thinking about Puella Magi Madoka Magica again. like, they really did have the devil create god through the pursuit of freewill and subversion of predestination. And god initially created the devil through love that is ultimately erased and forgotten, and then the devil kills god because she cannot let her go.

and that's all just how it feels to be 13 and in middle school.

LRB has me thinking about how, despite being a MadoHomu shipper myself, more and more I've come to see their relationship in canon (at least in the original series and Rebellion) as an unreciprocated crush on Homura's part. Not because I think Madoka is straight or Homura specifically just doesn't appeal to her or anything like that but because I don't think Madoka has a strong enough idea of who she is or what she wants to have romantic feelings for anybody.

She's characterized in the original series especially as someone who is struggling to find herself and her place in the world. She doesn't see herself as being useful or particularly good at anything and doesn't have any strong ambitions besides alleviating the suffering of others. That last post exemplified how she lives this through completely changing the opinions she expresses to Homura based on what she thinks will bring the other girl the most comfort. She adapts who she is for the happiness of others.

And this characterization is crystalized in Madoka's ultimate choice to give up on being a person entirely in order to become a cosmic force of ending others' suffering.

Homura's fight is to not only save Madoka's life but to beg her to stop and think of herself for once in her goddamn life, to see herself as an already wonderful and lovable person who doesn't have to be useful to anybody. She loves Madoka in a way that Madoka seems incapable of loving herself, wants the things that Madoka seemingly won't allow herself to want.

And I think being able to have a crush on someone is a part of that. I think Madoka can't want Homura back unless she learns to value herself as an individual and to let her heart have its own self-centered desires.

sorry homura but this is so funny. imagine meeting someone for the first time and going “sorry i have a weird name” which prompts them to hastily reassure you that its not a weird name but then later after you’ve reset the timeline back to before you ever met her and you tell her your name without apologizing for it this time you find out her actual natural first reaction wouldve been “homura? weird as hell name…” and also by now you have a crush on her

Okay this also represents a really interesting pattern of characterization for Madoka.

At the end of the initial series, Madoka sacrifices a life with her (living) friends and family to bring an end to the suffering of all magical girls. Homura is absolutely devastated by this, but Madoka reassures her of her decision with a smile on her face.

In Rebellion, however, when Homura asks a Madoka who’s now besties with her and doesn’t remember making this sacrifice how she would feel if she could never see her friends and family again, Madoka answers that this would sadden her greatly. (She is of course missing the context of what this sacrifice would be in exchange for, but nonetheless it’s a very different answer than that of the Madoka who did not shed a single tear over making that choice in the past.)

When Homura is outwardly anxious about her name, Madoka reassures her that her name isn’t strange at all. But when Homura acts completely standoffish instead, Madoka comments on Homura’s name being unusual in an awkward attempt to break the tension between them.

Taken together, these moments paint a picture of Madoka as a person whose outwardly expressed opinions vary greatly depending on what she thinks will most assuage the person she’s interacting with. Or at least that’s how she is with Homura.

madoka magica as a metaphor for the exploitation of young workers in poorer countries. they’re lured into taking demanding jobs that are clearly not safe for their age by the opportunity of earning money that could be used to support their disadvantages only to be overworked into becoming a mere shell of themselves that cannot even back out of their work because they would end up in an even worse state if they do.

perhaps that’s why kyubey didn’t go after hitomi. because hitomi didn’t have any disadvantages she was so desperate to fix that she would allow him to exploit

I was hoping the next one would be our lizard friend, and I was not disappointed! I think this may be the first time we get a frontal view of its face... you can see it has a similar smile to the Clara Dolls, lol.

I hope we get to see a lot more of it in the movie, just the bits from the trailer - and how versatile of a shapeshifter it is - are fascinating.

Also an open question for me if there is genuinely only one lizard or if there are a host of lizards (Clara Dolls?) that end up becoming one big lizard by the end. would you rather fight lots of small lizards or one really big lizard, etc etc.

I'm also very curious if the mirror Homura also has her own lizard or equivalent, and what exactly she has up her sleeve. So far we haven't seen any of her costumes, transformations, or paraphernalia aside from the umbrella and the cog-themed rotary phones, and I highly doubt that's all of it.

Actually, now that I think of it, the rotary phones are an interesting example because there are a host of identical phones vs. the real Homura's single rotary phone. If the real Homura's "lizard phone" is literally a lizard, it really makes me wonder what's going on with the cog phones and if they have any kind of similar transformation.

So I love the Ascendance of a Bookworm light novel. Used to read a fan translation online before it was officially released. Was super fun. Thank you to that person. But I need to rant about the anime. And yes, I understand animes need change some things but they really needed to do better with characterization.

Don't get me wrong I still enjoy it, and it's an okay adaptation 6/10 (manga is about a 7.8/10, depending on the part). But it annoys me how much they watered down Myne. Like she's so much more childish. I can see why anime only people are so put off by Myne's future relationship.

They take out all her cunning, calculating, and scheming nature. Example: Myne does so much more to improve both her and Lutz's family situations. Or how SHE'S the one who decides to hide certain recipes so she has leverage with nobles. Zor during the church attack scene smart Myne was with her barrier.

Now besides all the stuff they do with Myne they cut out so much of the fun details. I feel bad for anime only who don't know about Shuu(Lol to the accidental curse), the general the stuff we learn we learn about "Urano", and so much more.

Edit because I forgot: A very important detail they left out is when Ferdinand gives Myne the potion so he can read her memories, she finds the potion sweet. It may seem unimportant but it plays an important role later.
