The official Les Mis social media just made another big silly mistake!The account posted that  the line “Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise” was written by Victor Hugo. It was not. It was written by Herbert Kretzmer for the musical adaptation only. I think it’s wrong to pretend that Victor Hugo said things he didn’t actually say--- and I also think it’s wrong to erase the contribution of Herbert Kretzmer, who deserves to get credit for the lyrics he wrote even though his name isn't as famous. Especially when you know, you’re still making money off the lyrics he wrote. 

But maybe I’m wrong. Maybe if you put things in fancy font on a dramatic background, it must be true!

With that in mind, here’s my favorite Victor Hugo quote.

What I think makes the whole "Even the darkest night will end and the sun will rise is NOT by Victor Hugo" thing even funnier is that the ACTUAL let's-call-it-Epilogue ends with:

"Comme la nuit se fait lorsque le jour s'en va."

Or

"As the night comes when the day is gone."

And before people come for me again yes yes Words Have Meanings and shit like that but when you JUST look at the words written it's the complete opposite and I think that's funny

Bringing this back in memory of Herbert Kretzmer, who died today. These words are beautiful and they deserve to be remembered as his.

Nope, it’s a musical-only line!  It’s a wonderful line, and well in keeping with the story, but it’s not a Hugo quote!

Probably the closest line from the novel is from the letter Marius leaves for Cosette  (in the Heart Under a Stone chapter): “God is behind everything, but everything hides God.  Things are black, creatures are opaque. To love a human being renders them transparent.”  (..translated, obviously:P)

That’s at least in the same general line of sentiment ,but it’s not That Line--lyricist Herbert Kretzmer deserves full credit for the line!
