Some pictures of my crabapple putting out flowers.

Really surprised that it is putting out flowers, this is the first year I’ve had it, and I had to defoliated and hit it with fungicide so I had assumed it was just going to “make it” through the rest of the year.

Flowers means fruits, right? I could have apples all over this guy soon!

Texas Renaissance Festival- weekend of 11/17/18

Okay, this is my fifth time trying to type this post out. Tumblr mobile keeps eating it so I moved the pictures to my desktop (which I literally just got up and running) so I could try to make this megapost happen.

We’re going back to TRF on the weekend of the 17th and I finally got some garb to go with the crappy leather armor I put together a few years ago.

Thai fisherman’s pants can be bought on amazon for like ten bucks and they’re perfect. The tunic was like…$18? It’s a tad short on the length and 2x is the largest size made so it’ll have to do. I can wear my pants at my actual waist and tuck them into my boots.

When I put this outfit together a few years ago I attempted to make a cosplay great club out of a dowel rod and some of that insulation foam. It….didn’t work out anywhere near as well as I would have liked so I trashed it. The….batlle skirt? posted below….I like it, but the back is alternating strips of red and black leather kind of like a gladiator’s outift and I’m now in love with it. I have some smaller sheets of chainmail a friend gave me forever ago that I’m thinking I might cut up and hang down on top of some of the leather; give it more of a “I pulled most of this off a dead guy and threw it together.” look.

I’d like to finish this costume out with a tetsubo/kabano like the Shugoki guy in “For Honor”…

…but I’ll either have to break down and make one (read:find a friend with a woodshop) orrrrrrrr…..I found a video online of a guy making one and he used these hammer drive screws as the rivets on the bashing end of the club and I already have the cudgel….so I might just hammer a bunch of metal heads into the cudgel. Just to give it a “nice armor, let me crumple it.” feel.

The last thing I had planned might get put on hold. I had set up to go to a friend’s shop last night but my daughter is sick and I opted to stay home and give the wife a break instead of the former. I’m going to attempt to make a Hank drum to have around the campfire and make everything feel more caravan-y. Basically, its a propane tank that you chop up, cut a bunch of tongues into one side (and then tune them for god knows how long) and then weld the two ends of the tank back together to make a UFO looking drum.

I have a week to get back out to his shop and It’s on my way home from work, I just have to make sure I can get it done. I might have access to all the tools to do the cutting and tuning etc and then just run by his place next week so he can teach me how to weld it back together. I’m pretty sure I’m going to try and tune it to a C# Celtic Minor scale. (see below, this one’s in D but the same scale)

Will keep the blog updated if I end up making the drum this week. If you happen to see this and have any pointers on the drum making process, I’m all ears.

I lied.

Anyway, on the way home I was telling my dad that the only reason I really went was to try and swap for adenium.

We get back to my parents’ house and my mom says “hey if you ever find any desert rose, let me know, I’ve been looking for one for forever”

No shit!

I’m laying in bed that night and I accidentally swipe over to Facebook marketplace and what do you know, someone is selling some right around the corner.

I call Mom up and she basically says “TELL HER I WANT ALL OF THEM”.

So they picked them up and I got to claim a few.

I initially brought home this chubby boy but then I felt bad and brought it back to them and took some more of the smaller ones instead. I don’t think she gives a shit about any of them except the big one.

So now I’m growing succulents? Will definitely need some adenium pointers if you got em.

Went to a plant swap this morning

(well yesterday morning technically)

It was...just ok. Didn't know what to expect, thought it was going to be more "everyone brings extras and just give stuff away" and that was definitely part of it but most of the plants were things I had no interest in.

Cana lilies, ginger, bunch of succulents, datura etc.

Dad was able to trade some hibiscus and got one called "October rose" that looked nice.

Was REALLY hoping to be able to pick up an adenium but no such luck.

I came home with a tiny crown of thorns, a rainbow elephant bush (tiny cutting), a decently well rooted gardenia, and two acacia tree starts. Grabbed some ghost pepper seeds too because why not.

Some possible bonsai material, just not any time soon. Will post pictures tomorrow.

Also if you have a cool adenium up for trade hit me up.

And the Asian dude in the pink pastel shirt that said "plant daddy"- digging that aesthetic.

Crabapple is infected with something.

I think it's apple rust, not sure. Took off all the leaves that had spots on them and treated it.

Someone said it never really goes away, just gets managed.
