Contronyms, or Janus words, are words that are their own opposites. An example of this is ‘Overlook’ as in to watch over or to fail to notice.

Now in most interpretations of this type of universe there are translators. Translators wouldn’t have the context necessary to know what meaning is being used if they aren’t very advanced. Maybe they will just use the most common meaning.

Contronyms could cause hilarious mix ups with translators, translating both to and from our language and the aliens language.

If you knock out a tooth there’s a chance reinsert the tooth back into its spot. If you handle the tooth correctly (and in a timely manner) you can just put it back in it’s socket to reattach it. You need to call your dentist after but teeth can often be saved if they’ve fallen/been knocked out. Because teeth are part of out skeletal system, although not classified as bone, it’s quite odd that we can just,,, reattach a tooth.

You know how humans feel when they are being stared at? What if extraterrestrials didn’t have gaze detection like we do?

I think that if it was true they would find it weird that we could “feel” eyes on us. That we know when something is watching us.

Percussive maintenance, sometimes you just hit stuff and it works again. The official reason as to why this works sometimes is the fact that Vibrations from the hit will knock gears into place and the device will work as before. It works for electronic devices as well, especially old ones. Older electronic devices still have some mechanical components, mostly switches. Things heat up, cool down, sometimes shake and things become misaligned. It probably wouldn’t work with the ultra futuristic tech by the time we meet other life forms but it might

The astronauts during Apollo 12 actually used this technique to fix the cameras that broke!

However there is always a risk that it will knock things more out of place though, so keep that in mind

But imagine a futuristic piece of tech not working and the human just gives it a few rapa-tap-taps and it starts working again, no official maintenance required

I think aliens would find it wild that we, as predators, would find the traits of other predators cute, and prey scary. Even with specific instances, a predators teeth may be cute and a prey animals teeth scary

Cats toe beans are a great example, they are great for stealth to sneak up on prey, practically a sign on a predator. Even sharp teeth, I’ve seen people be like, ‘look at those bitey little teefies on these little guys’ while talking about lions and panthers.

On the other hand,,,hippos are scary, kind of due to their size but also their aggression and teeth, they are one of the deadliest land animals for a reason

Rabbits are seen generally as cute, as seen by how popular they are as a pet, but try and tell me they aren’t at least a little scary. Again specifically their teeth

This isn’t always the case but even these few things would probably be weird to other sentient alien species, even if we are the top of the food chain

Did you know that hiccups are the default for the human brain and that there is something telling our brain ‘no’ for the most part? Like, people have damaged that specific part of their brain before and had hiccups for YEARS

Did you know that Earth is the only planet observed to have tectonic plates? That means earthquakes caused by plate tectonics are seemingly unique to our own planet.

If we do find aliens they would likely live on a planet without tectonic plates and I think that they would find that the ground we stand on is constantly shifting beneath us and will cause volcanoes and earthquakes quite scary

What about a person with insomnia.

They can never sleep during their normal sleep cycle, instead trying to sleep for four hours, then fall asleep and wake up at the scheduled time. During the day they take unscheduled naps or resting their eyes period in the weirdest places. So, trying to be productive they start working for those extra awake hours. Then their schedule for sleep as all sorts of fucked up and they don’t care because they are getting some work done but it’s being done horribly because they are sleeping a max of four hours a day

And they are trying to force themselves to sleep but they can’t and they stay awake for four whole days and the lack of sleep is starting to get to them until they finally get to sleep and do so for like 12 hours straight. And the aliens are worried because the human hasn’t been ‘normal’ recently

What if aliens learned that some humans didn’t have one of their organs. Like, appendicitis. I don’t have an appendix and I can live life totally normal, it might be harder to bounce back from dysentery but other than that everything still works the same.

I’m just imagining a group of humans talking about scars and one person talks about how they had an organ removed and the aliens are horrified because all of their organs are vital to them so the idea of not having one is terrifying. And as far as they know all organs of almost all species are required for healthy survival so they are now suddenly very worried for the one specific human.

What about a concept of a human just,,, standing up and staying there for a few seconds and they groan because they have spots in their vision after standing up because they have a vitamin deficiency or something. That or some other symptoms of vitamin deficiencies and a space crew of aliens gets used to these reactions and accommodations so when another human joins the crew they are like, ‘okay, different accommodations and stuff for different humans’ and then more join and only the first human does this so then they are like ‘wait, this /isn’t/ normal for humans? Is something wrong’ and the first human learns they have been deficient in so many vitamins their whole life it’s not even funny.
