I just watched May (2002) and it instantly won it's place on my Letterboxd top 4. I'd go as far as to say that this is THE weird girl movie,or at the very least a staple for the genre. The ending was perfect and the atmosphere was even better,I don't know if this was just me but you could literally smell some scenes. Another slightly concerning thing to say is that May made me feel seen,her and Carrie White are the perfect representations of weird and socially awkward girls. Don't get me started on Adam though,that man did nothing but show up,flaunt his hands,and be a poser. "You like weird" "Not this weird," was such a real thing it was almost off putting.When I first started this movie I was so sure that she and Adam would get a happy ending,a story about to freaks finding eachother,and the fact we got the complete opposite just gave the film a much higher rating in my mind. He's one of the most realistic characters when it comes to people's real thoughts about "weird" people.No matter how much everyone claims to like them,there's always,ALWAYS, a breaking point where they realize that we actually ARE weird. Another thing is how this is all linked to her childhood,which okay isn't exactly a big thing since most characters always have some troubles childhood,but the thing with May's is the fact that she had arguably really good parents,she just couldn't make any friends.Why I'm mentioning this is because so many people underestimate the effect of having no friends on why so many "weird" people act the way they do. The imaginary friend/doll was even better because there were so supernatural elements involved,it was all May's loneliness taking the form of the doll. "No one really wants to be alone." Another quote from the movie that stuck with me.At first glance it's nothing special or poetic,but the simplicity of it contributes to how realistic this movie really is,murder aside. May's loneliness was in no way romanticized nor was it for aesthetic purposes like some films I've watched like "Thirteen." Now I'm in no way hating on Thirteen and I'm aware that these two films aren't really alike,but I'm just talking about the realism in some films regarding loneliness and mental illness. May's solitary life is interrupted by her fixation on Adam's perfect hands,leading her to finally put herself out there a little,and it works for a while,until inevitably,the guy who likes weird gets weirded out. Adam's performative acceptance and love of all things weird is linked to why most films aren't as realistic when it comes to the topic.Weird people in films are always just slightly awkward or silent and always manage to find their people,their happy ending. This doesn't happen in May,and I love it. To end this kind of useless rant,May is the best representation of a weird girl and weird girl movie and if you want a real and raw display of "creepy" this is the movie for you.
