An explainer for why I don't fuck with algorithmic social media
If you give a pigeon a little button to peck that releases pigeon food, it will push the button when it's hungry.
If you give a pigeon a button to peck that releases food every 5 pecks, it will peck it more often.
If you give a pigeon a button to peck that releases food at a randomly selected, always shifting number of pecks, the pigeon will peck that fucking button all day long.
Algorithm based social media is not set up to give you the best most fun stuff all the time, it is set up to give you a bunch of stress and nothingness with a randomized reward of something that actually makes you happy, because they want you pecking that button all damn day. It is a slot machine of content, meant to keep you putting in quarters made of your time and attention till you've nothing yet.
At least if I'm having a shit day on my own Tumblr home feed it's because I've made a bad choice about who to follow and I can fix it.
"Uhhhhhhhhh dont romanticize china" nobody is, stupid. People are learning that Chinese citizens are regular people like themselves. They have big problems with their government too, just like us. They do not, however, appear to struggle as much as Americans do just to survive. A bunch of them have expressed shock and horror at how easy it is to become homeless in America and how hard it is to get back out of homelessness. Literally that one thing alone would make China a safer place for many Americans to live. That and the cheap health care, cheap housing, and lack of property taxes. Literally the country our own government paints as a suffering hellhole is still easier to be poor in than this one.
They are aghast to hear that in America you have to keep giving the government money or your house will be taken away. They keep asking why we wouldn't rise up and kill our leaders for that alone. It sounds like unthinkable oppression to them that you can't just buy a house and land and have eternal automatic right to keep it.
I'd like to once again remind everyone that Chinese people talking shit about China on Chinese social media is a major no-no and will absolutely bring the attention of the authorities to the perpetrator.
The Onion’s journalism is the only journalism that matters. Holy fuck.
Rape threats and death threats are "a few mean words"? I'm not even gonna add any obligatory statements. What JKR received was not "a few mean words"
Reblog if you’re 30 or older
This is an experiment to see if there really are as few of us as people think. You can also use this to freak out your followers who think you’re 25 or something. Yay!
Tumblr I am on my knees BEGGING you to stop showing me the flesh hat. What the fuck.
It's like the fuckin Pikachu ad guy all over again 😬
I fucking hate the flesh hat, it’s so creepy!!! Stop showing it to me, Tumblr!
Flesh hat sucks but I'll take it over ads for game of empires or kings choice or whatever creepy ass video game was being advertised. And goddamn weedmaps
I need you people to realize that you can be friends with people older than you. like, much older than you. like, decades older than you. you can be friends with these people. regular friends, just like anyone your age. it is possible.
Important! Your pet's RFID chip number might have been disconnected this week.
The Texas-based company, Save This Life, has ceased operations and that could become an issue for pet owners.
Is your pet chipped? They should be. Do you know who made the chip?
Pet RFID chips are so small that there's really only room on them for a serial number. When your lost pet is brought to a shelter or a vet's office, they can scan the chip, read that number, and then type it into a program that draws from a series of linked databases to find your name and phone number. That's how they find you, and tell you that Silly Lilly von Wigglesbottom has gone wandering, and she's safe and sound, and would you come get her, please?
Texas-based Save This Life, which provided chips to vets and shelters all across the US, has all at once and abruptly gone dark; their database is just gone. Their customers were not given warning and so did not know to change their registration to another company. A lot of animals have basically become anonymous now.
If you don't know what company you've been using, call your vet's office and ask what pet chip number they have on file. If the chip number starts with 991 or 900164, it's probably a Safe This Life chip.
If it turns out yours is one of the affected cases, the chip itself will still be fine! There's no need to add another, or anything like that. You'll just need to transfer the number to another company, and your vet should be able to recommend the one that they like the best.
Trump and Musk are professional grifters, do not accept ANYTHING they say they did at face value because a lot of is impossible or illegal (and therefor being stopped and challenged) and they are depending solely on people's ignorance of that. When Musk claimed that he "deleted" Direct File on twitter, he was not oblivious or making a mistake, he was outright lying to both please conservatives and to make people not even try to use Direct File so that Republicans can claim that it's a useless program.
Republicans, lying: This program was shut down/doesn't exist.
People: Oh, okay, guess I'll use something else :(
Republicans: Omg can you believe we're spending so much money on programs no one uses because we said they don't exist?? Defund them now!!!
today i found out that when monarch butterflies migrate south for the winter, all the ones that go across the middle of lake superior suddenly stop going south and go west for five miles and then continue south. which really freaked scientists out cos like What is in the Middle of Lake Superior what do Butterflies know that We Dont Is This The End Times etc. anyway turns out about a hundred million years ago there was a mountain there and the butterflies still think they gotta fly around it. classic butterflies
Y’all, unfortunately, this is just not true. A few months ago, I urged people on this site to be skeptical specifically about ecology & wildlife biology posts with no sources. This is a perfect example.
This post has made its rounds for ten years (originally posted in 2015), and the earliest source I have ever been able to find for this claim is an article posted in 2013, which says:
“Biologists, and certain geologists, believe that something was blocking the monarchs’ path. They believe that that part of Lake Superior might have once been one of the highest mountains ever to loom over North America.”
Who these “biologists” and “certain geologists” are is a mystery. The article links two sources:
A 1996 publication on Monarch migrations in The Journal of Experimental Biology, which does not mention this lost mountain range.
The 1974 nonfiction narrative Pilgrim at Tinker Creek by Annie Dillard.
Dillard is an acclaimed author and nature writer, but she is not a biologist or geologist and cannot be referenced as such. The referenced excerpt from Pilgrim at Tinker Creek:
Dillard credits this claim to nameless entomologists and a book with no title. It’s a dead end. Bear in mind, the entomologists and books who may have made this claim, which Dillard later read, would have done so pre-1974.
The truth about monarch butterfly migrations may lack the sci-fi/fantasy allure of a mountain range that exists only in a butterfly’s primordial memory, but it’s still incredible.
These creatures with magnificently intelligent and fragile bodies are believed to use internal solar and magnetic compasses to traverse mountains and lakes:
Recent studies of the iconic fall migration of monarch butterflies have illuminated the mechanisms behind the navigation south, using a time
Each fall, monarch butterflies across Canada and the United States turn their orange, black and white-mottled wings toward the Rio Grande an
The geologic history of Gichigami, aka Lake Superior, is also extremely cool:
The Lake Superior Basin’s Fiery Beginning (2002, some facts might have changed)
Rockin’ the Rift, The Billion-Year-Old Split that Made Us (2018, working wih the author of the 2002 article)
But as far as I can find, there is no Monarchs’ memories of a long-lost mountain which dictates their modern-day migration route. If anyone has more insight on this, I would appreciate it, because I am not an entomologist. I specialize in marine science and scientific interpretation, and I only used those skills to find and present what I believe is the best available information on this topic. Thank you!
haven’t seen this post in like 8 years and this morning it shows up with 100,000 debunks. this person is correct, my sources were an annie dillard book and a girl who was working in the butterfly room at the Richmond Virginia botanical gardens. I was young, impetuous. Thought I had the world on a string. Hotheaded and ready to believe any girl who told me facts about bugs. Sorry for misleading half a million people on archaic butterfly knowledge
When I reblogged it I was thinking “OP might not even remember making this post tbh.”
In 2015 I shared a post on here about birds told to me by my own wildlife professor, which turned out to be false and was corrected by an ornithologist. betrayed by my own schooling……
the pistachio food trend is soooo interesting because it's like. i've been following the californian pistachio water politics for years, as a californian with personal connections to agricultural workers but! basically there's been a big push in california agriculture over the last decade to pressure farmers to produce pistachios, because iran has dominated the global market in pistachios for decades, and the US government has been trying to weaken iran economically, so they want to make california pistachios a competitor. which is ridiculous, because california's agricultural infrastructure is suffering under a drought, and pistachios take insane amounts of water. so a ton of water is being redirected from the people in order to engage in a trade war with iran over fucking. pistachios.
anyway now that the US (i.e. california) is producing more pistachios than iran, the next step is to drive consumption of pistachios, so that the farmers who are producing these pistachios can continue to make money on them. ergo all the fancy pistachio coffees at starbucks and similar shit like suddenly being able to find pistachio butter in grocery stores when five years ago it was exclusively available at specialty stores and online, and the huge boom in pistachios foods in instagram and tiktok recipe content. like i watch a lot of instagram foodie reels (cooking/baking is one of my hobbies) and these get thrown onto everyone's feeds, to promote the purchasing of pistachios, so that the US can stick it to iran. it's. kind of incredible to watch this happen in real time, because it sounds like deranged conspiracy thought, but like. i've been watching this trend for the past decade and it's fucking real.
anyway one of the vegan recipe accounts i follow just posted like five pistachio-based recipes in a row and it makes me feel some kind of fucking way
it is extremely relevant that pistachios are so easy to acquire here, but acorns, which are an indigenous California food staple crop, are impossible to find even in the best stocked grocery stores, and knowing how to prepare them for consumption is a rarer skill than sourdough starter

wikipedia is a gem
If I’m correct, this is from the article “list of common misconceptions” which happens to be one of my favorite Wikipedia articles
https://xkcd.com/843/
The whole article is a wild ride.
W...was this up for debate?
It's the first Tuesday in February, time to have a click around the Wikipedia list of common misconceptions!
I don't care what your perception of the female body has been warped into by the media and advertising prevalent in culture. eat some goddamn carbs
The amount of people I know IRL and online who skop meals and then feel exhausted and try perk up with nicotine and and an energy drink before ending up so anxious they make themselves sick pisses me off. You need OATS!!!!!!!!
I went to a boarding school in Denmark (efterskole) for two years in the mid 00s, whose entire thing was “healthy eating and exercise leads to a healthy mind leads to the ability to learn and become an enlightened and informed participant of society”. the one thing they kept repeating over and over is “don’t drink your calories it will make you anxious and hungry and if it’s in the form of Coca Cola the caffeine will only exacerbate this”
We would regularly have guest speakers on a variety of topics - an anorexia patient, a person who’d studied abroad in the USA, a person who freestyled their further education (this was about to be abolished so not an option for us, but still an inspiring talk), a person who’d refused their military service and was instead doing community service (and why), and so on and so forth.
At one point we had a guest speaker come talk about it his work with juvenile delinquents.
He was the overseer of a house where these kids (our age! Some younger!) lived - not a prison - and where they would receive schooling to complete their mandatory primary education in a setting where social workers were on hand to assist and basically the whole point was to nurture the kids in an attempt to prevent them from choosing a life of crime and/or become dependent on the welfare system due to inability to work. They had support, teachers, people who believed in them, etc.
And yet these kids were failing. They were unruly, anxious, restless, spent their breaks smoking or going to the corner shop for soft drinks or snacks and were too wired to settle down at night to sleep so would often wind up sneaking out and causing trouble - even if the trouble was only some half asses graffiti on a bus stop .and in the morning they would be too exhausted to get up and would take half a day - until lunch, when they would be going on their corner shop lunch break - to wake up.
The problem was: these kids weren’t eating proper food. They were subsisting on nicotine, sugary snacks, and Coca Cola. So this guy, who’d heard of our school, got in touch and requested meal plans and then introduced mandatory breakfast and lunch, with dinner still optional, all following our school’s carefully designed meal plans (vegetable frontloaded with only 100g meat per person, one vegetarian day, one fish day, all bread made with whole meal flour. And since this was Denmark, dinner was a “cold table” i.e. rye bread with various topping choices, salads, and any lunch leftovers reheated as a side). And he made it mandatory for all the staff too, and assigned seating groups with a staff member (we had this at our school too), so that each meal resembled a family meal.
And suddenly these kids were having complete breakfasts with oatmeal porridge and yogurt and toast and some fruit and milk and orange juice, which gave them a solid source of energy to start the day, and they had a hot meal for lunch, and after a about a week of this dinner attendance skyrocketed. The kids weren’t restless and anxious anymore. Most of them voluntarily quit smoking and most of them stopped getting a soft drink from the corner shop too - they weren’t hungry anymore, so the sugary craving went away. These kids, just because they were getting three solid meals every day, flourished. They could concentrate in class. They were awake in the morning. They didn’t stay up late wired and restless. They all graduated and went back home and didn’t see the inside of any system, welfare or criminal, again. These kids didn’t want to be troublemakers - they just (for whatever reason) didn’t have the foundation they needed to succeed and that foundation, it turned out, was proper nutrition.
Really, truly, please do not underestimate eating. Don’t skip your meals. Take care of yourself.
