alternately if someone reminds me (on anon) tomorrow, i can share the code for you guys to make your own! there was some troubleshooting involved - i cannot promise it is the most efficient outcome, since i haven't coded in ages, but on a basic level it's just a random output generator that refers to an external .txt file

I've mentioned this story on here before, but I still feel really bad about it. so in my writing class, this older woman was talking to me about a book she read. specifically about how disturbing she found a scene near the end, where a dragon/demon/thing has evil nasty sex with a lady. and I was like "that's disgusting, please tell me the title so that I can avoid it!"

and then a few classes later, someone asked me what I was reading. without thinking, I said "oh, it's [book title]" and FROM ACROSS THE ROOM the older woman twisted around to give me the surprised pikachu face. I felt so guilty.

youtube is now one of the better places for scientific (and tbh historical) documentaries just because of the nature of financing and distribution. unless you're looking for wildlife footage specifically, the best stuff is from very focused YouTube channels. unfortunately you have to do the legwork of vetting channels but there's really good stuff out there.

I feel the same way about documentaries, and have gravitated to YouTube to find better content, but damn it’s hard to vet a creator if you haven’t specialized in that field or even taken a special interest in it. It’s easy enough to get away from clickbaity stuff, but how do you evaluate the relative quality of the better stuff?? Like I enjoy the Ancient Americas videos but it’s a field I’m otherwise unfamiliar with, so there’s always a sneaking suspicion that I could be led astray. The creator is a dedicated hobbyist, I don’t believe he’s accredited or trained in history, archeology, or some related field. But he is always referencing books and scholarship and deliberately shies away from making sweeping statements or claiming undue confidence, which are positive indicators.

I would kill for a good YouTube video review publication. Just give me some kind of bearing out here.

yea!!! i have absolutely nothing against independent scholars and in fact really like them, but it's incredibly hard to FIND the ones who are on the level and use citations and etc etc 😭

I find that the most reliable indicator of someone who knows their stuff is frequently specifying the limits of their knowledge. Someone who says or implies that they know everything about the medieval era is lying. Someone who makes it clear that their specialty is mid-to-late 13th century French architecture and woodwork, so they may be wrong when they talk about the strategic implications of this castle's design, can be trusted.

oh absolutely! once I'm actually watching something I can tell if it's bullshit pretty quickly, it's just that I don't want to spend my time watching twenty minutes of various documentaries only to discover that they're shit and having to start over again, yk? i wanna be able to easily find stuff that I KNOW before I watch it is made by people who understand the limits of their knowledge and are honest and straightforward about the information they have to share with me :(
