PHYSICAL.

HAIR: Deep brown that can be mistaken for black, reaches his mid-neck.  EYES :  Brown FACE :  Square jawed with a large button nose and thick eyebrows.  LIPS :   Usually dry and chapped from worrying between his teeth when nervous, or just a lack of general mindfulness when he’s focusing on fixing something up in the castle.  COMPLEXION :  Dark skin dusted with freckles that are too hard to notice unless you know they’re there, or you’re paying very close attention to his skin.  BLEMISHES :   SCARS : Lots of small nicks on his fingers where his hand has slipped, or he’s put too much strength behind pushing something that won’t budge in machinery so his hand has jolted forward and scrapped against something sharp. FATHER :    Unknown. MOTHER :  Both his mothers are the world to him. His birth mother has a job in business and was constantly flying from Samoa to America to complete business transactions. That’s where she met Hunk’s other mother, a Japanese-American personal trainer. She moved to Samoa because his birth mother had a more stable career, and his birth mother agreed to carry when they decided on having a child. They’re both outgoing and assertive, encouraging their kids to follow their aspirations.  SIBLINGS :  Hunk and his sister look nothing alike, and that’s because their birth mothers were different. They may not be related by blood, but they were a family. Hunk would often do her hair for her before school and make her lunch as their mothers would have to leave home early to go to work. Hunk learned how to drive as soon as he was able so he could drive her to school without worrying about her on the bus. Q1 :   if  you  could  write  your  character  your  way  in  their  own  movie ,   what  would  it  be  called ,  what  style  would  it  be  filmed  in ,  and  what  would  it  be  about ?           A1 :  It’d probably just be called Hunk. Because it’s his nickname and it’d be about him. Possibly like a slice of life, following this little Samoan boy through his life journey to get where he is, in which he would be the main character to maximise emotions and the treatment he deserves side eyes Voltron writers. Could potentially be non-sci-fi and follow him through college in his goal to become an engineer for NASA? Either way, give me a lead that isn’t a straight white middle aged guy. Q2 :   what  would  their  soundtrack / score  sound  like ?           A2 :  Instrumental indie that can lead up to instrumental upbeat, chuck some piano in one song, then throw in some hearty drums and bass.  Q3 :   why  did  you  start  writing  this  character ?           A3 :  I generally like playing sweet characters with sarcasm that might otherwise be seen as a background character. That, or the most annoying little shits that everybody loves to hate and kept around for the drama. Honestly, I don’t minorly like something, I generally fall hard and fast, which is what happened with Voltron. I didn’t know who I wanted to write - it was a toss up between Lance, Pidge, Hunk and I even considered Shay (because I love and cherish her). So when Hunk was open here?? Basically made up my mind for me and I’m so glad I went with him because I adore him. The grumbled reply had Shiro raising one eyebrow ever so slightly. It could be true that people only said the guy was good because he was the only mechanic around, given that mechanics were fairly few and far between, but… He had a hard time really buying that. People were pretty honest about what they thought of others these days, so he’d bet they’d have said something more along the lines of ‘he’s your only shot out here’ rather than saying he was good if that was how they felt.

–But it wasn’t that big of a deal. Not worth dedicating that much thought to.

As Hunk approached, Shiro stayed in place, wanting to continue to hold as non-threatening an appearance as was possible here. He kind of hated how hard it was for him to do that, but he also couldn’t say that having an intimidating appearance hadn’t come in handy in the past. Many a time it had gotten both himself and Keith out of trouble. It just… also made it harder for people to trust him.

The glance at his arm wasn’t missed, nor was the surprise on Hunk’s face, but this was a reaction he was used to by now and thus didn’t bother him all that much. With the chance to focus on the matter at hand though, Shiro took it, glancing back to the speeder behind him with a nod as the mechanic spoke. Naturally, it’d take longer to have Hunk look over the whole thing for anything that needed fixing, and it was almost tempting to let him do just that for the sake of catching absolutely everything that might be out of place so he wouldn’t need another fix for a while, but… Time was definitely a factor here, so that wasn’t an option. 

“Soon as possible.” He answered, sure that this was the response the mechanic was used to getting. Those who travelled around like he and Keith did tended to not stay in one place for too long. “There’s been a time or two where I’ve had some trouble getting it started, and I’ve had it stall on me here and there, too. I’ve been able to get it working with some effort every time so far, but I know that’s not going to last.”

He wasn’t surprised, permanent residents were usually the only people Hunk ever got full jobs from. Everyone else just wanted fast patch ups, and he could comply. But the ruder they were, the higher he charged. He would flat out refuse, but he’d practically be signing their death warrant and he couldn’t begin to think about doing that. 

This sounded like an actual problem. He had stopped around a metre away from the stranger, unable to deny he wasn’t getting any bad vibes from the guy. “I can take a look free of charge, but there may be a possibility that something may need replacing. I don’t have many spare parts for speeders, but I could rig something up that can tie you over until you find the part and another mechanic.” 

He turned around to head up to his work area, gesturing for him to follow. He opened a large metal container by a bench, clipping on his tool belt and pulling out a few simple tools. “I’m going to run a code checker by it first, see if it’s an electrical problem. Once I figure out what it is I can give you a quote and you can choose whether or not to hang around or head back to town.” 

That’s where he got mixed responses, some people got bored and would wander off, others didn’t trust him alone with their vehicles and made it difficult for him to work with constant aggressive questions. He couldn't quite pick what he would prefer, so the get out of jail free card was there in case he'd prefer to grab supplies or a drink while he waited. Whatever people did these days.

Well, that was handy. Not only had he managed to remember the name correctly, but he was talking to the very guy he was looking for. Should save him some time.

Lowering his arm from the gesture of greeting, Shiro halted his own approach, taking note of Hunk’s lack of movement in his direction. Out here these days, it was smart to keep some distance between yourself and strangers–you never knew if you could trust them or not. While he held no ill intentions himself, and from what he’d heard about the mechanic it was unlikely that Hunk did either, Shiro didn’t want to press his luck or freak the guy out.

“Yeah. Some help, if you have the time. I can pay.” He replied, figuring he may as well state that outright. People tended to trust a bit easier if they knew you could pay for their services. Casting a glance back at his speeder, Shiro gestured toward it with his prosthetic arm, gaze finding its way to Hunk again a second later.

“My speeder’s been acting up a bit. Hasn’t broken down fully, but I figured it was better to get it fixed up before that happened,” he explained, offering a slight, almost sheepish smile. That was putting it lightly, considering the vehicle breaking down could strand him in the middle of nowhere, days from a settlement, possibly leaving him to his death. So yeah, better to get it fixed up before that happened.

“I heard about you while I was in the settlement nearby–they said you’re a good mechanic and offer out your services, so…” Trailing off, Shiro shrugged, holding out both arms in a gesture to indicate that was the reason he was currently standing there. “Figured I’d take the detour to see if you can help me out.”

Whatever Hunk had been focusing on didn’t have time to register, the guy was lowering his arm and the movement had him snapping focus back to him. His memory may be photographic, but when he was trying to sense motive, scan the area for anything suspicious, and seem casually wary, it was hard to render a good mental impression when only a small part of your attention was dedicated.

The lack of advancement on the other guy’s behalf did him favours, he picked up on body language, he knew the unspoken social law of the land. This paved the way for a multitude of things, Hunk was left tossing up between feeling more at ease, and even more on guard. On one hand, he could genuinely be a guy looking to fix his speeder, on the other, he could have dubious intentions. Either way, he was likely to be more intelligent than your average wastelander. 

Hunk’s gut told him he was genuine. 

Right. Either way. “They say that because I’m their only mechanic,” he lightly gruffed out, he knew he was good, they didn’t realise how good. The tire he was holding in his other hand got stacked atop the one he’d sat down, dusting his hands of grease (which, really, only smeared it) Hunk leisurely approached him, finally realising what had caught his eye earlier was an impressively intimidating looking prosthetic. His eyebrows shot up momentarily, before he was shifting his line of sight back toward the speeder, eyeing it off. There were a few of them around, he still hadn’t managed to get his hands on one to pull apart, but he knew enough about them from other people that had passed through.

“Talk me through what’s been happening, it’ll give me a place to start. Otherwise I can go over the whole thing, but it’ll be slower.” It was a disclaimer, most folks he knew that passed through generally didn’t want to linger around for too long. Usually gathered trouble after a while, quick in’s and out’s. “How soon are you wanting to head off?”

“Good.” Hooking his finger behind the fabric, Keith tugged his bandana back over the lower half of his face. Not giving more than his concise reply, he waited for the stranger to climb on behind him. The fact he couldn’t feel hands was unsettling, but he didn’t think the guy would STAB him or anything. Not while he was the one guiding the complex, very fast speeder.

STILL…

“You’re gonna want to hold on,” reaching behind himself, he smacked around until he found one of the guy’s wrists, at which point it pulled it forward and put it on a safe spot above his hip. The touch tickled, leaving an unpleasant sensation buzzing under his skin but to ensure hands were kept busy away from KILLING him, it was a small price to pay.

“Ready?” He’d better be, because Keith was already starting up his vehicle, lifting off the ground with only minimal swaying. “Just—tap your fingers if you need me to stop or something.” He’d never given anyone else (besides Shiro) a ride before, so he wasn’t sure how the guy was going to take it - but his transport WAS fast. Surely enough to make someone unused to it a little woozy. In truth, Keith didn’t care if the guy felt sick, but he DID care for repayment, and having been given the water was enough that he felt obligated to make sure the guy got to town mostly-okay. “And give me tugs to guide me.”

With that he was off, twisting back his wrist and pushing down with a foot. The speeder was still for only a second before zooming forward, the wasteland around them blurring as they picked up speed.

Hesitating, Hunk curled his fingers in a loose grip. It hit him that this was real, this guy was real. He hadn’t had any doubts before, but being on your own for a while, only having verbal interactions with others? He used to touch others flippantly, affectionately, platonically. Now the only times he’s touching someone else is to defend himself or to bandage them up, neither had happened for a while. 

Now wasn’t the time. With his free hand, Hunk replaced his goggles and bandana over their respective places on his face. He shifted behind the guy, quickly making sure his gear was safely secured, then gently placing his other hand on the other side of the guy, wordlessly letting him know he wasn’t going to try anything. 

“As I’ll ever be,” he mumbled. Was he ready? Debatable. He loved speeders, he really did, they were fun to study, pick apart, fix up, upgrade. But he never felt secure without the stability that came with the ground. The speeder swayed lightly and Hunk had to actively fight the urge to clench his fingers into this guy, as it was his fingers twitched. “Got it.” He affirmed, not knowing if he was even waiting for a response. 

He wasn’t expecting it. His body lurched backwards, thighs clenching tightly to cling to the speeder, fingers digging in sharply to keep from falling. He immediately felt guilty as he righted himself, softening his hold quickly, scrambling to wrap his forearms around the stranger’s lower torso, gripping at his own arms instead. If he thought he could be heard, he’d yell out an apology, but this would have to do. 

Without realising he had clenched his eyes shut, he wrenched them open to watch overhead, taking deliberate, slow deep breaths; just like riding a motorbike Hunk it’s fine, don’t look down. Particles of dust, sand and rocks caused minor vibrations against his goggles, clothes and tails of his headband whipping around in the wind generated by their speed. After a while, Hunk carefully let go of the deathgrip on his own arm with his right hand and shifted it to the guy’s shirt, tugging right in guidance.

“That’s a definite plus. If there’s one frustrating thing about beaches, it’s never being able to get rid of the sand,” Shiro nodded, perhaps trying to steer things in a lighter direction. He didn’t want to have sunken Hunk’s mood–probably should have been a bit more careful about the way he said things.

As Hunk went on to say that he was glad that they stopped on the planet though, he felt some amount of relief in his chest. People handled homesickness and reminders of the past differently, and it was hard to say with some whether the positive feelings would outweigh the negative. Bittersweet was a good way to put it when it came to the circumstances, and Shiro was about to make a comment, though felt the opportunity was lost as Hunk trailed off and immediately changed topic.

Maybe that was for the best. Focus on their objective and let go of potentially emotional topics.

“Right,” he agreed, making to begin walking again in order to continue their trek, only to be paused as the Yellow Paladin spoke again. Blinking in surprise at the content of the question, Shiro turned to glance back over at Hunk almost owlishly. …Then broke into a reassuring grin, offering a shake of his head.

“No Hunk, I don’t suppose. Dragon eggs seem entirely unlikely, alien planet or not.” There was amusement in his tone of voice, but far from anything mocking. It was much more fond amusement than it was anything else. Only Hunk would worry about dragon eggs on an alien planet. “They grow on trees anyway, right?” That was what he’d gathered from the small bit he’d heard about the fruits, at least. “I don’t think dragon eggs would do that.”

The ghost of a smile lingered faintly at his comment, memories of dragging sand around the house, his mother complaining to his mom about leaving her wetsuit laying around because somehow sand always wound up in their bed, head resting on folded arms after late night study sessions with tiny granules falling from shaggy beach hair. This place was good, he hoped it made everyone else feel warm and comforted.

But sorry Shiro, he came out to have a good time and feeling sombre wasn’t high on his list of ways to chill. If Hunk had been looking in the older male’s direction he might have caught onto his body language and picked up on the vibes that would tell him he had just intercepted a thought. If he had noticed, he would have pushed everything aside to make sure he hadn’t just stomped all over letting Shiro speak. But he hadn’t, so whatever it was disappeared.

Perhaps for the best, maybe a lost opportunity. They had a long time to figure things out.

“We didn’t think rocks could talk and we met a whole planet of them,” Hunk pointed out fondly. “Things may seem really similar, but there’s bound to be a few things we think are impossible that turn out to be a reality out here.” 

Bag slung over his shoulder, Hunk started walking again, but moved slowly, twisting his body to wait for the Black Paladin.

“Anywhere.”

A simple answer to the question. Really, Keith had no destination in mind. The goal was to KEEP GOING, stopping only when trouble arose.

…For the next two days, at least. After that, he’d have to back-track and meet up with Shiro at that last settlement, both to seek rewards for jobs done - Shiro with the head of a bandit, and Keith with a lost wedding ring. He COULD go back and wait around, turn in the ring and get the cash, but that would leave him in the same place for longer than he was comfortable with.

With quick reflexes Keith snatched the canteen from the air as it was tossed to him. With it in grasp he twisted off the cap, yanked down the strip of cloth tied around the lower half of his face, and brought the lip of it to his own. Greedily he drank, deep mouthfuls with noisy gulps. Whatever trickled around the corners of his lips he caught with his thumb, pulling the canteen away to suck the excess water from it.

A little shake of his wrist told of water still left, and Keith screwed the cap back on before tossing it back. The speeder was brought to the ground, engine stopped momentarily, and as he put his mask back on he tipped his head in an inviting manner;

“You know the area?” Most people didn’t walk all that far. Anyone planning to go distances usually invested in some kind of vehicle transport. “Could use you to tell me where to go.” He and Shiro had maps, of course - but this was newer territory and he had no clue where the hell any communities might be.

One word that told Hunk a lot. Drifter. No home. Lone wolf type, most likely doesn’t have company. More conclusions kept wracking up as Hunk scanned the guy. Alone, speeders weren’t easy to get, must have earned or stolen it, either one implies he’s dangerous. Stealing meant dishonest, likely to stab you in the back. Earned it implied he did it the best way one could earn money in this world; fighting. 

He grimaced when the guy guzzled it all, that was meant to last another few days, he’d have to find new work as soon as he could to be able to stay alive. The empty canteen was thrown back and he lifted a large hand to catch it with ease, having plenty of time to react as he was already watching him closely. It was safely tucked away.

The hum of the engine stopped, he began to relax. Scavenger was seeming less likely, a dishonest man would have left him as soon as the canteen was empty. Possibly would have signed his death warrant, it would take a few days to walk back to the nearest populated area. Sometimes it terrified him how easily he placed himself in danger to help someone out. He knew of one person that has told him off about it.

“Know this part well enough, know a few hours ride that way like the back of my hand,” he nodded toward the direction he was walking in. He thought about elaborating on why he was out here, but decided that don’t ask don’t tell was a good rule to abide by for now. 

Trusting that the guy needed him, he hauled himself up onto the back of the speeder, looking around for ways to hold on. He really didn’t want to have to cling to this guy, doesn’t matter that he nodded his permission to climb aboard, he didn’t look the hugging type.

Having heard that there was a mechanic living not too far out from the settlement they’d stopped at between jobs to both make some extra cash and pick up supplies, Shiro felt like he’d really lucked out. His knowledge of fixing vehicles was incredibly limited, and his speeder had been sort of on the fritz for a while now. Nothing too bad, he’d been able to keep it working, though it sometimes took a bit more energy than he liked to expend on it, but if there was an opportunity to get it fixed, he was going to take it. Last thing he needed was for it to break down on him completely while out in the middle of nowhere.

He’d told Keith to stay put at the encampment, just pick up the necessities they needed and maybe get some rest, and he’d be back in (hopefully) a couple of hours. He had no idea if this mechanic was any good or not, but it was worth the risk and in the end, did it really matter so long as his speeder got fixed?

Pulling up to what looked to be someone’s home, he had to assume this was it. It was the only building he’d come across since leaving the settlement. Shiro tugged off the mask he wore to protect his face while driving through the wastelands and stuffed it into the satchel at his side, sliding off of his speeder and taking a glance around. Within a few moments, his eyes landed on a figure near the building that he could only guess was used as a makeshift house and, wanting to waste no time, he began a slow approach.

“Excuse me,” he called while still a decent ways off. He knew he could come off as a more imposing figure to most given his size, the scuffed up look that came with living on the go, and the whole metal arm thing, but he did his best to minimize that where he could–here, he offered a wave in the other’s direction. “I’m looking for a… Uh, Hunk, I think it was?”

Sun beating down overhead, two day old layer of grime and grease, sweat accumulating from manual labour. Hunk pulled a face when he caught his appearance in a dirty broken mirror he kept around. It came in handy for trying to fix wounds he couldn’t see on his own. That’s what he was, for the most part. Alone. When this all started, the friends he had scattered to the winds or became infected, the group he started with quickly learned they could push him around. That was before.

Now Hunk had a good thing going on. He had respect and he stayed out of bad news by living on his own a walk-able distance from a settlement (a few hours was walk-able, right?). There were still taverns full of people waving their money around, a few had approached Hunk to see if they could convince him to fight once they noted that his size also included strength. They were turned down, he didn’t want to fight unless he absolutely had to. Instead, his money was made by offering his services as a mechanic. And he was good. 

His hand pulled through greasy hair and he fixed his headband so it was pulling all his hair away from his face. Ignoring his grime as best he could, Hunk got back to work, pulling open the back of his battered SUV and hauling the scavenged tires out with one in each arm. He was walking back to his work area when a call rang out in the silence. Cautiously, Hunk laid one tire at his feet so he could shade his eyes from the sun to better squint out at the figure. It helped that he didn’t feel comfortable not having free hands when dealing with a stranger. 

“That’s me, you need something?” He called back. Usually, he would begin to approach the other person. But he couldn’t see if this person was infected, and it was better to be cautious with people that looked like they could take you in a fight. Because this guy looked it. The key to getting by nowadays was to look intimidating or garner respect. While Hunk wasn’t getting any bad vibes from this guy, he knew it was stupid to completely drop his guard. The sun glinted on something metallic and Hunk’s gaze automatically honed in on it.

“Trust me, she knows. But yeah, whatever, dude. As long as I don’t have to deal with your gross mullet anymore after Halloween.” As they continued to talk Lance had begun to go through their recycling, finding different pieces of cardboard he could use to create his great weapon that would truly be fit for a prince. He hadn’t bothered with a wig or anything, screw the fairy tails with fair haired, blue eyed heroes. He was just as good as any of them.

Shooing away his older sister who was vying for use of the phone, complete with ducking from her outstretched arms to catch him, he booked it with cardboard in hand up to his room. He’s pretty sure Hunk can hear her shouting his name through the phone, but ignores it himself with a snort. Shutting the door behind him, he tossed the materials to the floor in order to move his desk chair in front of the handle. Granted he had effectively also locked his older brother out of the room they shared, but he wasn’t home anyway so Lance wasn’t too concerned.

“Yeah, yeah that’s fine. You’re not bringing the pie to the party are you? It’s going to get wrecked. By me. Before we get there.” Settling on the floor after putting Hunk on speaker phone, he readies himself with cardboard in one hand and scissors in the other. Beginning to cut the shape of his sword out, he hums softly in thought while working.

“I’ll be done by then, definitely. I’m still not going to tell you though, you’re just going to have to wait for me to blow you away with how good I look when you come by.” Slathering glue on both sides of cardboard he stuck them together, immediately sitting on it to get a secure bond between the two materials.

“Hunk, this party is going to be it. Bringin’ my A game, for sure. No ladies left behind, and all that.” Drumming his fingers beside him on the floor, he glances at the clock as he sees his door handle shake, his mothers voice following soon after telling him to open up. “Gotta go, but I’ll see you soon.”

Hanging up, Lance reluctantly spends the next hour working on his sword while being lectured by his sister after she had stormed in when he opened the door. Hearing from his mother was one thing, but to get it from his sister,  well, it just all went over his head anyway. Fortunately, with roasted pumpkin seeds to snack on, the time passed fairly quickly and he came out of it with a pretty damn good cardboard sword.

There was a scoff of indignation at the accusation that he had a mullet. But it still had him doing a double take at the mirror in his room, pulling his headband off from where he was using it to tie his hair back. Fluffing the back of his hair up, and turned his head side to side, trying various angles and blowing his bangs out of his eyes defiantly. 

“’s not a mullet.” Hunk grumbled, pouting at his reflection. Through the phone he could hear distorted loud voices, signalling that Lance was probably busy dodging siblings. Pulling out the chair at his desk, Hunk dropped into it, swinging idly around as he listened to his friend. The corner of his lips curled into a smug smile, letting Lance keep firing away. He’d tell him that the pie wasn’t for him later. 

“Alright, but if you better not ditch me for some girl. I’ll text you when we’re heading over.” Hunk let the call end and tossed his phone over to his bed, wincing when he heard it impact with something that decidedly wasn’t soft. Ehhhh, should be fine. Leaning back against the chair, Hunk glanced up at the ceiling, letting out a long sigh as he carded his fingers through his hair, this was going to be a long hour. 

He didn’t have long to wait before his first alarm sounded, signalling that his phone was fine. He found it, switched the alarm off and moved back into the kitchen to take the pastry out to pour in the puree, then putting it back into the oven for that final hour. He reset the alarm for the correct time, placing the phone on a part of the bench that wasn’t a mess. With one glance around the kitchen, any thoughts of cleaning up went out the window with a big nope. He did, however, put dishes into the sink instead of letting them take up the benches. It was something. 

Right. He had a party to get ready for. 

Forgoing a shower (he had one like, an hour ago, he was fine) Hunk closed his bedroom door behind him and got changed. He pulled on a white tunic, the sleeves flouncing outward, slight ruffles by the chest area and brown pants tucked into a pair of boots; then there was a sash just below his middle, where he could tuck in a fake pistol, and to top it all off, a long cape black with the collar standing rigid. 

Except there was something missing. He began rummaging around his room, checking his usual spots for dropping things without paying too much attention to where he put them, even pulling a few drawers out to briefly go through them.

“Hey, Lei! Have you seen the fangs?” He called out as he poked his head out of his bedroom door, hearing a muffled ‘Nah!’ in the distance. His room got another, more thorough, once-over. Upon not finding the fangs for a second time, he went slower, ignoring the rising anxiety and time pressure as he searched. 

The looming deadline became too much, he wasn’t done yet. If worse came to worse, he could dress down, even if he had been looking forward to this for a few months. Reluctantly, Hunk went into the bathroom to borrow his mother’s kohl eye pencil to do simple eye make up for the costume. And then he spotted the fangs, sitting in their mini coffin case next to the toothbrush holder. 

“Oh thank god.” He grabbed them and placed the two singular fangs over his canines, wriggling them a little to test durability. They’d have to do. He flashed himself a toothy smile in the mirror to show off the accessory, then moved out of the room as he tied his headband ribbon around the length of his hair for a loose ponytail. The timer went off just as he made it past his sister’s room and managed to dodge out of the way when she came bumbling out at the sound, alerted to the signal it was almost time to go. Hunk pulled on oven mitts after switching the oven off and removed the pie. But the pie was - obviously - hot, so he couldn’t exactly carry it to Lance’s place.

He didn’t think this through. 

His sister hopped about impatiently, and that was the point where he decided to carry it oven mitts and all. It was placed on the bench so he could cut two slices out and put them in the fridge for his parents later. The oven mitts were back, a kitchen towel placed over the pie and the Garretts made their way to the McClain household, Leilani ringing the doorbell since Hunk’s hands were occupied.

It wasn’t unheard of to spot other humans out wandering the wastes, but with how much space there was to cover it WAS fairly uncommon.

—Which was why Keith was lucky to have stumbled upon someone else out there, because he was »THIS CLOSE« to collapsing from dehydration.

Pulling up close, he brought his speeder to a halt beside the guy, pushing his goggles up to his forehead to see him better.

“Hey,” with a raspy voice, drudged up from a dry throat, he struggled to call out over the hum of the whirring engine;

                                     “I’ll give you a ride for some water?”

They weren’t far from a settlement, but Keith had no money to BUY a drink, and definitely couldn’t contend in a brawl-house to earn cash until he replenished himself.

Well, if ever there were a way to go. 

Immediately, the thought that he was about to be run down, or robbed for the supplies in his backpack, crossed Hunk’s mind. Which really, given the kind of scavengers he knew, wasn’t much of a stretch.

--But the speeder was pulling up beside him (what a nice vehicle, damn--), and the guy was rasping an offer that usually he would refuse.

With one glance the guy’s way, Hunk just knew he wasn’t about to be one of those hitchhike victims people boasted about in the taverns to scare the weaker hearted.

He wasn’t actually that far from his place, just a few hours walk. He didn’t need to know that.

A calloused finger came up to his face, crooked against the edge of the bandanna covering half his face and pulled down, simultaneously the other hand pulled his mechanic goggles up to his forehead. 

“Sure, where you headin’?” 

 Untying the rolled up pack slung low on the small of his back, Hunk pulled out a canteen and went to throw it to the other-- but thought better of it and instead held it out to him. Scenarios flashed in his mind, he could drive off now that he had what he wanted and take it all, leaving Hunk short for the rest of his walk.

But something made him want to trust him. A something he used to have, and he wasn’t sure if that was a good thing or not.

Glad to see Hunk looking more relaxed, Shiro merely shook his head to indicate again that no, going the wrong direction hadn’t thrown him off the trip at all. Dropping the potential fruits into the opened bag, he moved back to grab just a few more while Hunk continued to speak–might as well make the number they have worthwhile just in case the things were okay to eat, right?

Listening to the Yellow Paladin talk just a bit about his life back home had Shiro smiling a bit wider, though. Just Hunk’s tone of voice and smile alone made it something he was happy to hear, but the fact that it allowed him to learn more about him made it even better. Of all the other Paladins, Hunk was the one Shiro knew the least about. Keith was his brother, he’d watched the kid grow up; Pidge’s brother was his best friend, he’d worked with both Matt and her father; Lance had little to no filter and talked about his life at home now and then, and he’d opened up even further to him not too long ago. Shiro knew them all relatively well, though on varying levels, but Hunk was still something of a mystery.

“Really?” He asked, turning back to drop a few more of the questionable berries into the bag. “That’s interesting, I didn’t know you and Lance both grew up around beaches. I never saw a lot of them myself, but we did take the odd trip to a beach now and then.” And most of those trips had been pretty memorable. Enough so to leave him with a nostalgic feeling that had clung to him from the moment he’d exited the castle after they’d landed here. …If it had him remembering so much, he couldn’t even imagine what Hunk must be dealing with.

“…Must be kind of nice seeing one again.” Even if he wanted to keep the mood here a good one, Shiro couldn’t help but sober a little. It must be nice, but in a conflicting kind of way. The kind of way that might almost make any homesickness even worse. “–I’m still surprised with how much it looks like an Earth beach.”

Hunk hummed in agreement, but the sentiment was sobering. “Grains of sand are a little more on the larger side though, at least we know it’s going to be easy to get rid of any evidence we ever came here. There won’t be sand in every nook and cranny for weeks the way it would be on Earth.” It wasn’t fair, most of them missed Earth, Hunk had been coping with missing Hawaii for years before he even left the planet, being halfway across the galaxy shouldn’t change that.

Even if this time he had his moms and baby sister to miss, too. 

Oh.

He immediately stopped the thoughts before he had time to dwell on them for too long. Hunk took a deep breath, head tilted toward the canopy overhead and focused on the sun on his face. They were here, this was now, it didn’t do anyone any good to think about things they couldn’t do anything about. 

“I’m glad we stopped here.” Because he was, he’d rather have this time to reflect and indulge than to keep going on without a break or any time for nostalgia. “It’s nice. It’s kinda like Shay getting to see her first sunrise, except I guess this is a little more bittersweet. More like...” He was going to say Allura getting to see her father again, even if it wasn’t the real thing. But she’d lost him. For a second time. It was insensitive to compare the two. 

“--But lets not literally stop here, we’ve got dragon eggs to find.” After a tick, he narrowed his eyes suspiciously, side glancing at his companion. “... You don’t suppose that, say, since we’re on an alien planet and all, that they might actually be... y’know, dragon eggs?”

The gentle expression on Hunk’s face made Keith feel better about sticking around to chat. But then, Hunk had always been pretty good at making Keith feel welcome. Like his presence was wanted. He could distinctly recall the party with the Arusians, wherein Hunk had actually joked around with him and made him laugh harder than he had in a long time. It may have been helped along by the fact that Keith was giddy over their success against the massive alien, but still. Hunk had an undeniable aura about him that just promised compassion.

And if that was what it took to pilot the Yellow Lion, than no one was better suited for her than Hunk.

Mimicking the Yellow Paladin, Keith removed his helmet, setting it on his hip and keeping it in place with an arm slung over it.

“Yeah. I’m definitely impressed.” A brief pause. “When I first met you guys, I wasn’t sure what to think. You guys didn’t exactly exude expertise.” Another moment passed, then Keith finally remembered to add: “No offense.”

But he hadn’t exactly doubted them - they were from the Garrison, so obviously had to have SOME skill. Hunk had actually been the first to impress him with that franhuffer line. The more they all worked together, the better Keith felt about their group. Of all the people in the universe, he was happy that THESE were who he got to defend it with.

“I’m glad it’s you guys.” Keith and sincerity didn’t often meet - he was far better acquainted with snark - but when they did he saw no reason in holding back such comments. The good feelings should be shared. “There’s no one I’d rather kick Zarkon’s ass with.”

They really hadn’t instilled confidence in their capabilities in the beginning. Hunk bowed his head, gently shuffling his helmet to and fro between his hands. But the slight fond smile was there, they weren’t at their best yet, but they were better than they used to be and everything counted. Each little improvement, every planet saved, any monsters they managed to defeat. It all accumulated, and it would keep piling on until, eventually, they kick Zarkon’s ass halfway across the universe.

“Thanks,” Hunk began, needing Keith to know that his sentiments were valued-- that pretty much everything he brought to the table was, that’s what made them all work so well together. “-For sharing, it’s nice. You should do it more, the good and the bad.” Of course, he wouldn’t dream of pushing Keith into something he didn’t want to do. The silent offer was there, it wasn’t like they had anything to hide. 

“It’s mutual by the way.” Sure, he had downright argued for them all to run away at the first sign of danger, but he hadn’t signed up for it. Now, he was all hands on deck. “Who knows how long we’re going to be out here."

If Hunk ever wanted to express that he thought of them all as his second family, as ‘ohana, now would be the optimal timing. It would flow without sounding forced, but for once, he withheld. Not to keep secrets, but because maybe now wasn’t the best timing after all, some things were better off being shown than told, and Hunk didn’t want to overwhelm their dynamics. 

Instead--

“I’m thinking about giving Yellow a routine check, make sure she doesn’t have any substantial damage, do you want to come?” As it was, Hunk didn’t really spend enough one on one time with anyone that wasn’t in the original Garrison trio, let alone any that wasn’t for a mission or non-serious. 

Even if he was originally planning on spending some quality bonding time with his lion, he genuinely wanted to extend the offer to Keith, too.
