We made one of these posts a while ago, but I wanted to update it again! With every costume I learn more, and looking back on my old costumes I can actually see how far I’ve come.
It makes me want to keep going and keep getting better! This just shows that anyone can cosplay; all it takes is some dedication.

SDFGHJK OK SO. I was doing some research on like asking cosplayers for pictures, and sadly a lot of what came up were stories about cosplayers not being treated respectfully at conventions! which made me sad! so. HERE!… are just some helpful tips i think are worth sharing when it comes to asking cosplayers for pics! give love to all cosplayers!!! let them know how much you appreciate what they do!! 💖💖💖

I just watched The Conjuring 2, and while it’s on my mind in a similar vein to this post, I also want to spread some appreciation for Javier Botet because GOD DAMN LOOK AT THIS SHIT
He has Marfan Syndrome, which is a rare connective tissue condition that gives him bizarrely elongated limbs and allows him to do unnatural things with his body, and he’s built quite a resume for himself appearing in horror movies
Like Doug Jones, he also appeared as three of the ghosts in Crimson Peak:

I’m concerned that Spiderverse is going to send a generation of future cosplayers the wrong message
namely that it’s possible to spray paint cloth a different color
PSA you cannot spray paint anything that will bend, it will all turn to flakes and fall off. That goes for rubber boots, leather boots, foam, pretty much anything that flexes. You gotta use fabric spray paint for fabric, leather paint for leather, etc.
Honestly I think that was the only criticism I had of that movie upon finishing it.
also please don’t use spray paint on a fucking MASK that you are going to be breathing out of.
Saw these folks at Otakon today. In November (I think) they are planning to live in this van, er, evacuation shuttle for a year and drive it around the country. They are called Expedition Cosplay and you can find them on Facebook, Instagram, and (I think) Youtube.

Fallout 4 Vault Suit (RCCC 2018)
This cosplay was a labor of love. I’ve wanted to make a vault suit for a while, but didn’t have the time and materials to make it happen until this year. It was originally slated for ECCC, but I wanted to do it right and not rush it, so I pushed it back for Pax West and then as it wasn’t quite ready, finally for Rose City Comic Con. The pattern is started from Yaya Han’s bodysuit pattern (McCall’s 7212) and then modified to be screen accurate to Fallout 4′s suit. I also referenced Brazen & Bold’s tutorial to make sure I was on the right track . FYI - their tutorial is super handy and definitely worth checking out if you want to make your own vault suit.
I can’t wait to do a proper shoot and a pinup shoot for this cosplay. I definitely plan on keeping this cosplay around for a long time. You never know when the world is gonna end, so I might as well be prepared. ;)

You also gotta know that if you’re going somewhere where there will be children and you’re in a costume even slightly similar to a Disney character they will think you are that character.
My hair is dyed white and at last year’s Ren Fest I was dressed as a water nymph. So i was in all blue, with glittery blue heeled boots on. Personally, I would have never thought that I looked like Elsa. I had leggings on, not a dress. And no ice themed anything. But that didn’t stop the sweetest little princess from asking me if I was Elsa.
I’ll admit that I was thrown for a loop, since I thought I was a pretty convincing mermaid on land with my scale print leggings. But I’m not a dick so I quickly recovered and said I was her cousin. Kids are more than happy to accept that and she smiled then shyly ran back to her mom to tell her she met Elsa’s cousin.
If you’re in a glittery costume of any sort, in a place where children will be, be prepared to be nice to them. Otherwise you’re just a jerk. No one likes jerks.
Don’t be a dick.
Seriously. If I go anywhere in ANY costume, no matter if I’m a princess, hero, or villain, I’m nice to the kids. They just wanna play!
I don’t even like kids, but one of the most rewarding cosplay moments I’ve had was interacting with littluns as Rose Quartz. Every kid got a hug if their parents said it was okay. Every kid got told that they were very special because they’re a human being. I’m looking forward to doing it again this year, because giving a kid a moment of genuine magic really is something else. It doesn’t hurt you to smile at a child.
When I cosplay Pearl I have precious little ones come up to me and you better bet I goof with them about how gross eating is or how loud amethyst is (and pretend to get a sooooo offended when they say someone else is their favorite gem)
You are making magic real for those kids in that moment and if you aren’t prepared for that, maybe think twice before cosplaying that character. I had a child completely frozen in disbelief and joy over seeing me, a character from a show they love, that’s power you have to wield responsibly.
It’s not just with popular lady characters. My best little-kid-cosplay-moment was when I was cosplaying Thor (not lady Thor from the comics, my own version of genderbent MCU Thor). I was walking through the dealer’s hall and suddenly saw a gaggle of Tiny Avengers in those Walmart costumes barrelling towards me. They crowded me in excitement and asked where Loki was because they wanted to find him and beat him up (I told them to give him an extra punch from me when they found him), then all six tried to crawl into my lap when I said yes to a photo. Cutest thing ever. BE NICE TO KIDS WHEN YOU’RE IN COSTUME.
//If you’re going to be cosplaying -any- character that children will recognize, BE NICE TO KIDS!! To them, you -are- that character. And you have no right, what so ever, to destroy the illusion of what, to them, is a magical moment.
When I cosplay Batman, to little kids, I am Batman. And it is such an amazing experience to have kids run up to me and want a hug, and tell me about how when they grow up they want to fight bad guys too. I can’t fathom someone being so rude as to ignore them.
I have a friend who cosplays Han Solo, and a little girl was so excited to see him that when he knelt down to talk to her, she hugged onto him and didn’t want to let go for ten minutes.
Also, remember IF THERE IS A LOST CHILD AT A CONVENTION, AND YOU ARE COSPLAYING A PRINCESS OR A SUPER HERO, THE CHILD WILL GO TO YOU FOR HELP LONG BEFORE THEY THINK TO APPROACH A SECURITY OFFICER!!! You have a duty to help that child! Help them calm down, escort them to the nearest safe zone, and inform a security officer that the child has misplaced their parents/guardians. -Never- use the term ‘lost child’ in front of the kid, it’s the parents who wandered off and got lost, not the child.
Read this, then read it again.
this is why, no matter who I cosplay, I’m in character to everyone I’ll meet, whether they’re adults, kids, or teens like me. super important, honestly
PSA From a convention parent to everyone going to a convention!
(Edited to add a cut because I didn’t know how to do the thing before but I have figured it out :D ) If you are planning on going to a convention please take a seat and listen to my TED talk which comes from 14+ years of experience which I strongly urge you to write down or print out for further reference:
Do’s:
STAY HYDRATED! You WILL be doing alot of walking and running around during this event, HOURS OF WALKING AROUND ALL DAY , seriously you about to get a work out so bring enough bottled water last the entirety of the convention. I recommend carrying atlest 3 EACH DAY
DON’T FORGET TO EAT! Bring snacks like granola; trail mix, nutrition bars, etc. Also some sweets for bonus energy but seriously don’t go yolo and just eat junk food. Also make sure you have enough for entirely of event.
PACK A REPAIR KIT! Cons are hard on costumes and props and nothing’s worse then clothing tearing; your prop getting messed up etc, trust me. Here’s a basic idea of what should be in this kit:
• hot glue gun & glue sticks.
•needle and thread.
• duct tape!!!
•extra makeup if your using it *keep this in a Ziploc bag in case of spills!!!*
•sponges/ brushes for said make up.
•spirit gum if you’ve got prosthetics *also put in Ziploc!!*
•safety pins.
•stain remover like tide to- go especially if you wearing white.
