, beyond a reasonable doubt, of deliberation and purposeful intent. THE ONLY REQUIREMENT, HOWEVER, WHEN IT IS A FELONY MURDER, IS THE INTENT TO COMMIT A FELONY. that’s it. you could have had 0 desire and 0 reason to believe someone would die but if they do die, you can be charged with the same degree of murder as someone who planned out said murder and, with the intent to kill, carried it out. 

there has been a case where a police officer shot and killed another police officer as they attempted to catch someone who had just robbed a store which led to the person who had robbed the store being charged with murder. almost every time i’ve read a case using a felony murder statute like alabama’s it has been used to protect cops. there are genuinely very few other reasonably conceivable purposes for it. it is used to shift responsibility and absolve cops of responsibility. it’s unjust and complete bullshit.

As our national parks and national forests fall victim to human pressure, more than ever, this is something we’re seeing more and more of. Hopefully we can make this video go viral. This stream, as you can see around us right here, is a breeding ground for North America’s largest salamander, the Eastern hellbender. They can get up to 2.5-3 feet long. It’s part of our natural heritage in the eastern United States. When people do this right here - what they consider to be art - they’re actually destroying the breeding ground for the Eastern hellbender salamander. The Eastern hellbender will use flat rocks such as these to make nesting sites in these streams. So here’s what I would like everybody to do. Not only are they harmful for river/stream habits, they can cause hikers to get lost! Cairns are meant to represent the correct path for a trail. We’ve had hikers get lost by following incorrect paths marked by cairns people set up “for fun/art.” Not only do we want hikers to get lost, we want them to stay on the correct path for erosion control and ecosystem protection. Cairn-building “for fun/art” has gained a lot of popularity in recent years, so we keep finding more and more to knock over.

If you want to set up a cairn “for fun/art,” do it in a dry, very rocky area. Don’t take rocks from rivers or streams! But when it’s a bedrock site and there’s lots of rocks sitting around? Sure, fine, whatever. But please please PLEASE knock them down after! Don’t be the reason we have to deploy Search & Rescue for a lost hiker!

This a thousand times. Also remember to vote down ballot. when the GOP flipped over a dozen state legislatures back in 2010 they created Project REDMAP to control redistricting after the Census. They gerrymandered the fuck out of states and they publicly boasted how they were able to gain/maintain lopsided majorities both on the state and House of Representatives level, DESPITE a majority of voters voting against them. 2020 is another census year and the Trump Administration has explicitly argued for changing the Census to overrepresent nonhispanic whites and Republican voters. If they gain/maintain enough state governments to control post-2020 redistricting then we’re fucked. The Senate, WH, and SCOTUS are already an uneven playing field. This could render the House of Representatives defacto out of reach for democrats as well. So please please vote D in every race like the future of our democracy is at stake – because it is.
