I was doing some postulating in the Discord some time ago about how curious it is that Theta, the only A.I fragment with the appearance of a child, represents Alpha’s trust and empathy.

I think the reason this particular fragment looks this way is because subconsciously, Church associates traits of empathy or trust with the naivete of a child. Alpha after all, trusted the Director and he abused him at his most vulnerable. He cared for Tex and it was used against him to torture him.

Church is not very emotionally mature lol. As evidenced by many instances in the show. In these areas, especially. Maybe because at one point he was whole. A new, promising A.I. He was innocent, and then broken. He learned sadness and helplessness. He knew what it meant to feel weak, and small, and scared.

Almost like a child stunted by trauma.

One of my favorite things about Epsilon Church is that he still chooses to carry a sniper rifle when he’s a hologram with no means of actually firing it as a weapon. It must be a strong piece of identity for him that he likes to hold onto. His rifle is like a security blanket.
