What are your Terra Nova recommendations beyond Worst Journey and First Rate Tragedy? I planned to read Madhouse and Endurance after First Rate Tragedy but I can't bring myself to move on from Terra Nova :( it's been a week since I finished Worst Journey and I miss them so much already...sorry if youve gotten this question a thousand times before!
I love this question!!! YES STAY IN TERRA NOVA SADNESS FOREVER. we have fun here.
i would recommend after worst journey to check out some more primary sources!!! it's so fun to read the books and diaries after you've got those two main books down. here are some ones i like—
griff taylor's With Scott: The Silver Lining is such a delight and my personal favorite. so many wonderful anecdotes and character observations and also just seeing the expedition from inside griff's insane head is a hoot.
silas wright's published diaries are online as a downloadable PDF and are really wonderful, he can be so catty
scott's last expedition - in two volumes and quite long but it's great to get the owner's perspective (lots of insight into how fucking anxious he was all the time lol😭)
debenham's diary published as The Quiet Land is wonderful but not digitized so i recommend tracking down a hard copy!
there are others out there including ponting's, teddy's, bill's, and gran's but the ones above are the best places to start!
and if you want more secondary sources/books about the expedition:
the coldest march by susan solomon is a really interesting look at how the weather affected the expedition
cherry by sara wheeler is THEE biography, so good and a truly invaluable companion to wojo
i may be some time by francis spufford - maybe the best book ever written about polar exploration and the final section hits so painfully good once you're deep in the scott sauce
the birthday boys by beryl bainbridge - a very good novel about the expedition!
terra nova by ted tally - a very good play about the expedition!
various biographies including the oates biography by sue limb, the george seaver bios of bill and birdie, everything by anne strathie and katherine macinnes
books about the historiography/reception of the expedition by max jones & stephanie barczewski
a lot of these are linked in in the big heroic age notion along with more diaries and articles and resources!!!!! ENJOY!!!
David Kajganich: My favorite moment of the whole sequence is when it’s over and you’re closing in on Crozier. Who knows what he’s thinking? In that moment, it might be that he’s now in command of the expedition. Or he might be thinking, does the way this happened have anything to do with how we buried this Inuit man? There’s a lot he could be thinking, but it was always important to us, as far back as the writers’ room, to make sure we weren’t answering questions the audience didn’t need answered.
Man Proposes, God Disposes.

THE TERROR ▸ 1.10 we are gone
crozier finds a seal hole and sits before it. he binds his thighs with cord to keep his legs still, settles his breathing, and begins to wait in perfect silence with his harpoon. in no time, the boy is sleeping against his leg. crozier watches and waits. he may be here a long while. but he has learned these last years to be more still. more patient. and quieter. quieter even than the snow. END.
