Happy Fashion Friday! I know i havent posted in ages. ive been swamped, and should have definitely been filling you in on whats been up. anyways. a big part of this week is the premiere of Catey Shaw's Brooklyn Girls. This vid got A LOT of buzz this week for all of the right and wrong reasons. Now, ive been jamming this song on repeat since February when Catey's manager sent it to me. i love this song. i styled this music video and i couldn't be prouder of the way it turned out. everyone, watch and listen (if you havent been on the internet this week and havent already seen it) and enjoy! xoxo, julie, a bk girl.

happy tutorial tuesday!

so, you go to a show and you get handed a sticker by a band you like, but like, what are you going to do with it? you probably aren't in middle school and want to cover your agenda with it and you probably don't want to throw it away and you probably have a bunch of crap falling off your fridge, so, voila. turn it into a magnet.

have a flat, crappy magnet (sorry, julius)?

stick sticker to magnet, cut out around the shape of the sticker (regular paper scissors) and stick that puppy to the fridge. 

as you can see my fridge is very decorated, but catey made a great addition. if you don't know catey shaw, you are missing out. by far my favorite lady act in NYC right now. get on her.

Happy Spruced Up Saturday!

while sprucing up my purse i realized i always love seeing what other people keep in their bags, so why not share mine?!

here's what's inside:

headphones: panasonic, 3 green tea bags (just in case i need a jolt, or my only water option is evian and i need to flavor it), business cards, pepper spray that looks like perfume (because i live alone), movie ticket vouchers in case i'm ever feeling spontaneous (i've been carrying them for 2 years), EOS in case my lips are chapped, a mirror that looks like a bow, party invites in case i meet someone i want to invite, altoid smalls (in case my breath needs a lift), 2 pilot g2s, 1 dita von teeese nudie pen & 1 mechanical bic pencil because you never know when you'll need to write/draw/lend someone a pen..and it needs to be in style. tuberose handcream, cateye prescription sunglasses, a tampax pearl tampon, and 3 of my favorite MAC lipsticks in case i need a touch up on any of the colors i wear: russian red, candy yum yum or lady danger.

happy monday munchies! the mutt meal!

So, I'm a tiny bit Irish and a bunch of other things (Italian, Swedish, Syrian, polish) so I just like to say that I'm a mutt. Well, here's my take on the traditional Irish meal. The mutt meal. Corned beef & shredded cabbage pasta with toasted pinenuts & cabbage pesto. now, i wasn't a fan of corned beef and i didn't understand cabbage (who boils a boring vegetable. come on, add some flavor..) until i dated my ex boyfriend. he turned me on to this and then once i put my spin on it, there was no turning back. now, traditional irish folk might scoff at this, but really. if you tried this (just try) you'll think differently

cook your corned beef as you do every march. or, however your specific package explains. i put mine in the crock pot all day long on low because i love coming home to the smell. when it's complete. discard the huge fatty parts, shred the meat and put aside. 

in a large pot, boil water for spaghetti (if you want to blow your dinner date out of the water use gnocchi. i did not have it on hand and i was bummed). cook your pasta--spaghetti keeps everything feeling shredded-as directed. 

on a separate burner, drizzle olive oil, a couple of cups of shredded cabbage, a handful of pinenuts and a couple cloves of sliced garlic. don't forget to salt & pepper before you turn your burner on. let that go for as long as it takes your water to boil and your pasta to cook. 

combine all and toss with extra pine nuts if need be. enjoy with a cold beer and do a little jig!

>>i also made a cabbage pesto to accompany this meal by combining in a food processor experimental amounts of the following ingredients: cabbage-carrots-pinenuts-garlic-olive oil-black pepper-parmesan (optional). i found that this ended up a bit too wet for a pesto so beware of that when blending fresh veggies. this was okay, a very good addition to this meal though i'm not sure how much i would use it without this meal. i only used a couple of tablespoons for a pound of pasta so maybe i'm not judging it fairly enough. i tried it the next day as a dip with carrots and it was pretty delicious. <<

Happy Tutorial Tuesday! How i do my bumper bangs

now, let me start by saying that there are probably a million other ways to do this, but since chopping off my hair last month i've been having so much fun experimenting with new ways to style my locks and i've always been fascinated by girls with bumper bangs. what a cool thing, to just have bangs for a night. the drama that these add to any outfit is perfect. my friend, kristina is the hair queen. noone does hair better than her. she told me she was working on a post about these and i was like, "omg, i want to do it" and she told me her trick. those donut bun makers that are all the rage on pinterest? yeah. cut one and roll your bangs up in them. mind=blown. i knew that with my birthday coming up, i'd want to wear a pretty new hairstyle and this was it.

separate your hair pretty far back and pull it forward. take your foam roller and begin rolling. spread your hair across it as you move your way up. while rolling, spread your hair across the roller and pull tightly along the way. the secret in secure bangs is a tight roll, i'm telling you. when you get to the top and your hair is covering the whole thing, bobby pin either side directly into the roller so you are securing many layers of hair at once. spray down to keep things shiny and fierce!

you're done! i put a bandana in sometimes when i don't want to curl the rest of it because, gosh darn, how cute does this look with a bandana?! good luck & enjoy! this can work on so many different lengths of hair, i love when girls with long hair do it. their bangs look so luscious and thick!

happy monday munchies! lovely pizza!

so, i love hearts. always have, always will. when i chose to throw a bday/vday party, i obviously had to incorporate hearts. i needed snacks, love to make pizza, and chose to cut them into heart shapes. this was a super easy pizza with some pesto, italian cheeses, and sliced cherry tomatoes but the way it was cut made it so special. i pressed my dough into a cast iron pan (only way to make pizza now, as far as i'm concerned) and sliced it into 8 wedges. i then cut triangles and shaped each slice into a heart with my kitchen shears/food scissors. easy peasy and what an impact! i absolutely recommend you shaping your slices before serving! so fun & easy!

Pizza Dough. (makes 3 10" round pizzas or 2 sheets) from epicurious

2 envelopes of yeast** 4.5-5.5C flour +more for handling 2C warm water, divided (let your faucet run for a while) 2tsp salt

combine yeast, 1/2C water & 2tbs of fluor in a mixing bowl. whisk to combine and let foam for 10 minutes. in a stand mixer with a dough hook, combine 3C flour, salt & 1.5C water. add the yeast mixture and stir until combined. add an additional Cup of flour and stir until dough separates from side of bowl. let rise for at least an hour, covered, in a nonstick sprayed bowl. cut into however many sections you desire and bake. woo hoo! this also freezes well, wrapped in saran wrap. 

**if you're like me and buy the big bags of yeast, 1 envelope = 2.25 tsp. for this recipe 4.5 tsps is what you would add to the flour & water.

happy sunday style! my vday/bday prom party dress!

pardon the crappy photos. i assumed that the party i threw would be very well documented by cameras, and i assumed wrong! everyone was having too much fun chatting and partying to take photos of what was happening! i guess that's a good thing! anyways, i didn't have a date (when do i ever?!) so I WORE THEM. i made a classic julie dress (sweetheart-princess-circle) with some incredible alexander henry fabric. he is an amazing print designer and i have stared at this fabric for years without having a reason to buy it. this party was the perfect excuse. i was covered in men all night on valentines day. isn't that the dream?

happy spruced up saturday! before & afters of my bathroom!

i am so excited to share with you my brand new bathroom, along with some photos of what it looked like before! my batyhroom has been the same since i moved in 5, yes FIVE years ago. and it really needed a change. i was playing around with different ideas for my bathroom (i thought itwas going to be teal and checkered at one point) and then i settled on this PERFECT PINK. it's called blushing bride by benjamin moore and i hope (and the guy at the hardware store hopes) it brings me luck in my single life. haha. i found this incredible decal on etsy (my friend, kristina sent me an email with it and i immediately bought it) the shelves are ikea that i got cut to fit the wall. i love it so much. every time i pull the shower curtain back when i get out of the shower i can't believe this is my bathroom. it's a dream. and it was all done for very cheap! 

(shelves $30 + decal $32 +paint $25 +supplies $5)

not bad at all! the mason jars look great and the storage on the shelves allowed me to take everythingoff the floor and store it under the sink. it looks so much brighter, bigger and better in there. with the leftover paint, i sanded down a detail on my cabinet, along with the heater pipe that runs the height of my bathroom and painted that to match. what a difference a couple coats of paint make! yay! hope you like it!

happy waistline wednesday

i have never found a morning routine that has such immediate change as this one. when you're waking up, and doing your stretches (which you should do every morning!!) do this:

10 squats 1 push up 9 squats 2 push ups 8 squats 3 push ups 7 squats 4 push ups 6 squats 5 push ups 5 squats 6 push ups 4 squats 7 push ups 3 squats 8 push ups 2 squats 9 push ups 1 squats 10 push ups

in the end that's 55 of each! gets your heart rate up, works your core, upper body and lower body. GET IT. quick and dirty, i love it.
