Olimar bends down to help gather up the litter of papers, giving Eric a look of barely-concealed pity. He doesn’t know this coworker very well, but he is familiar with their boss’s temper.
“You could blame me, you know. I’m always out on the road, so he’d have to call me up to yell at me. I just won’t answer. Hah!” He gives an encouraging smile, straightening up and offering his free hand to help Eric rise to his feet as well.
“People are always blaming delays on ‘late deliveries’.” Whether their assignments involve shipping or not. “So I’m used to it by now.”
“My name is Olimar, by the way. You’re… Eric, right? I think I saw you at that ‘Bring Your Children to Work Day’ lunch.” That initiative had ended in disaster and was canceled before the day was through, but still. It was fun while it lasted.
“How are your wife and children?” That seems a safer question than “are you holding up okay? I can’t help but notice you’ve been demoted again since the last time I saw you.”
i need to name olimar’s kids… all we know about them is that they’re a libra and a sagittarius. (yes, we know their star signs and not their names lmfao).
should I name them after that? like uhhh… lily and taris? I’ve avoided this for a reason I’m so bad with naming characters 😭 if yall have recommendations for like a 10 yr old boy and a 4 yr old girl lmk
People often call Olimar a magnet for bad luck; he wishes that weren’t quite so accurate a descriptor.
If he had a hundred pokos for every time he found himself taking a forced vacation on an alien planet, maybe he’d have enough to quit this miserable job.
But it’s not all bad. He has the benefit of experience on his side this time, and each new planet he visits holds its own unique beauty to appreciate while he’s stuck there. With the confidence of a man who knows he’s survived worse than this latest crash, Olimar wanders around his new surroundings, pausing here and there to admire the strange and alien environment in which he’s found himself.
He’s exploring an incredible stone structure that stretches skyward further than the eye can see when the world decides to test his confidence with an unexpected curve ball.
It’s… a woman. A giantess, dozens of times his size. Olimar’s eyes bug out in shock.
Part of him wonders whether he should hide and observe this stranger to determine her temperament before making himself known, but the rest of him is filled with unrestrained excitement. An entirely new lifeform—! One that shares some Hocotatian features, even! He must make contact at once!
Olimar blows on his whistle and waves his arms to catch the woman’s attention, beaming up at her.
Please be friendly!

[ BTLOC-VERSE ]
Buzzing echoed throughout a small garage inside the bustling city of New York. Inside was a blonde-haired man tinkering away at a robot. It appeared to be hand-crafted, with rough edges and scuff marks scattered across its body. But the man, Grant Best, loved it all the same. No matter the flaws, they were perfect in his eyes. Always perfect.
A few other robots were tinkering in the garage as well. Some were welding new parts, some were sharpening tools, and some were just organizing the shelves. But soon enough, Grant had finished his work, and clapped softly to get all of the robots' attention.
"It's time to go to work, everyone. Are you all ready?" He stood from his desk and patted the robot he had been working on with a warm smile. The rest of the robots responded with various forms of confirmation, from small bleeps and bloops to an entire sentence to say they were ready. "Alright, then. Let me suit up, and we'll be on our way!" Grant's steps thudded quietly against the concrete floor while he ran to grab all of his supplies. He put on a full-body suit, a pair of night vision goggles, a chest-plate, elbow pads, knee pads, and some pieces of custom tech.
With that-- they were off. The robots and their creator rushed into the busy night with bright grins and focused eyes. Leaping across rooftops, they made their way across the city with precise motions, never faltering in their strides. But soon, a commotion made Grant stop in his tracks. The sound of metal trashcans toppling over and some sort of... Inhuman screeching caught his attention. "What was that?" He paused, peeking down into a narrow, shaded alleyway. There he saw a short-looking man with a group of strange creatures. They were facing off against a gang of superpowered humans, which had backed them into a corner, leaving the creatures feeling frightened.
He knew exactly what happened here.
The man signaled his robots to go down into the alley and followed them shortly after. Their mechanical limbs tapped against the concrete floor while they shielded the alien lifeforms from the humans, contrasting the loud crash of Grant landing on top of a trash can and nearly slipping. He then carefully positioned himself between the two groups. "Do you mind?" He questioned in an oddly sweet tone. "If I observed correctly, these people want to be left alone. So..." Grant trailed off, gesturing for to the predatory group to leave.
Of course, they didn't take it well, with one of the humans sneering and asking, 'do you really think we're that stupid?' Before trying to jab at one of his robot children. The mechanical lifeform responded by swiftly stealing their weapon and pointing it back at them. "I could ask you the same question," A bubble of lighthearted laughter rose from Grant's throat. The gang's posture then stiffened. Another one of them attempted to attack, but he was much faster than them. A piece of thick metal swooped in front of their knife and hovered there, blocking the hit entirely. "I would never come to a fight unprepared."
... After a while of failed attempts at a fight, they gave up and fled, promising that they'd be back in the process. Grant simply waved goodbye to them. He then turned back around to the creatures and their... Leader(?), extending a friendly hand as he did. "I apologize if you didn't want any help, but... I couldn't just watch. Are you all okay?" His voice softened as he crouched down to the leader's level. "I'm usually known as Koder. You can call me Grant, though. I hope I wasn't stepping on your toes too much." Grant giggled again, shaking his head. "Oh well, what's done is done. Is there anything you need?"
Olimar’s heart sinks at the sight of the robots. It’s taking all of his concentration to fend off one round of attackers without letting any of his Pikmin die or be captured— now that these villains have called in reinforcements, it’s time to accept that this awful fight will end in a loss.
…or… not? The robots appear to be helping, not hurting. What’s going on?
Olimar watches in shock as a superhero he doesn’t recognize swoops down, directs the strange machines, and even gets out a few snappy comments before chasing off the would-be-thieves.
Fines whistles his Pikmin into line behind him, staring wide-eyed at the stranger for a moment before stepping forward and giving his hand a hearty shake.
“The help was much appreciated, I assure you! We’re alright.” He glances back at the creatures grouped behind him; they appear unharmed, and are leaning to either side of their leader to look curiously at Koder and his robots.
“Thank you, Grant. Really.” The thought crosses Olimar’s mind that this man might have chased the others away in order to take the Pikmin for himself, but he tries to ignore that spike of paranoia. Grant is helping him. Grant just saved his life, and the lives of all of these innocent creatures. What has the world come to if Olimar can’t bring himself to trust such a show of kindness?
Grant looks as though he’s about to leave now that his job is done; Fines takes an urgent half-step forward to stop him.
“Please—!” Olimar doesn’t know where to start.
“Those people will come back. I don’t think I can protect these creatures alone.” He’s not sure what he’s asking of this man. Koder can’t stick around playing bodyguard, and it would be presumptuous to ask to be brought to a vigilante’s hidden lair. But Olimar needs to ensure the safety of his friends.
“You’re a hero, aren’t you? Will you help me keep them safe?”

Yes, he supposes a man like Moon Knight would know how to deal with weaponry. The city ought to be thankful that the vigilante is (probably) on the side of peace.
Olimar’s brow furrows. He still feels unsure, and has no real reason to trust the superhero, but there’s something in Moon Knight’s tone that makes him feel almost safe. Maybe everything really will work out in the end.
Courage, Olimar.
Fines gives a shaky nod, and then lets out an even shakier laugh. Moon Knight is offering to get him out of Hocotate Freight? Who is he, Olimar’s guardian angel?
“I don’t understand why you’re being so kind to me. You caught me with weapons! Weapons I was about to hand over to some sort of crime lord, I’m sure. And— not only have you decided not to hurt me, but you want to help me, now, too?”
It’s too good to be true. Olimar should proceed with caution. …still… he can’t help but grace the other man with a small, hopeful smile. Wouldn’t it be amazing to know that he’s doing some good with his work for once?
“What is the Midnight Mission?” Fines asks as he begins to walk, halting when he notices his missing keys. Moon Knight’s insisting on driving; if the vigilante were anyone else, Olimar would balk at the idea of his beloved Dolphin in the hands of another driver. But beggars can’t be choosers, and he’s not about to make demands about who gets the passenger’s seat.
He loads up the crates with practiced efficiency, settling in beside Moon Knight, and drums his fingers nervously against his thigh.
“I really hope you’re not tricking me, Mr. Moon Knight. I think— it would actually be quite nice to— to be able to stop doing this. If you’re being honest with me, I’ll owe you a debt that can never be repaid.”
Moon Knight only decided to start answering his questions once they were both inside the truck. He adjusted the seat to fit his height and buckled up, as well as starting the car, then turned his head towards Olimar after he adjusted the mirrors. "Consider this an act of charity." The white-dressed vigilante started simply. "I don't punish people who make honest mistakes. I only hurt those who deliberately choose to inflict harm on innocent travelers." He finally communicated, although his tone was starting to develop a sharp edge again.
"As for your other question... The Midnight Mission is my office. The area around it is protected by me and my allies. Anyone who lives there is considered a part of the Mission, and they're able to request my help at any time." Moon Knight continued on as he began to drive out of the warehouse and into the street. "I have no reason to trick you, either. I'm just doing what I believe is right; and that would be helping you out of your unfortunate situation. There's nothing else to it."
The truck cruised down into part of Manhattan, where most of the doors appeared to have a white crescent moon symbol painted on them. "... You also don't owe me anything. Like I said, this is a decision of charity, not an exchange." He then parked in front of a building with a large glass window in the front, as well as a glass door, both bearing the same symbol. "Welcome to the Midnight Mission." Moon knight turned off the engine and stepped out of the vehicle. "Load the crates inside here, and I'll get to work." He pointed to the building he had parked near, then waved to a figure who seemed to be watching from inside.
She had dark skin and thick coils, as well as red eyes that glowed in the midnight light. "That's Reese. She can help you get everything inside if you need it." He glanced at Olimar with a strangely soft look in his eyes. "Don't rush yourself, if you can. I know this is a lot to take in at once." Moon Knight advised, and then handed the keys back to his new ally.
Please be careful with his truck! The Dolphin is a little rough around the edges, but he’s poured years of love (and a fair bit of money) into the old thing.
An act of charity. Maybe Olimar should feel offended, but he doesn’t; it’s better to be seen as a pathetic ally than a dangerous enemy. Part of him doesn’t feel as though he deserves this kindness, however. While it’s true he didn’t know what he was transporting, he can’t be considered truly blameless. A better man would have refused to take on illegal deliveries in the first place. …then again, that better man must not have a wife and children to feed if he can afford to turn down good money in favor of some moral high ground.
“So you and your friends serve as protection for the neighborhood.” But unlike the local gangs that charge exorbitant prices for the promise of safety, Moon Knight runs his Mission as a charity.
Olimar often wonders what drives New York’s superheroes to put their lives on the line for people like him. A sense of duty? Selflessness beyond the realm of natural self-preservation? Whatever Moon Knight’s reason for doing all of this, Fines feels a deep sense of respect for his new hero. The world needs more people like this— people who will face the ugly truths of the world in order to solve them.
He hurries to complete his new task, slowing down only when Moon Knight gives him verbal permission to take his time. That’s quite considerate of the vigilante to notice and address the pressured way in which Olimar works to prove that he can be helpful and that his benefactor is making the right choice.
“Oh— yes. Alright.” Slow and steady. He stares into the new figure’s red eyes for a beat too long before ducking his head and waving to Reese.
“That’s okay, I’ve got it.” Who is she? Another one of Moon Knight’s “charity cases”?
“If I did end up here, what would I be doing for the Mission? More cargo work?”
Is he capable of anything more meaningful?
happy 20th (!!!! woah!) bday to my favourite-est little guys ever ..... love this game series so much its unreal ❤
Olimar takes a step back as the stranger— Moon Knight— moves closer. This is not good. This is very, very not good.
“Lethal weapons?” he sounds genuinely shocked. He had hoped thought that he was delivering stolen valuables— a crime, yes, but not a violent one. To think that he might be supplying remorseless criminals with the means to kill! Does Sacho know what he’s been asking his subordinate to do? The man is money-hungry, but surely even he wouldn’t stoop so low as to endanger others for a quick buck! …right?
Olimar’s head is reeling. The roaring in his ears only worsens when Moon Knight reveals that he knows his name.
He knows everything about Olimar.
Fines pales, suddenly nauseous and weak-kneed.
“I— I don’t—“
Words fail him as the other man presses on. Fines considers himself a rather level-headed man, but right now, his only thought is “run, Olimar!”
“You’ll let me go?” he echoes, finally processing Moon Knight’s words. Thank heavens! He’s dodged a bullet here— perhaps literally. From what he knows, each of these vigilantes has their own code when it comes to how they handle criminals. Moon Knight could have done anything from arresting Fines to breaking every bone in his body. …but instead, he’s offering to let the freighter go. It’s almost suspiciously kind.
As Olimar’s racing heart begins to slow, he begins to feel slightly more clear-headed, and the full ramifications of this situation wash over him like ice water. If he loses this shipment, there’s no telling what will happen to him at work. And even if he does give up his cargo, what guarantee does he have that Moon Knight will keep his word? Maybe Olimar should try to escape back to his truck crates in hand.
But… no. No. He can’t. If he’s truly been transporting weapons, then this needs to end now. Olimar can’t be responsible for someone else’s murder, indirectly or not.
He tries to respond, but his voice catches in his throat. Swallowing down his fear, Fines balls his hands into fists and looks pleadingly up at the other man.
“I’d like to destroy them. But I don’t know how to do it.”
Will you help him finally do the right thing?
His eyes stared down at Olimar while the poor man began to tremble, as if freezing, his mouth agape with shock and his joints locking with fearful paralysis. A pan of warmth struck Moon Knight's chest. He clearly had no idea... What an unfortunate soul. While it could be an act, or a ruse of some kind, he severely doubted that possibility given the other's history. He was nothing if not kind-hearted. So, he made his decision. The pointy gears of his mind turned, spinning away while he constructed a plan, and then...
"That's fine. I know how to dispose of the weapons properly." Moon Knight responded smoothly. His razor-edged gaze seemed to relax, and the atmosphere warmed with the fuzzy sensation of care. Genuine care, at that. A rare sight to behold from someone such as himself. "Load the crates back onto your vehicle. I'll drive." He then bent down to be at eye-level with Olimar, an invisible attempt at a smile underneath his mask. "You won't get in trouble for this, by the way. Not if you're with me. Most shady circles know who I am, but if they don't... They will. So don't worry."
He then stood back up to his full height, stretching briefly, before he began to walk out of the warehouse. "If you need an out, I'm able to provide that as well. The Midnight Mission could always use some extra hands." Moon Knight mentioned to him. Somehow, he seemed to already have the truck's keys in his hand. Maybe he snatched them when he was crouched to be at Fines' level. "Now, hurry up before your company's client gets here. I'm not in the mood for unnecessary bloodshed tonight."
... Not that the villain wouldn't get what was coming for her eventually. But that was a problem for later. He was more focused on keeping Olimar safe, now that they had a deal officially arranged. After all, he left his more ruthless side behind when he abandoned Khonshu. He wasn't going to make the same mistakes again. Especially not after the promises he made...
Yes, he supposes a man like Moon Knight would know how to deal with weaponry. The city ought to be thankful that the vigilante is (probably) on the side of peace.

The first month after Pecha’s death had been hell. Olimar had always believed in his heart that he would be the first of them to go. How could he not be? He’s the one constantly going off on dangerous jobs. He’s the one who almost met his end multiple times already. He’s the one who deserves to be cold and lifeless, scattered amongst the stars.
How could she have left him like this? How could she have left their children?
Olimar had told his kids that their mother was still with them in the warmth of the sunlight on their faces and in the twinkle of chimes on the porch; it took him seven weeks to realize that his words were a little more literal than intended.
“It’s not that I want her gone,” he explains to Vivi. “Quite the opposite! If her spirit could remain with us… that— that would be a miracle. It’s simply that she, um. Hasn’t taken to being dead very well.”
What a thing to say!
“She’s frightening the children. They keep thinking they see her in the kitchen, or in our bedroom, and I just don’t know what to say to them. I feel half-crazed even speaking to you now.”
Olimar cradles the set of wedding rings in his hands, looking down at their dull golden shine.
“I know how this sounds. People lose their minds with grief all the time, don’t they. But surely you of all people will understand. Pecha— my darling, beautiful Pecha! She won’t stop haunting me!”

Someone was meddling in Selina'a natural habitat and she wasn't going to have it! While the thief usually indulged herself in jewels and cat-themed paraphernalia, she often intercepted military and police deliveries, allowing her to get her claws on some new equipment she could begin to use. This proved especially useful if she ever lost or broke something and needed a quick replacement, or at least the spare parts to repair it herself. The poor drivers and staff had had plenty of run-ins with the princess of plunder, stepping back as far as they could to avoid the deadly crack of her whip. They let her prance in and out, taking whatever she wanted without a scratch.
Now, some "new management" excuse wasn't going to drive her away when she was sorely running low on supplies. The Catwoman had even promised she wasn't going to steal this time around, instead, just take a look at the fresh stock and make her decision later. Still, the employees didn't budge, and while she usually held herself back from forcing her way through an otherwise civil agreement, she had to know who was pulling the strings above and who had the audacity to snitch on her.
Her reign of terror had begun slowly, of course. A couple of slashed tires here, stolen keys there, and finally, some hostages under her watchful eye until she could find out who had pulled the plug on her schemes. She'd been expecting Sionis and company, a common pest to her work. But, the unlucky sap hadn't been kidding when he mentioned a name that Selina hadn't recognized.
She figured it wouldn't hurt to pay him a visit.
Such circumstances had brought the Catwoman up to his Gotham City residence, stretching her legs out as she laid atop Olimar's windowsill.
"Sooo, who do you think you are?" Her question pierced the air, arms folded over her chest as she stared at the man with a scowl over her lips, "You don't seem like an off-the-books kinda guy, so why do you have to take the fun away from everyone else?"
Olimar flinches and looks hesitantly towards the window. It’s quite the shock to have a visitor at this hour; he had stayed up late writing reports, and now the light of his tablet screen casts a soft glow over a figure making herself at home on his windowsill.
Ah. The (cat) woman of the hour.
Inhaling slowly, Olimar turns off his device and stands, mirroring her pose. He’s frightened, but holds his ground. The freighter knew she would track him down eventually, and he made all the preparations necessary for their inevitable face-off; his wife and children have been staying with his sister-in-law ever since he decided to move against the infamous rogue. There’s no one here for Catwoman to threaten but Olimar himself.
“I’m sorry to impede your… business… but the ‘arrangement’ you had with everyone wasn’t sustainable. We’re just trying to complete our assignments and go home. You need to let everyone go and leave us alone.”
His expression softens and he looks at her pleadingly. In a way, he’s glad she decided to stop by; he knows how much danger he’s in with her being here in person, but he’s been waiting for this opportunity to talk things through and see if they can’t come to an understanding that will keep everyone safe.
“Try to see things from my point of view. I mean, don’t you have anyone waiting for you at home?”
OLIMAR: today i discovered a new species. i've named it the Smimbletoothed Frondler, for the leafy appendages it uses to snatch up pikmin. it's scary, but I can't help but be fascinated by this planet's strange ecology
OLIMAR'S BOSS: the yakuza are comibg to break my kneecaps
This is hardly the first time that Olimar has been tasked with making a “special” delivery. These assignments come in every so often (especially when the company is running short on cash), and they’re always given directly to Olimar. Maybe he should be grateful for the extra work, but his nerves always seem to get the better of him when he’s out on one of these jobs; it feels as though there’s a new “superhero” prowling the city streets every other month these days, and it’s only a matter of time before one of them catches up to him.
He should have quit a long time ago.
Oh, well. This is his last delivery of the evening, and then he can go home. He smiles softly at the thought. Quickly, now, Olimar! If he hurries, he might make it back in time to kiss Pecha goodnight before she turns off her late night shows and settles down to sleep.
Humming softly to himself, he unloads two heavy crates from the back of his truck and wheels them over to the drop-off point.
…that’s strange. He was told he would be meeting a woman in dark clothing, but the figure waiting up ahead is quite the opposite. The stranger’s stark white ensemble gleams under the light of the moon; something about its uncanny glow makes Olimar’s stomach twist up in knots.
“I don’t suppose you’d happen to be ‘Ms. Labre’…?”
@shatteringthetomb !
The full moon's dazzling light shined down upon the city with its silver rays. It illuminated the dark edges of the alleyways and abandoned houses, making his attire more obvious than normal. He was almost glowing, but he liked it that way. After all-- if no one saw him coming, what was the point? His very presence struck fear into the hearts of those who knew him. If he were invisible, that reaction would never come.
Marc, or rather-- Moon Knight-- waited patiently in the old warehouse. Its wooden exterior was rotting and smelled of thick mold, along with the cobwebs coating nearly every surface, but he paid those details no mind. He remained on his perch, a small table, with his crescent-shaped cape pooling out around him. All he needed to do was wait for the right moment.
There they were-- the culprit of the crime. They appeared to be a short man with a big, round nose and soft eyes. Definitely not the criminal type, if he was being honest, but that didn't change the facts. This man was delivering illegal weaponry right into the hands of a villain. That needed to be stopped.
He stood from his spot on the table and hopped down onto the floor. The air seemed to grow colder, as if the temperature had abruptly dropped a few degrees. Moon Knight towered above the tiny stranger. His presence loomed there for a few moments, and then he spoke, his words sharp and calculated like a knife's edge.
"No, I'm not who you're looking for. I'm someone much worse." He began, his luminous eyes narrowing at the small man before him. "You can call me Moon Knight." The vigilante introduced with a frigid weight to his words. "I enact vengeance against those who dare harm the travelers of the night. And you are delivering lethal weapons into the hands of a dangerous individual."
"I did a background check on you, Olimar. You don't have a hint of criminal records on you, but the company you work for does. If it ever goes under, you'll be the one to blame for this." He took a step closer, his body stiff yet eerily commanding. "Is that really how you want to live your life? As a scapegoat? A pawn?" Moon Knight interrogated him fiercely. His tone was becoming more grim by the second. "I doubt it. So I'm giving you a chance to make this right."
"Destroy those weapons and I'll let you go."
Olimar takes a step back as the stranger— Moon Knight— moves closer. This is not good. This is very, very not good.
