The historical research is a little lacking, but not horrifically so, too. Like–everyone is wearing shoes about 1000 years too early, but Atem’s reign? It’s set in the 18th Dynasty, which is incorrect (it’s the most famous one in history–if there were a gap of three pharaohs somewhere we’d know), but his story fits very well in the Second Intermediate Period, which is offset from the 18th Dynasty by less than a hundred years. Maha’ad wears clothing very similar to what might actually be expected from a pharaoh or a high favored noble (in the more recent movie he’s actually shown with headgear similar to the Crown of Lower Egypt and some kind of facial marking that looks like it might be a beard), and of the other priests, only Karim is wildly out of place–all the robe lengths are right, the colors are mostly right (including Set wearing blue), the bare arms are right, and for that matter the thing that marks Karim as being out of place is that his clothing is too low-class for his position, not that it’s actually inaccurate as Khemetic clothing. (Having his arms free that way would be more accurate on a soldier or laborer. This is actually why I usually note Karim as the court scribe.)
The buildings shown? Mostly accurate, including the Royal Palace appearing to be made of mud bricks. The biggest bitch I have with the research is that the Nile appears nowhere in the manga, and having Khemet without the Nile is like … . having Manhattan, but no Times Square. Yeah, the lack of chronology is frustrating, but literally even in the Millennium Items we have stuff that makes 100% sense in the context of Khemetic culture. Set carries the Rod–which in real life is actually a pharaohnic symbol, and so makes sense as the possession of next-in-line to the throne. The scales? Feather of Ma’at. The Ankh? Considered a symbol of life and protection, and we see it being used to divine the deepest purposes of a person’s life. (Also its being referred to as the Millennium Key is accurate–simple keys first appeared in the Middle Kingdom.) Hell, the Eye makes sense–Eye of Horus, which in mythology was lost in a battle with Set. (Note that this actually sets up Akhnadin’s storyline as the “rightful king”–he takes the Eye, which marks him as the “Horus” in this story.)

OK but I do genuinely believe we need to push for something like this before it's too late - and not just in digital spaces. We should have the right to peace and quiet from advertising. There should be more limits on how much and where we get advertising because otherwise it'll just become a creep of more and more until every fucking public space is lit with several billboards blasting us with ads, and the walls between spaces lined with ads, and our commutes filled with ads, and local parks sponsored by corporations to offset the cost of local councils, and so on and on and on and on. No. I need quiet. I need spaces where ads cannot touch me.
Grenoble, France, in 2014 banned any new billboards and took down the city owned ones in a step towards de-advertizing public spaces. They swapped out the billboards with trees btw!
The city of Nantes in western France has recently banned most electronic billboards, dismantling 110 in one night. The municipality is also cutting digital advertising in shop windows and on the public transport system. It’s also banned all advertising near schools. Which is apart of Frances over all goal to reduce visual noise and light.

Ngl I hate golf and I'm all for this. They put a golf course in our public park at the expense of hundreds of centuries-old live oak trees. Half of the walk around the park you're just looking at an empty golf course. Like 2 people want to play golf. So annoying.
Golf was a game developed in Scotland, where it rains up to 250 days of the year, and where the courses use very hard-wearing grass. The sand in the bunkers is because it used to be played on the coast - these traditional courses are called "Links" courses. The top Links course in Scotland, Royal Dornoch, uses no mains water at all. They have their own rainwater collection system.
It wasn't originally intended to be played in the middle of a desert on lush green turf that takes thousands of gallons of water a day to maintain. Unless you can keep the course alive using only rainwater collection, it shouldn't exist.

im not saying that a certain group is doing it, but im saying that there are groups who have chosen to ignore what intersex people have said on other platforms (specifically tumblr) because they believe tumblr is like 4chan and isnt a valid source of information (can't blame them but tumblr isnt a news site, it's for human beings to share their experiences. if you want intersex people to share their experiences, many are on tumblr.) I was formally someone who had been labeled intersexist because of what I was doing and how I was actively spreading misinformation, and I never want to do that shit again because I realized that it's just not worth bastardizing an entire group of people just because it's easier for you. intersex people helped me realize that and i stopped and changed for the better.

Oh my god, yeah, allergies can be so disabling, and I'm always glad when I see other people saying this. I'm also glad to see a rejection of "but they're mainstream," because I'm convinced that absolutely is the thought process of many ableists denying that allergy discrimination happens, and/or denying that allergies are disabilities. For that reason, I want to break down why "but they're mainstream" is wrong.
When people deny that allergies are a disability, or are discriminated against, using the argument that they're "mainstream," I can think of at least two dangerous misconceptions that they're falling prey to:
First is the misconception that allergies, in general, are mainstream i.e. well-known by the public, just because most people have heard of some common allergies before.
Second is the misconception that peanut allergies, and other allergies people have heard of, are automatically treated well solely because people have heard of them.
As someone with both "weird/rare" and "normal/common" allergies, I'd like to tell some stories about how most of my allergies aren't understood in the mainstream, and how even my most common allergy is still a disability in spite of supposedly decent public awareness. I have a lot to say about this, so the post under the cut is extremely long. Be warned.
I'll limit this discussion to food allergies only, but even then, the range of potentially allergenic substances is incredibly vast. For example, I'm allergic to peanuts and tree nuts. Most people don't get their minds blown or worldviews rocked by that fact. They saw or heard about the nut-free cafeteria table in their or their kids' elementary school, or they've seen "contains peanuts" in bold at the end of ingredient labels. Most people have.
But that doesn't mean most of them won't still be shocked, disbelieving, or most of all, utterly unequipped to accommodate my corn allergies.
Public awareness of one allergen doesn't translate to public awareness of the needs of all people with food allergies. On that note, what are some of my needs as a corn-allergic person that are almost never met?
No restaurants list corn on their allergy information sheets, because it's not a common enough allergen. So I can't eat at restaurants, and that's socially isolating from the get-go. Even if restaurants list ingredients for each menu item, there will probably still be ambiguity — just like there is when I shop for groceries, because there are ingredients that are everywhere that simply may or may not be derived from corn. "Modified food starch" usually means corn starch, potato starch, or tapioca starch in the USA, but it never actually specifies or has to specify which one — so people with allergies have to play guessing games. People with grain or nightshade allergies especially — "Will this poison me or not? Can I find an alternative? Or is this potential poison the only thing I might have a chance to eat tonight?"
The question of alternatives is a potent one, because did I mention that either corn starch, or "stealth corn starch," are in absolutely everything? This means shredded cheese, yogurt, bread, gluten-free bread, processed meat, whipped cream, powdered sugar, baking powder, some bottled soft drinks (????), and my prescription medications. It's in my prescription medications. It's in my pills. It's in my medications. It's in my medications.
The reality of this situation is not whatever the hell ableists think "mainstream" is. This is not a "trend" that people are hopping on, nor is it a problem that has public awareness. People who don't have a corn allergy, know someone with a corn allergy, or read a niche article/Tumblr post by/about someone with a corn allergy just don't know this. They don't know what we're dealing with. This isn't "mainstream."
Corn isn't classified as one of the "main 9" allergens where I live (America), so it doesn't have to be labeled as rigorously, and that's technically part of the problem — but that doesn't necessarily indicate a fix, either. Sesame being added to the list caused its own problems, and even if it hadn't, well... even allergies in that "main 9" designation are still not necessarily "mainstream" themselves. In fact, some are so invisible, forgotten, and non-accommodated that it leads to straight-up medical neglect.
Case in point: I have a soy allergy, with prevalance towards the low end of the main 9, and affecting 0.2 to 0.3% of the US and Canadian population by most estimates — which doesn't sound like a lot, until you realize that means that 69 million soy-allergic people across just those two countries is the conservative estimate. This is not a rare disease. "Contains: Soy" is printed on millions of food labels, and for extremely good reason.
But for some reason, I've been to a hospital that screened me for egg and dairy allergies, but not for soy allergies, despite the fact that they fed me all three as part of separate procedures.
They made me consume the eighth-most common allergen in my country — one of my allergens — while I was already sick and seeking diagnosis. I can only assume they fucking forgot that soy allergies existed.
I'm not at risk of life-threatening anaphylaxis from soy, thankfully. But would you guess the reason I was at that hospital in the first place? The reason I needed diagnosis and treatment for severe, persistent gastrointestinal issues?
Yeah, it was soy and corn allergies.
(Side note: about a year after this incident, I took a food ethics class in college, and it was an overall good experience. However, I had to read multiple essays and watch multiple documentaries where some individuals made some interesting claims. For example, the claim that any human can live off a soy-based diet instead of an animal-based diet, the claim that plant protein-based diets are inherently healthier than animal protein-based diets, and the claim that "not caring about the environment" is the only reason to eat an animal protein-based diet instead of a plant (soy/legume) protein-based one.
I often wonder if any of the staff at that hospital had exposure to, or agreed with, any of these beliefs. I just wonder.)
In this post, I've been incrementally moving up the list of my allergies, in terms of prevalence/public awareness. First with corn, outside the main 9 altogether, then with soy, one of the main 9's most forgotten children. So naturally, I should conclude with the most prevalent, well-known, downright stereotypical allergen I have: peanuts.
I'll be the first to point out: yes, living with peanut allergies is definitely less aggravating. Dedicated peanut-free facilities are out there, making stuff like substitutes for peanut butter... even if the products are overpriced. Labeling is at least somewhat better... even though peanut oil is in a lot of bullshit for no reason (and sometimes, they forget to put it in the bolded list at the end, which might be the only part that some people with only peanut allergies read, especially when milk, soy, et cetera are bolded... hey, don't trust Kroger to bold their allergens, by the way. No one in my allergy-heavy family had a reaction, but it was scary when we realized).
Back when I only had peanut and tree nut allergies, I could actually eat at restaurants.... even though there was always a small risk, because you never know. Back then, I could secure access to food I could eat even when I was away from home, so I could actually travel. I could get on a plane to visit relatives in different states....
Even though getting on a plane was also a risk. And continues to be a risk, for people with peanut allergies today. Why? Well, to give just one example...
As of 2024, Snickers was actively advertising itself as a fun little airplane treat, for passengers to bring on planes. Despite the fact that exposure to peanuts, in a low-ventilation environment like a plane, without access to medical care, is how peanut allergies become fatal peanut allergies. They've been rightfully called out for this, and have not pulled the commercial.
Epi-Pens, and even their off-brand equivalents, can cost thousands under a bad enough medical system. My brother and I are sharing an Epi-Pen two-pack right now, each carrying around only one injector for emergencies, because a two-pack for each of us would've been another thousand and something dollars. And we're lucky overall, because we're insured.
Peanut allergies are clearly a disability. A disability that often isn't labeled as such, which makes it so much harder to fight ableism against us while still being taken seriously. And that's before we even scratch the surface of other allergies. Of other related disabilities.
And then, there are intersecting axes of oppression.
Pulling just from FARE's fact sheet:
Emergency department visits and hospitalizations to treat food allergy reactions result in costs that are 2.5 times higher for low-income children than for children of families with higher incomes.
Compared to non-Hispanic White children, African American children are at significantly elevated risk of developing food allergy.
Among children on Medicaid, Black children are 7 percent more likely to develop food allergies than White children.
Black children are two to three times more likely than White children to suffer a fatal allergic reaction to food.
Compared to White children, Black and Hispanic children are twice as likely to have a severe food allergy reaction and to visit the emergency department.
Like so many other disabilities, food allergies have a disproportionate impact on those who are already marginalized by class, and especially by race. Not only is it a disability justice issue, it's a racial justice issue, with emphasis on combatting medical racism.
Food allergies are a disability. In many cases, a severe disability. I am personally too chronically ill to support myself, and that's almost entirely because of allergies. Food allergy advocacy does exist, and people do good work — I've already linked to FARE a few times, because they're some of those food allergy advocates — but the sooner that everyone concerned with intersectional social justice recognizes food allergy justice as a wing of disability justice, and includes it in activism, the better.
I reblogged and rambled in the tags but I had to say something about this. I was and am allergic to a TON of food and non food stuffs (I went through just about every heavy duty treatment money could buy in Brazil in the late 2000s so now I'm a lot better). Very few people understand the FEAR of not being able to trust your food. I live in a very tropical country and am deathly allergic to mangos, I'm at a constant fear of cross contamination when eating at places that serve mango dishes. Once the school nurse handed me the wrong period cramp medication and I went into laryngeal oedema and almost suffocated.
Being so hyper aware of everything you eat is so fucking stressful and then you go to a work party with foods you don't know, no one knows the ingredients so you end up eating nothing all night and labeled as a buzzkill because you kept asking the ingredients. And then you do that for every party for the rest of your life. It exhausting. Every meal has the potential of being a stealth allergen, cross contamination is my worst nightmare, sometimes you eat the lesser reaction foods because the social situation was so fun and the food so good and what's the harm in having some skin rashes tomorrow (pray that today is the day your immune system decides to go full super Saiyan).
It's so fucking exhausting and all you get from people when you try to tell them to be careful with your food is mild contempt and no certainty that there will actually any type of action to accommodate and if you give up on trying to accommodate and not eat people think you're rude.

Just don't use "AFAB trans woman", as it forces trans women to use "AMAB" or "male", aligning your goal with that of TERFs.
the creators / moderators of Shinigami Eyes are doubling down on the intersexism and exorsexism, and flat out refusing to aknowledge that it's being abused to paint literally any trans people who are not radfems as anti-trans for talking about their own oppression and supporting solidarity
They're now accusing anyone who was AFAB who identifies as transfeminine of "aligning your goal with TERFs" by trying to force trans women to identify as AMAB, and thus as male.....
when that's literally not how any of this works. You can literally just call yourself a trans woman or transfeminine. Other people using the word transfeminine in the way it was supposedly designed to be used is not forcing you to call yourself male.
Well, it turns out that the Shinigami Eyes extension is labeling trans men, intersex people, and those who speak on their behalf as being inherently transphobic, with the devs claiming that "Appropriating trans women's language ... is not okay." They state that slurs against non-binary people are a-okay, as are slurs specifically against transmascs. I can no longer recommend this extension.
