“—Which is why epigenetic regulation in cancer is an important topic to discuss. For example, how—”
A bang past the doors to the lecture hall distracts you from your sentence. In the small pane glass of the door, a familiar silhouette of black hair is hopping around, and grabbing at the foot that was just stubbed.
You swear in your head. He really couldn’t have any worse timing, truly.
“Miss?”
“Huh?” You tuck your lips into your mouth, tightly smiling.
Professor Mitchell looks up from his clipboard and glasses, face impatient. “Continue, if you’d please.”
“Yes, sorry!” You clear your throat. “So like I said, how DNA methylation and histone modifications drive tumorigenesis. It focuses on molecular changes and their functional consequences—”
You really cannot focus. Maki is outrageously smiling from the window, waving and enthusiastically throwing a thumbs up.
“Miss.”
You had stopped talking again. Your face is on fire in embarrassment.
“I apologize. That’s— That’s the end of the presentation. And that’s my proposal, professor, apologies.”
Professor Mitchell sits back in his seat in the front row, giving a heavy sigh and a nod. Your anxiety is through the roof, waiting for his response. The old man let his words sit heavy on his tongue for several seconds.
“Well… besides the disappointing ending, I believe your topic to be a strong one. I look forward to your research and final presentation at the end of the semester. Next!”
You breathe out, feeling like a deflated air balloon at last. You quickly shuffle your papers together, unplugging your laptop from the large projection, hurrying off the stage for the next poor student to present. A phone alarm echoes out into the large space instead, and you can feel the overwhelming relief amongst your peers.
“Sorry about that, everyone. Looks like next Wednesday, we’ll have to continue proposals then. Have a good day.” Professor rises from his seat, waving a dismissive hand once.
You blink rapidly, still trying to adjust your heartbeat back to normal from nerves. The rumble of students climbing out of their uncomfortable, wooden seats surround you. The all-too thumping steps of Maki takes you out of your reverie quickly enough. You whip around to face him, seething.
“Maki Wilhelm Maus, what is wrong with you?!”
“Okay, wait. Let me explain, you don’t have to use the full name.” Maki slows to a stop reaching the third row to the front, hurriedly hiding something behind his back.
You only glare, sending a dead-stare look to him before strongly snatching your book bag and walking away.
“YN, wait!” Maki calls out, whispering an apology around when multiple people look over to you both.
He follows in your footsteps fast, but not before adjusting the flowers in his hold and tucking away your desk for you.
“I’m sorry for distracting you! I thought I was going to be late to see you out of class! But… then, I was actually early,” Maki winces, smoothly sliding the book bag off your shoulder onto his.
You’re still silent and he can’t read your expression clearly so he continues rambling.
“Really! I stubbed my toe against the door and then saw how good you were doing up there on stage. Sounding all professional and serious. It was really cool!”
The compliment earns him a small smirk. Score.
Maki lightens up, the corner of his mouth tilting while nudging you in the shoulder.
“C’mon. You worked so hard on that presentation. You should be proud of yourself!”
You finally peek over to Maki, glowing after doing well. The butterflies in your stomach flutter a little. You scoff before decidingly looking away, walking faster.
“Whatever, thanks.”
“It’s not whatever, let’s go celebrate! Stop studying every five minutes. We can eat something better than whatever you have in the library.”
You snort, before tugging at the book bag he was carrying for you. “That reminds me, give me my bag. I have like, month-old granola bars in there I need to toss.”
Maki jerks back, shooting you an odd look. “What is wrong with you? A month old? Those are still good! Let me have them.”
You only take a deep breath, dropping your hands back to your side. “You are truly built differently, you dumpster.”
“Yup,” Maki tilts his chin up playfully, before patting his stomach. “The digestive system of an incinerator, as you often say.”
He squints, leaning into your face without consideration of your fragile heart.
“Let’s get congratulatory fried chicken. On me.”
You squint back, an inevitable smile eventually growing on your face. “Fine. But I choose the spot. You have awful taste.”
Maki pulls back, dejected. “It was one bad call of a restaurant. God forbid a guy try something new.”
“I almost got food poisoning from that last place, you know?”
“Hush, lady.”
You finally notice the bouquet resting in Maki’s hand, eyebrows pulling together.
“What is that?”
“What?” Maki asks, following your eyeline and exclaiming— he had forgotten himself. “These?”
He brings them up, holding them in front of himself and slowing them to a stop in the middle of the campus quad.
“Yeah…?” You tilt your head, peeking up at Maki’s expression.
You’re bewildered somehow. Maki scoffs, looking off to the side in exasperation.
“Why are you so surprised I would do something like this? Had I not confessed to you like, a week ago?”
You flail your arms, gripping onto Maki’s bicep in urgency. “Shush, you numb nut! There’s so many people here!”
“So what?” Maki shrugs, giving his signature up-to-no-good grin before getting down on one knee.
His head drops, before both hands wrap around the bouquet and he thrusts them forward into your face. Multiple petals fall off and float to the ground and you’re mortified at all the eyes on the two of you.
“YN LN. Will you do me the honor of being my girlfriend?”
“Maki. Get. Up,” You grab at the tag of Maki’s shirt, feeling like a claw machine trying to pick up a 176-pound man. “I am going to murder you.”
A guy riding a bike whizzes by, at the last-minute swerving to avoid hitting someone walking while trying to listen in. You tightly smile at him, trying to wave him off.
“Only if you say yes.” Maki mutters to the ground with a smile.
“Yes! Yes, you know I like you! Now stand up!” You press past your teeth.
The tall freak finally stands up, brushing off dirt from his knees. You numbly tuck the bouquet into your elbow, face blank as you both continue walking.
Maki wraps a warm arm around you, the most happy, shit-eating grin sported on his face. Despite the absolute embarrassing moment that just occurred, your heart is beating in happiness.
You would never admit it aloud though.
“You’re evil. I don’t like you.”
Maki only continues to smile, used to his now-girlfriend’s antics.
“You sure you don’t secretly like me?”
“No, I genuinely don’t like you.” You try to add bite to your words.
