Not sure why it worked, maybe it was just the tone of his voice. Maybe it was literally and figuratively getting down onto the same level. Maybe Dylan felt connected to David through his own trouble in the same way David did to Dylan ('No training, no, just trouble’). Maybe this is how you talk to someone who has just told you about his dead brother – you call in favours like a friend or family member might.
'Actively’ is such a big word for a man who is stalled. Especially when it’s hitting off against the possibility of depression.
