i kind of don’t relate to the way other people Hate fictional characters in fandom spaces most of the time because to me a character is first and foremost a vehicle for Making A Story so if the character does Story. then it’s good. i don’t know how to explain what i mean by this. the only time i feel like i dislike a character is when i feel like their presence is not interesting and isn’t doing anything for my experience of Story. you know.

"I'm finally going to get my fucking revenge, you goddamned clown." Adam snarled, stomping a foot down into the concrete of lost souls that made the foundation of Pentagram City. An axe hung in his claws, dripping with the blood of countless sinners he'd cut down to call out the King of Hell.
Lucifer hovered in the air about the street for a moment, before his wings folded inwards and he landed, eying Adam cautiously. Too many souls knew his weakness now, and Adam was happy to take advantage of it now that he was a sinner.
"For everything you've done to me, I'm going to make you pay a thousand times ov-"
"Who are you?" Lucifer asked, and his weary expression had shifted to a squint of confusion.
Adam faltered. He looked different, but not that different. "...Adam?"
A blank look took home on Lucifer's face. "Which Adam? There's been like, a few million, over the centuries."
Rage boiled up inside him, and Adam launched forward with a broken scream. He swung, but Lucifer dodged it effortlessly, as though they were dancing upon a blood red ball room.
"I'm the Adam. I'm the first Adam. I'm the only true Adam." Adam wanted to say, but the words didn't come to him, he could only swing, fight, and try to claw his way into towards Lucifer. It was for not, but Adam had an eternity to try and kill him. It's not like Lucifer could injure h-
With a sharp crack, Adam's face stung as it was hit to the side, his lip bleeding instantly as he found himself on the ground. Lucifer straddled him, with a sharp cheeky grin spread across his face. His hand wrapped around Adam's throat, but he only squeezed hard enough to let Adam know who was in control.
"Oh," Lucifer let out a small laugh. "You're that Adam. Long time no see, bud, but it could have been longer. A lot longer."
Adam let out a small wheeze, like the air had been knocked out of his lungs. This wasn't supposed to happen. Lucifer wasn't supposed to be able to injure sinners-
"You've never been all that smart, and I can read your face like a bedtime story." Lucifer said with a happy tilt to his voice. "Adam, Adam, dear Adam. You're not human. You realize that, don't you? You were made to make humans. You're the father of humanity. But you...You're made of the earth." Lucifer purred out, but something in Adam sunk.
"You know what that means, don't you?" Lucifer leaned down, his large eyes turning a haunting crimson. "You're dirt. You're nothing. And I can do whatever I want to you."
Adam awoke with a gasp that didn't want to reach his lungs, his shoulders shaking as he struggled to breathe in deeply. It hurt, everything in him burned a cold sharp spike with every movement he made. He coughed out, once, then the motion overtook him, and he couldn't stop it, until he was hunched over on his knees, choking on each cough. Blood and bile spilled from his lips, and it was only then that he could breathe again.
"I always wondered what happened with you." A voice called, and Adam knew it unfortunately too well. He glanced over his shoulder, breathing ragged, to find Lucifer perched on the side of a desk. They were in a room? When had that happened? When had he blacked out?
"When you were made, I mean... Lilith compared to you?!" Lucifer asked with a laugh, scratching at his cheek as though it was a real thinker of a question. "She's gorgeous, beautiful. Smart, considerate, thoughtful, clever. And you..."
Lucifer's gaze dragged downwards onto Adam finally, and the separation between them had never felt so large. "We, the other seraphim, used to say, you know... Lilith was born from porcelain clay, beautiful, flawless. Adam was born from mud. With all the sticks and pebbles you'd expect." Lucifer waved a hand at him. "All those little icky ugly dirty things. That's you!"
Adam let himself breathe for a minute, not responding. He didn't want to, not immediately.
Because part of him knew it was true. When he died and arrived in heaven, he was treated like a fucking pet at first, an oddity. They appeased him, but Adam knew how they felt about him. Lesser. Until his strength was made known. Then, they made him their attack dog, chained up in the yard, forgotten until Lilith began to brew tensions of rebellion.
Adam sat up on his legs, reaching a hand up to brush hair out of his eyes. Lucifer watched with intrigued eyes, looking like he wanted Adam to lash out. To put him in his place again.
"You know what they said about you?" Adam asked, voice hoarse. The humor began to fall from the mask that was Lucifer, the Morningstar. "The falling star, the jester, the traitor, the most human angel."
Lucifer's eyes turned red, and he pushed off the desk.
"That's what really pisses you off about me, isn't it?" Adam asked him with a mad laugh. "I'm the ugly fucking mistake, I'm not smart, I'm not beautiful, I'm violent, I'm pissed off, I'm bored, and I wanted to do more. Just like you. Except they kept me."
Lucifer grabbed a handful of Adam's hair and pulled it hard, tilting Adam's chin up to look him in the eyes. "It means you're worse than dirt." Adam whispered, before his face was slammed back into the ground again.
"I wonder if your daughter knows how much of a monster you are, behind your persona." Adam asked, legs stretched out in front of him as he sat on the cold floor. He'd tried getting out of the room he was being kept in, days on end, but to no avail. Whatever magic Lucifer had used, it wasn't budging.
At this point his only hope was to get Lucifer to let him out. So, Adam knew he wasn't leaving outside of a body bag, but at least he could try and speed up that process.
"I don't have a persona." Lucifer mused from the desk, not looking up from the duck thing he'd been working on. "I'm exactly what you see."
"You're a shapeshifter," Adam retorted, and a flicker of a smile crossed Lucifer's face from the small sliver Adam could make of it. "Does she know you were all too happy to agree to the exterminations? I texted you, hey, you want me to kill all those disgusting freaks down there? Do us all a favor? You know what you said?"
"Who is this?" Lucifer quoted him, glancing back at Adam. True enough.
"After that, you said yes, yes please. You said they were so annoying, so filthy, you hated even having to look at them." Adam said, leaning forward. "Does she know that?"
Lucifer spun on his stool to look at Adam more properly. "She does, actually. She knows exactly how I feel about their kind. See, my child actually talks to me. I support her, not because I love sinners, or love humans - oh, oh no, no, no. I still despise your lot. I just love her more. You could have tried that, maybe your kids wouldn't have ended up down here."
Adam shut his mouth, looking away.
"... Abel is in heaven." Adam got out, finally. The rest of them, fuck, he didn't know where he went wrong with them.
"And how did he die?" Lucifer pressed, tilting his head, serpentine eyes locked on him. "You didn't protect him. You weren't strong enough."
Adam stared at the wall, away from the yellow light streaming in through the windows. It was too bright, even in Hell.
"You don't even know, do you?" Adam asked quietly, and that took Lucifer by surprise. "Lucifer, I died first."
Lucifers brows furrowed, his protect behind him forgotten. He'd always been like that, as soon as he got focused on something, he didn't see anything else around him. "How? I thought you lived to nearly a tho-"
Adam let out a bark of a laugh, leaning his head back against the wall. "That sounds like a fucking nightmare... Being alive as long as I was, was a nightmare."
Something passed across Lucifer's face, an expression Adam had never seen some aimed at him before. Something close to sympathy?
"Like you said, I'm full of sticks and twigs and I'm not made right." Adam breathed out, looking back to meet his eyes. "I was so fucking tired. I wasn't strong enough."
At dusk, I’ll find you
A realization
