Magvel Worldbuilding
You know, people get mad about how Fates didnât get much worldbuilding, but in some ways Magvel and Elibe didnât necessarily get that much better, though they did get continent names soâŚ
Anyway, Iâm here to rectify that. Again itâs my personal headcanons and if you want to disagree or put in your own input feel free,
Renais
- Probably the nation that most resembles the typical medieval image of Fire Emblem. - Their army is made up of a lot of calvary, though foot soldiers are not an uncommon sight. - Highest export is horses. Other nations do breed horses for their use, but they are generally considered to be inferior to Renaisian ones.
Frelia
- Due to a loophole a past ruler noticed, while royalty can only marry other nobility or royalty, it isnât exactly looked down upon to have a mistress if unmarried and their children are considered legitimate heirs to the throne. This however does not apply if said royal is already married. (Blame Innes and Vanessaâs japanese ending for this one.) - Â Itâs army is mostly made up of Pegasus knights, and it is the only place where wild pegasi are found. - They also ironically have a very skilled battalion of archers.
Grado
- They are regularly visited by earthquakes. Usually they are barely felt if at all, but the earthquake that came in the epilogue did have historical precedent, if a few generations back.
Carcino
- Â A very wealthy country due to its trade with the other nations. - However, as a result, it is pretty classist, and a few families hold the bulk of the wealth, though it is possible to advance further and make a great living.
Jehanna
- Â Ironically, the vast majority of the population has little magical talent. The hero that founded Jehanna was actually one of the few that did in her time, and wielded both of their sacred twins. - The desert is actually their greatest defense, as it is easy to defend the few sure routes through it. It really would take inside help to successfully invade. - There is some farmland by the rivers, but not much. They have to import much of their food from other nations, which makes things more expensive there than in other countries. - Thereâs not any traditional nobility there. Instead, mercenary guilds sort of take the place of them, though their positions can fluctuate depending on many different factors and itâs actually possible for anyone to rise up in the ranks. - Thereâs nowhere near the amount of plots against the throne that outsiders assume. The actual reason why their royalty doesnât interact with the others as much is really because it takes some time to travel to the other countries and they donât usually find that many reasons to take the journey.
Rausten
- Â Due to their proximity to Darkling Woods, they take advantage of their high amount of magical talent and have many learn at least the basics of light magic. - Their highest export is actually lumber due to the high amount of wooded area. As a side effect of this, fire magic is highly regulated and if it is found out that you have been using it without permission near heavily wooded areas, you will be charged. - As a side effect of the high number of magic users, it is where most of the new spells come from. - LâArachel introduces gambling halls to the nation and after a few delays spreads them across the nations. On a completely unrelated topic, Joshua is never once seen in Rausten after the war ends.
You can probably tell which countries Iâve thought the most about canât you. I may add onto this at some point, but feel free to comment ^^
Renais:
I watched a couple minutes of the documentary Guns, Germs, and Steel some weeks back, and it discussed how the Spanish (during the 1500s-1600s) had a special horseback-riding technique called jineta that emphasized speed, balance, and maneuverability. Not only that, the Spanish had some really good weapons, and among them was the rapier. I can totally see Renais being an alternate-universe Spain now.
I totally headcanon that Renaisâ founder wasnât actually one of the Five Heroes. Someone mentioned on the FE subreddit that thereâs a Japanese belief that star-crossed lovers are reborn into twins. So thereâs a guy and a girl who are living the classic star-crossed lovers scenario when Fomortiis started wrecking the continent. They were able to find each other and each came to wield one of the Sacred Weapons. But in their final battle, the two of them die fighting Fomortiis because of death flags and all. So then the guyâs brother (or someone that was close to them) made himself their representative and went on to found Renais in their stead, and had their Sacred Weapons enchanted so that only their reincarnations (Eirika and Ephraim) could wield them.
Frelia:
Carcinoâs split from Frelia started off really messy before things got settled down and it was resolved peacefully. But because of that, Frelia is the most wary of other countriesâ military movement and have the best spy network in Magvel. (Innes, who was taught more of Freliaâs military/political history, is always suspicious of other countries because of that. Tana, who wasnât taught those things, is much more trusting of political alliances and friendship.)
Frelia has really strong archers because a) thereâs a good number of Carcinan mercenaries who are also pegasus riders, and b) Frelia never had strong ties with Grado and theyâre acutely aware that they donât have an air advantage over Grado because of their wyvern riders. So in case they ever come under attack by either country with fliers, theyâre well prepared. (It paid off, as we see, since theyâre able to hold off the Grado army when it was presumably closer to its full strength. Rausten survived as well, but by the time Riev attacked, it was only the remnants of their army.)
Grado:
Iâve posted this before, but Iâll say it again. The country that came to become Grado after Fomortiisâ first defeat had a prominent clan of dark mages, which Grado (the person) was born into. Fomortiis is the direct result of their research and craving for knowledge (which also produced the likes of Duesselâs cursed lance; these guys had no idea how to stop), so Grado felt the responsibility of sealing it away. Lyon, Knoll, and maybe even Novala are descendants of what remained of Gradoâs clan; those who are closer to the bloodline have that lavender-purple hair.
Under Gradoâs plan, many relics of the world before Fomortiis were destroyed or sealed away because all of the countries before then were screwed up in their own way. As a result, thereâs little insight to the world before then and even their calendar begins with Fomortiis (or his defeat, one or the other).
Carcino (and Caer Pelyn):
The âforeign invadersâ that Nada Kuya fought off in Caer Pelyn legend were from Carcino (or back then, it was probably part of Frelia). Her sword, which was a gift from the dragonkin (probably Morva or Myrrhâs late parents), was like a Light Brand and a Wind Sword in one. At the time of the main story, itâs in Daraâs (Salehâs grandmotherâs) possession because it is traditionally given to women in Caer Pelyn. As a result, she doesnât lend it to the party, but in the ending where Eirika marries Saleh and has a daughter, their daughter comes to possess that sword. Myrrh visits them often and is one of the few people who is allowed to touch the sword.
Jehanna:
I canât help but imagine its founder as a woman who was a good ten years or so older than most of the other Five Heroes (who I imagine are generally in their late teens or early twenties) and basically becomes the tough-love mom of the group. She originally was apathetic about the situation (she believed that humanity deserved it) until she lost her husband and children to bandits, who were taking advantage of Fomortiisâ destruction. Then it got personal. She took despondent survivors and turned them into a small army, restoring order bit-by-bit by hunting down bandits and evil-doers (including members of Gradoâs dark magic clan, who she knew were the cause of it all).
Because of that, the ruler of Jehanna is also the head of the mercenary guilds. Also, the lingering traces of bad blood between Jehannaâs founder and Grado are the reason why the two countries donât have strong ties to this day.
Rausten:
Because of the steep mountains surrounding Rausten, they are largely cut off from other countries. They serve as the first line of defense against monsters in Darkling Woods, and are so good at it that most of the other countries believe that they were only legend and didnât actually exist.
My complete headcanon (that I literally made up just now) is that Latona was originally a human experiment by Gradoâs clan with the purpose of un-screwing up whatever they might do. The plan kinda worked, although in unexpected ways: Grado freed Latona in his quest to save the world, but Latona was so thoroughly traumatized that s/he didnât even have the will to live, let alone a will or desire of their own. So when Fomortiis attempted to possess Latona, Latonaâs first desire was to resist Fomortiisâ corruption. Because it was Latonaâs first desire, it was so strong that it could break Fomortiisâ otherwise-unbreakable fetters. (Also notable is that LâArachel only recounts Latonaâs story to Eirika, and even thatâs only after Eirika pleads for some glimmer of hope.)
Eirikaâs Alias: English vs. Japanese
If you have Eirika visit the Renais village Selena is residing in at the beginning of Chapter 2, Eirika will hastily come up with a cover name for herself and pose as a mercenary. This alias later comes up briefly in Chapter 9A, where she adopts the name again for all of maybe 15 minutes before her cover is blown.
Amusingly, Eirikaâs cover name is probably better in English than it is in Japanese, and Seth is somehow better at hiding her identity in English than in Japanese. He still lets her identity slip out regardless. Subtlety is not this manâs strong suit.
English (Chapter 9A):
Seth: Itâs a trade center. Peoples of all nations pass through here. Do not become so enthralled with the sights and sounds that you forget your mission. Eirika: I wonât. Iâm a mercenary by the name of Erina. Iâm traveling to Rausten to receive a commission. Seth: Let us look for a ship then, Erina. The docks are this way.
Japanese:
Seth: ăăăŻč˛żćăŽć çšăäťĺ˝ăŽč ăăĄăĺ¤ăčĄă交ăŁăŚăăžăăă¨ă¤ăŞăźăŻć§ăŽă躍ĺăć°ĺăăăŹăăăŠăăăç¨ĺżăă(Itâs a trade center. Many people of all nations come and go. Eirik-sama, be careful not to make anyone suspect your true status.) Eirik: ăŻăăăăăŁăŚăăžăăç§ăŻĺĺ ľĺŁăŽä¸ĺĄĺĺăŻă¨ă¤ăŞăšăăăšăăłă¸ăŻĺĺ ľăŽäžé źăĺăăăăăŤĺăăăžăă(Right, I understand. I am a member of a mercenary group going by the name Eiris. Iâm headed to Rausten to take up a mercenary job.) Seth: ă§ăŻčšăć˘ăăžăăăăčšçĺ ´ăŻăăĄăăŽăăă§ăă (Letâs look for a ship. The pier is over there.)
My use of âEirikâ was deliberate; thatâs how her name is officially spelled (and pronounced) in the JP version. Thus, as you can see, Eirikaâs JP alias is paper-thin. Itâs literally one letter off her real name!
On top of that, apparently Seth and Eirika didnât even cover what Eirikaâs alias will be before they entered Port Kiris. Iâm guessing Seth is a common enough name that they didnât feel the need to create an alias for one of Renaisâ most famous generals, but Eirika? Seth, why would you reveal her name in the same exact sentence where you tell her to be careful about revealing her identity?
I also thought it was a nice touch in the localization that Seth a) doesnât mention her real name first, and b) acknowledges her chosen alias immediately after. Even though itâs quite short-lived, at least Seth can play along slightly better.

Desire vs. Responsibility: Eirika and Ephraim
Saw this tag on a reblog of my response meta (on my personal blog) about Eirika and Ephraimâs personalities.
Desire versus Responsibility is actually a huge theme in FE8! Itâs one of those things where once you see it, youâll see it everywhere when you look closely. (As a story analysis, this will obviously contain spoilers.)

The different forms of sibling honorifics in JP FE8
Theyâre not all onii-chan! (Not that itâs gonna change @jehannaâs mind.)
(For those who donât know Japanese, younger siblings are expected to call their older siblings with the proper terms and honorifics, but older siblings will just call younger siblings by name.)
Eirika uses ĺ ä¸ (aniue) to refer to Ephraim. Itâs an archaic word, not used in everday language now, and has extremely formal undertones.
Franz uses ĺ ăă (nii-san) with Forde.
Cormag uses ĺ 貴 (aniki) with Glen, which is an informal/casual form of the word. (On Glenâs part, there is one time that he uses ĺź, ototo/little brother, to talk to Cormag.)
Vanessa calls Syrene ĺ§ăă (nee-san) for the most part, though sometimes sheâll call Syrene âCaptain Syrene.â
Tana calls Innes ăĺ ăăž (onii-sama).
Ewan uses ăĺ§ăĄăă (onee-chan) when talking to Tethys.
Interestingly, Myrrh uses ăăŤăăĄăă (a phonetic spelling of onii-chan) when she asks Ephraim if she can call him âbrother.â I guess itâs to denote that sheâs trying to imitate other peopleâs terms, considering that Eirika says âaniueâ and not âonii-chan.â
Princess and Knight Power Duos on the Epic Tale of Just Rule (from the FE8 Guidebook?)
This crossed my twitter timeline today, so I figured Iâd take a shot at translating it.
There might be some mistakes in the translation, but I think this is pretty accurate. (The question mark after âloyaltyâ/loyal vassal in the last sentence is from the original.) Also, the âJust Ruleâ in the title is translated from çé, which is actually taken from Confucianism (and was then adopted into Japanese). I wasnât sure whether to use âkingly way,â âhumane authority,â or another one of the commonly-used translations for the term. Itâs a bit too complex to fully translate in such a small space.
I'm starting to work on the prologue for Restoration Twins (it's about time I did so), and I should get some of it done today. Would any of you guys like to read a preview of it?
Lyon â Fire Emblem: The Sacred Stones
Hey there! Your restoration twins AU seems awesome, and I suppose you don't want to spoil anything, but I'm intrigued by Eirika and Lyon being foils and the two of them being each others' intended?
Before I start, I just want to say that this made my day. Iâm overjoyed to hear that someone actually cares about Restoration Twins. Iâm also happy to talk about RT in general too.
With that out of the way, I get to the really meat of the ask. Letâs start with Eirika and Lyon being foils. As you know, both Eirika and pre-game Lyon were kind people who would try their best to help their country. Both of them put the needs of others before their own. One of the biggest changes in RT is that Eirika gets the added characterization of having a lack of self-worth (because as much as I like Eirika, I will admit the naĂŻve princess who eventually becomes a lady of war is rather clichĂŠ when played straight. Granted, Eirika is also wise but my point still applies). I also have other reasons for giving her a lack of self-worth, but I would get off topic. Anyway, back to the whole foils concept. The reason I did bring up the added characterization for Eirika is that both Eirika and Lyon have a lack of self-worth/severe feelings of inadequacy and the feeling of being inferior to everyone around them. The big difference between them is that Eirika hides those feelings from others and keeps it in check while Lyon allows those feelings to consume him and allow the Demon King to control/manipulate him. Another huge point that makes them foils is their relationship towards Ephraim. Both of them admire Ephraim and hold jealously towards him. Even when the twins were growing up, Eirika knew their parents loved Ephraim more and gave him more attention. It didnât help that Ephraim was born with many talents while Eirika was born with no talents. Though she does care for her twin brother, there was always this feeling of jealousy inside Eirika. As for Lyon towards Ephraim, everyone pretty much knows this. Just to recap though, Lyon and Ephraim were good friends. Lyon, however, also admits being envious of Ephraim for being stronger than him, confident, and always had Eirika by his side. The big difference there is that Eirika love for her brother is stronger than her jealousy while Lyonâs jealousy also blinded him. Even the way they handle their desire to help their countries and others seem to contrast each other as Lyon goes to the extremes to use Gradoâs Sacred Stone (which not only is the Fire Emblem but also contains the Demon Kingâs soul) while Eirika never goes to that extremes.
Now for being each othersâ intended. It mainly has to do with the strong political ties between Renais and Grado. The ideal marriage between Eirika and Lyon would help further strengthen the ties between the two countries. It also helped that Lyon genuinely loved her (despite Eirika not feeling the same way, and Lyon only confessing his feelings right before he died).
There is one other thing that connects Eirika and Lyon in this AU, but that would be a major spoiler. If you want to know about it though, please instant message (personally, I prefer to call it private messaging or noting). I hope this was somewhat interesting to read even if I did ramble on for a bit, and I apologize for this response for being late. Anyway, Iâm glad to have answered this, and I hope you have a good day!
