Back from the dead to be back on my bullshit. I watched the leaked Avatar Aang movie. Here's my review+reaction. Above cut—no spoilers, read in peace. Spoilers at end.
This wasn't supposed to come out until October 2026. It was leaked a few days ago (April) and appeared on the usual sites. It was emailed in mistake to some guy with a twitter and he did as expected of a twitter user. To be fair: mega-corp canceled the theater release because they hate money and hate ATLA fans, and wanted to enshittify things and make us all get a paramount+ subscription (fuck subscriptions.) So I really don’t feel bad for them. I would have gone to the movie theater for this and I haven't stepped foot in a movie theater in 10 years. They fucked us over.
Anyway, review:
Animation: 8/10. The look is much more anime than the original and the character designs are similar to the comics. The animation quality is fantastic for TV quality, but sub-standard for movie quality. Overall the production is visually lower than Korra. The character designs are gorgeous (similar to the comics designs) and the animation is well balanced between detail and fluidity, but, again, compared to anime movie quality (KnY Mugen Train, for example) it’s sub-standard. There are some animation issues with the lip synching and some spots where the animation was lack-luster for what should have been a visually impressive scene. However, the average animation quality is consistently good. There’s never any moment where it actually looks bad. Some of the animation (such as bending scenes) look like they were traced over exactly from ATLA/Korra. Overall it looks pretty damn good.
Voice acting: 4/10. They replaced the beloved original VAs even in cases the original could have performed. Disappointing. The new VAs are mid and the nostalgia factor is dead. This was a poor choice. The dialogue sounds awkward, made worse by the poor performance. The bad acting gets in the way of the impact of scenes.
Story: 6/10. It bridges the gap between ATLA and Korra, so that is appreciated. But there isn't anything new or particularly well done here. It serves as a viable back-bone for a movie and isn’t particularly bad in any way. It’s formulaic and feels lazy with a lot of same-ness.
Sound design: 6/10. Again, there’s nothing that stands out as bad, and on average it’s a positive experience, but there’s nothing incredible either.
Eye candy: 10/10. The female gaze was taken into account. You will eat well tonight. Zuko is hot. Very hot. The new character Tagah is also habanero. Everyone is beefy. The girls are hot, the guys are hot, it’s a bisexual’s paradise. The characters are all early-mid 20s (I think?) and went from “I want my daddy” to “I am daddy.”
Watchability: 10/10. This is crack cocaine. It’s got the ATLA mix of action, fantasy, and comedy. It doesn’t have any particularly awkward dynamics like Korra did, and there’s nothing brake-stomping bad at any point to take you out of the show.
Overall: 7.5/10. Every choice was inoffensively bland. There’s nothing that you can point a finger at and call bad, but there’s nothing mind-blowingly good, either. It’s much appreciated to have new content after all this time, and it’s enjoyable enough. But it doesn’t feel like there was heart and passion put into this, not the way we saw in ATLA or even the traces left in Korra. I really miss Dante Basco and the other original VAs. There’s notes of VLD and Korra, Mir definitely left a fingerprint on the production. It looks good, it’s fun, the action scenes are hype, but it’s not a masterpiece and had no ambition.
Spoilers below cut
Cold open is workable. Hmm… a violent group of non-benders. Where have I heard this story before? Oh, right, right, the Equalists.
Obviously the writing had to go with Kataang because of pre-established canon, but honestly I see Tagah/Aang becoming a thing as they had great chemistry (if you like age-gap yaoi, which we do). The meeting scene has Tagah fall into Aang’s arms the same way Aang fell into Katara’s. So by storytelling conventions, this means Tagah/Aang is canon. It’s endorsed, guys! Go ship!
The Mount Baiha scene gives solid Breath of the Wild vibes. A minute later it Tears of the Kingdoms. That’s an air temple destroyed (there were only supposed to be 4 total major air temples) and now a mountain is destroyed and doing the cinemagraphic falling-platforms thing from anime. Ngl it’s hype. However, this is straining credulity. If everything is a car chase scene, nothing is.
The fight choreography isn’t as good as ATLA but it’s GOOD.
Zuko’s characterization is perfect. Our boy is on the spectrum! And/or gay. Toph feels very modern. Sokka is Sokka. Katara’s personality is already reducing down to corn flakes.
At the scene where Tagah is waking up, it’s almost 1:1 to Aang waking up from the ice, down to the same camera angles and expressions. It feels lazy, like a rehash of the original instead of a new thing. And then at that point the story changes to the scene from FMA where Scar wakes up for the first time in the medical tent. And, again, the story is a rehash: Tagah tries to kill Toph because she’s an Earthbender and their nations were at war… where have I heard this, again? Oh, yeah, it’s the same story from ATLA, and then the Fire Earth Nation attacked.
Sokka’s reveal of the Last Airbender story was cringy and unbelievable. It’s not even silly Sokka in a good way, it felt forced. Also I’m feeling so bad for this dude but he seriously looks 1:1 with Scar from FMA and the words DILF DILF DILF DILF DILF are flashing strobe lights through my head. I don’t care if he’s the villain, DADDY.
Again giving Tears of the Kingdom in the lost island/new world bit. I like this plotline more.
“The bond between us, can you feel it?” TAGAH/AANG CONFIRMED BABY. AO3 do your thing.
The air flying scene between Tagah/Aang is downright romantic. They even do the Eureka 7 hand-grab while falling through the air bit. Guys. Guys, this ship is looking pretty beefy. Got some sails up there on the mast. (Go watch Eureka Seven right now if you haven’t seen it before. Don’t sleep, just watch.)
Sonam pushing Tagah into the ice sphere to save his life is just the scene from RWBY where Pyrrha pushes John into the crate to save him. Another ship. Tagah pulls Avatar hole. Aang will bottom, of course, as per yaoi rules that the muscular guy must top and the twink will bottom.
Tagah to Aang: “You remind me so much of Sonam” he says while gazing at Aang lovingly, after just hinting that he and Sonam were probably lovers. I’m not even memeing anymore, I think this is a ship. They’re hitting every romantic trope.
The airship scene gives Last Exile or Porco Rosso finishing in an Atlantis. There’s Mir/VLD vibes to this and the next airship scenes. This is enjoyable, but feels like I’ve watched it before.
Tagah to Aang: “Aang, trust me.” This is hitting more romance tropes than a fanfic. What the fuck do we name the ship, Aaah? Tagaang? Aaah!
Katara and Zuko immediately run off to have a scene together. “Katara, come with me!” Zutara girlies? We’re back. I’m Zutara/Aaah! double-shipping. While Aaah! are having a dual-action-star scene, Zutara are having their own and saving the entire ship. Katara does an entire Moses.
Sokka is Sokka!
Aang once again lashes out at Katara like an immature brat. This is painful. Thankfully we have Aaah! Now.
The Lion-turtles becoming islands is just like The Owl House. Before you piss yourself screech “no but the Indiginous American legends!”, wait. In the next cut the “Lion-turtles” have suspiciously TOH-like fangs (sabertooth tiger-ish) with visible skulls forming the islands.
Katara has seen the way Tagah’s been looking at Aang’s ass and isn’t having none of that. Sorry baby but we ship it. Get the divorce.
“I assure you, everything I do, I do for Aang.” ?!?!?!!?!?!!?!?!? THAT IS NOT A PLATONIC THING TO SAY. AAAH!
You know, Tagah is just Zaheer in different clothes. Except he’s in love with Aang. I’m shipping Zahaang. Aaeer. AAAAAAEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
Katara’s face when Zuko dies is shipfuel.
Katara yelling “He trusted you!” at Zah—I mean, at Tagah—while beating the crap out of him in the magic islands is just Katara yelling “We trusted you!” at Zuko while beating the crap out of him in the Crystal Catacombs.
Tagah and Aang both grab the staff, and Tagah says, “We can do this—me and you.” THAT IS NOT A HETEROSEXUAL THING TO SAY.
Guys I can’t believe Zuko is dead.
“You’re a traitor to your own, just like Sonam.” So he beat up his gf the same way he’s now beating up his boyfriend.
Oh shit, Zuko actually is dead. Fuck I was joking earlier. He’s dead, guys. They killed our boi.
I’m enjoying this. It’s cheese but it’s my cheese.
Sonam is hot.
I called Tagah basically Scar and Zaheer, but he’s also basically Zarkon (VLD). He’s still really hot.
The story gets better. It’s very same-y feeling but I’m liking it. Tagah has a thing with tragic lovers-to-enemies with Avatars. Aaah! is a canon ship.
Katara is a necromancer now. I’m not even making this one up. Necromancy is on the table. Zutara girlies, where are we at?
Aapa cheated on Aang. With Tagah. They made the k-pop yaoi love triangle. Guys, I’m shipping Aaah!
!!!!!!!!!!!!! Oh it’s the scene from VLD with Coran aging in reverse. I will allow it because this is great.
ELDERLY ZUTARA CONFIRMED.
Momo is a… sperm.
“And an...elderly couple.” “We are NOT a couple!” Guys, it’s the scene from ATLA. The writers of this absolutely ship Zutara. Wink wink fucking nudge nudge, it’s Zutara/Aaah! Time. Zutaraaaah.
Pige! Pigggggggggeeeeeeeeeee
Katara is hot.
Everyone is hot.
Tagah is literally Zaheer. Even the facial expressions are the same.
Tagah’s got a point, man. Basically if you like Attack on Titan you’ll like this movie. I won’t elaborate.
CABBAGES
Katara is still hot. Now we got a hot yuri catfight… Wait. Wait. I ship this. I ship Katara with Denied Girl. (...wtf is her name?) This is just Catradora. I ship it. Katara has two hands, she can be bisexual.
Zuko is still hot.
Toph does the Edward Elric arm-sword thing. I’ll allow it.
Objectively the story is mid but I’m having fun.
SHIRTLESS LONG HAIR ZUKO. He looks like a k-historical lead, or those danshi (wtf are they called?) shows. He could be in shampoo commercials.
“Oh, right, we were supposed to be stopping that temple from falling on the city, not getting into ideological arguments during long drawn-out fight scenes with perfect foil pairings with the opps. ...Shit. Damn bro that really sucks that all those giant ancient stone columns and tiers of temple grounds are falling on all your shit. My bad, warui, suiiimaseeeeen.”
Katara/Denied girl yuri smile (CATRADORA) immediately pans out to the Aaah! yaoi collapsing-during-fighting-and-giving-a-heartfelt-plea scene. Yuri shippers shaking hands with yaoi shippers.
It’s the Unalaak scene but Tagah transforms LITERALLY INTO ZARKON. He’s a giant purple furry I’m dying I’m fukcing dxlying what the fffffffffffff oh my god
DARK SPIRIT AVATAR WE’RE KORRA SEASON 2
Aaah!
HE’S NOT ONLY ZARKON, HE’S GANON. Is it the facial hair? The buffness? The twink he’s fighting with? Come get your dinner.
Aw. The flashback scene was cute.
The wrist grab??!!?! And they finish the line at the same time?!?!?!!? !!!!!!!!!!!! Aaah!
Ending scene: very pretty. They put the entire budget between here and the opening.
You know, I like it. It’s not good but I like it a lot. After all this time we finally get new content. It’s better than Natla. Overall, it was enjoyable.
I wish it had a longer run time because it felt rushed. Tagah goes from mellow to supervillain faster than I eat cake. This needed to brew longer, not enough of the potential flavor got a chance to develop. I’d say the biggest issues are the crap VAs, missed potential, rushed pace, and lack of nuance or novelty. It’s a paint by numbers avatar story with similar writing quality to the comics. Katara, Zuko, Toph, and Sokka felt like unimportant side characters and seriously did not get enough screentime. Iroh wasn’t mentioned at all. It doesn’t feel grounded in the ATLA world either, we saw a bit of republic city, a bit of one air temple, and the rest took place in the sky above the sea or in this new Lionturtle Archipelago. It’s kind of like a drawing on a blank background.
But I’m happy it was made and I enjoyed watching it.
Anyway sorry if horny I'm on substances and they put a beef pie in front of me and a thick slice of cheesecake. Now go write smut so I can read it.
hello teenager. in front of you is a 2 ton chevy trailerblazer. you can either start driving, putting yourself and those around you in immediate danger, along with causing you great anxiety, or you can spend your life aaking your friends and family to chauffeur you around town because you cant go butt fuck no where without a car. if you choose to drive, you will have to spend your life paying mandatory microtransactions for a mode of transport you hate. if you dont, you will have to ride the almost nonexistent public transport system and/or put yourself in grave danger by riding a bicycle down a 45 mph stroad. if you complain to anyone in your life about learning to drive a car, you get acid poured onto you. good luck.
Some women will never want children in their life in any meaningful capacity. They don't want to give birth. They don't want to adopt. They don't want to be the fun auntie. They don't want to be a godmother. They don't want to work in a field with children. They will never change a child's diaper and don't believe their lack of childcare skills is a problem that needs fixing, because childcare is not a crucial part of the human experience, with billions of people on the planet. They go about their day while only seeing kids out at the grocery store or at the park, and nothing is missing from their lives.
The refusal to accept this is driving a global right-wing backlash movement.
If I left a ❤️ on some fanart and then got people DMing me like, "omg did you know that fanart you liked was drawn by someone who once drew this problematic thing 5 months ago?!" I would lose my mind. That is the jobless behavior I deleted reddit over.
When I was a kid we bullied the hallway monitors. Now the hall monitors want to do the bullying.
