April 10th, 1912 - Southampton, England
On this day, RMS Titanic, White Star Line’s newest leviathan, departed from Southampton at noon. There were nine-hundred and twenty-two passengers aboard. A few minutes later, the Titanic nearly got into a collision with the SS City of New York, which was luckily avoided. Four hours later, she arrived in Cherbourg, France and picked up an additional two-hundred and seventy-four passengers while twenty-four disembarked.

btw, this is how the southeastern part of lake superior looks on wplace right now:
half a dozen memorials for the edmund fitzgerald, a freighter that sank nearly 50 years ago (the anniversary will be nov 10) and was immortalized in the gordon lightfoot song. people are writing out the lyrics and one person planned out an absolutely massive mural, based on this image (this is what comes up when you scan the QR code in the 4th & 5th pics):
on wplace you can select individual pixels to see who placed them. there's a bunch of different accounts contributing to all this. at least a few dozen people between all the lyrics & drawings. more people than were on the ship when it sank
idk man maybe it's just me but im getting kind of emotional over this pixel art website

“How do we know X about the Titanic-“
It’s Olympic, guys. The answer is pretty much always Olympic. No, they weren’t identical, and if you know what to look for they’re pretty easy to tell apart, but they were functionally similar enough that it’s like comparing two cars of the same make and model, except one has tinted windows and better tires.

Thought I would give the Great Lakes steamers some love, so here is the SS Keewatin, a Canadian Great Lakes steamer that operated largely in Lake Superior. She was built in 1907 for Canadian Pacific and remained in service until the mid-1960s. She was also used as a set in various films/documentaries about the Titanic, Lusitania, and Yarmouth Castle.
