I’m gonna say it: manhua Hua Cheng hits different
"'Til the heavens burst and the words don't rhyme"
Strawpage sketch prompt: Hua Cheng grinning with Eming in his hand and using the blood rain technique.
“Even though your palaces and temples are burned down…don’t be sad. I will build you many more temples in the future—bigger, more magnificent, better than anyone else’s. No one will be able to compete with you. I’ll do it!”
-Chapter 40
The flashbacks break my heart but it is sooo satisfying that after the scene where honghonger declares this, next it's the chapter of the mid-autumn festival where Hua Cheng raises three thousand lanterns for Xie Lian, making him surpass all the other gods combined and then some. The pay-off is ufff 🤌🏻
HAPPY 5TH ANNIVERSARY TO TGCF DONGHUA!!!!!
The more I think about Hua Cheng and He Xuan's very different reactions to Xie Lian's canonically terrible cooking, the funnier it gets.
Like, these two are both Supremes, they're on a similar power level, that's clearly not the issue here. He Xuan is constantly ravenous and eats other ghosts for fun. Man can clear out a full kitchen in seconds.
And yet he gets fucking bodied by Xie Lian's weird stew, whilst Hua Cheng's like, "9/10, needs a little more salt". Like, even if you think he's just pushing through his disgust because "UwU gege made it", the fact that he can keep a straight face while doing so is proof that Hua Cheng is just Built Different™.
If princelian's kindness was because of privilege then he would've stopped being kind once he was thrown into poverty. Instead we see a scene of him using the meager money he had to buy lanterns and free ghost fires, even if it would make his life difficult. We see also forfeiting a bet with the other buskers so the other man wouldn't hurt himself trying to win, even if that cost them the spot. This is because he's a good person. His ideals only wavered specifically after being horrifically tortured by Bai Wuxiang in a way that targeted his philosophy and even after that terror he still stood true to himself in the end.
Hualian IS a healthy relationship. Saying it isn't because Xie Lian is Hua Cheng's god, ignores that the reasons why a god/worshipper relationship would be unhealthy do not apply to this couple.
There's no big gap in experience/knowledge. They're both immortal, only with a 7 years difference. After centuries alive, a less than a decade age gap is practically the same age. They're both smart and well travelled.
There's no difference in power. Hua Cheng is also a god in all but name. In fact, Hua Cheng would be the only person Xie Lian has known besides the heavenly emperor who can actually measure up to him in strength and power.
Hua Cheng does not put Xie Lian on a pedestal (in the negative sense of the phrase) He deeply admires him, but he does not have unrealistic/self-centered expectations about what Xie Lian can do for him. The story separates him from those who did this because the latter condemned and abandoned Xie Lian once he didn't fit the image of him they created.
Honghonger was shown praying at Xie Lian's shrine standing up, unlike the other devotees who did it kneeling ignoring Xie Lian's actual wishes. This is because from the start Hua Cheng cared about him as a person. He knew who Xie Lian was and what he stood for. He's his god because he loves him.
Thank you everyone who helped me out yesterday by tossing some coins my way! Please take this art with Dianxia as a gratitude :) (btw, this is one of the CGs from my tgcf fan visual novel)

the beauty of the tgcf hard cover collection is genuinely unmatched. like i love books and have a decent selection but those beauties truly outdo themselves. i typically only thrift books bc i’m completely broke but $200 was the least i would pay. atp i don’t even need to read them, just looking is enough lol
like you’re kidding
