A Professor of Ethics' view on socialism in 1911.
"Socialism Not A Remedy Of Evils"
A Professor of Ethics' view on socialism in 1911.
Socialism has its roots in ancient times, with collective agriculture and communal living being practiced in many societies. However, the modern concept of socialism as we know it today emerged in the 18th and 19th centuries in Europe. The Socialist Party of America was founded in the United States in 1901, marking the emergence of socialism as a significant political movement in the country. The following critique here of socialism comes 10 years afterwards, and was published in The Irish Standard on May 27, 1911.

"The Moving Picture Album," by Robert E. Sherwood.
Walt Disney created his first Mickey Mouse cartoon in 1928 with “Steamboat Willie.” In the following year, Disney introduced his Silly Symphonies series with “The Skeleton Dance.”
By 1930, Disney’s animated shorts were popular and successful. Robert E. Sherwood, the American playwright and screenwriter, published a review of Disney’s work in the Evening Star, from a column entitled, “The Moving Picture Album.”

"A Strange Ghost Story."
Reported ghost story at the St. Vincent Archabbey in the mid-19th century.
It is said that there are no specific ghost stories directly attributed to St. Vincent Archabbey, but this article published by the Holmes County Republican on March 15, 1860, tells a different story.

From Gun to Pulpit
Alex Adair, former member of the infamous James-Younger Gang.
The James-Younger Gang was a group of American outlaws that operated in the late 19th century, primarily in the states of Missouri, Kansas, and Minnesota. The gang’s roots can be traced back to the American Civil War, when the James and Younger brothers fought as Confederate guerrillas in Missouri. After the war, they turned to a life of crime, robbing banks, trains, and stagecoaches. The gang’s activities were marked by violence, brutality, and notoriety, earning them a reputation as one of the most feared and infamous outlaw groups in the United States.

Burn Wars: An Obi-Wan Kenobi Story
A Jedi recently disavowed by the new Empire uses his special Jedi training to help others in trouble.
Obi-Wan Kenobi, a seasoned Jedi Master, is suddenly “burned”, i.e. Order 66’ed, without any form of procedure. He survives by doing impossible jobs for desperate people on Tatooine, where Luke Skywalker lives; the son of Anakin Skywalker, who Obi-Wan has vowed to protect and watch over, and hopes to one day train to be a Jedi. This desert wizard is aided by an ex-bounty hunter and trusted former Republic informer, Sol.
This is the direction that I would have taken the Kenobi series. Read my fan take on my Substack article.

Save Ferris is an American ska-punk band formed in Orange County, California, circa 1995. Their name is a reference to the 1986 film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The band is led by the inimitable front-woman Monique Powell, known for her high-octane vocals.
Watching 10 Things I Hate About You (1999).
This is a fun high school movie with a good soundtrack. One of my favorite ska bands from the 90s, Save Ferris, performs two songs in the movie, "Can't Stop" and "I Know." I enjoyed Heath Ledger's performance. Have you seen it?
