hi everyone. just browsed the new books section for kids and teens in Barnes and Nobles website with some friends and uhhhh I can say pretty confidently that if you have ever thought about manually writing a story you are already doing better than a good 70% of what appears to be published there! so. well. you should write whatever it is you're worried you can't write well enough because it being a book actually written cohesively by a person is already passing the standard by miles. cannot emphasize how dire it is for books rn. Table Of Contacts.
a real book we found that you could buy off the barnes and nobles website. somehow.
it's dire .
i saw this:
and thought it would be fun to actually work that out. so

tumblr support must dread updates coming out. because it means they will receive very impassioned and detailed emails from me
- Reblogging a post used to require two clicks. The reblog button, and then the post button. Now it takes three to do the exact same thing. This doesn't seem like a lot when stated like that, but it makes me want to reblog less, which is unfortunate as reblogging is Tumblr's core functionality.
- The note count has been removed entirely, separating them into individual reblogs and likes. Before, I could see the number of notes a post had at a glance. Easy. Effortless. Now I have to do math. Bad. Annoying.
- Previously one could go through the activity on a post by clicking the note count. Now, because the note count is gone, viewing who reblogged a post now requires even more clicks. Bad design choice. The location of that information is also not intuitive, particularly if you're used to the old layout.
- Likewise, you could previously view who liked a post by clicking on the note count. Now, unless someone has reblogged the post already, you cannot view the likes on a post AT ALL, because the menu to do so is only available on posts with reblogs. What?????
- You moved the edit and delete buttons from the post footer into the top right corner drop down menu. Unintuitive: why would buttons related to generating content (like the reblog button) be hidden in a separate menu? And again: previously, editing a post took one click. Now I have to go searching for the option.
This is an even wilder choice on Tumblr's part because there's SO MUCH empty space in between icons (bad design choice) so, it's not like there's not space for them.
- Similarly, liking and deleting reblogs is also now unintiuitive. There are two "more option" drop down menus on a reblogged post: one at the top header, and one underneath, next to the body of the original post. That's silly on its own - but even more so because the edit and delete buttons only appear on one menu, and not the other. Confusing!
- It occurs to me that the layout and functionality of the new post header is probably trying to mimic Twitter/Bluesky/etc? I hate this. If I wanted to use Twitter or Bluesky, I would open up Twitter or Bluesky. I come to Tumblr to use Tumblr. Why remove Tumblr's unique, defining features?
Watching people talk about terrible Tumblr updates that haven't hit you yet is like
Potentially hot take but one of the reasons we need art and music in schools is that, taught correctly, they are ideal avenues for teaching kids how to do something, kinda suck at it, keep going anyways and improve over time.
And THAT is one of the most valuable skill sets a human being can have. THAT is the skill set that unlocks soooooo many others.
A LOT of people I see with anxiety and depression do not have this skill set. To suck at something is a threat. Proof that they are doomed to suck at it forever. And then, often, that either THEY suck forever or the task must be stupid/useless/pointless (whence we get AI art fans who have decided actually making art is pointless and degrading the labor and skills of others is fine because these are useless skills).
Or you get the freeze- the inability to try things in case you fail. The sudden lancing shame and humiliation or hopelessness. The sense that anything you haven't learned by now you can't learn. Which is so heartbreaking and so untrue.
I just hate it.
"What if I write it and it's bad" "what if I draw it and it's bad" "what if I play it and it sounds bad" DOING IT BAD IS HOW YOU LEARN TO DO IT GOOD! You can't skip the process of leaning and the process is FUN if you let it be what it needs to be!
“What if it gets worse?” What if it gets better?
