Everybody say "thank you south america" for the humble potato
Actually let's get specific with it
*checks wiki*
Everybody say thank you indigenous people of present-day southern Peru and extreme northwestern Bolivia from 7-10,000 years ago for the humble potato
This.
Like, I very much appreciate people trying to be mindful of their consumption and trying to be sustainable. But I need y'all to understand that it literally does not matter. The top 10% are doing more damage than all of us together could ever prevent.
you know, until we remember what to do with rich bastards.

I do enjoy a good visual gag, and an old favorite of mine is “there is Math on a Board in the background that contextually makes no sense.” This broadly comes in 3 flavors I enjoy:
• the board is in front of a classroom, and the Math is waaay too advanced for whatever level of pupil these kids are supposed to be; like having the calculus integral in front of kindergartners, or relativistic physics in front of high schoolers.
• the board is in front of Criminals, who are Planning Something, and by all rights there ought to be no Math there to begin with. Like. You’re planning a Heist why do you have the Full Lagrangian on there. Are we taking a rocket to the bank.
• the characters are super-genius science fiction people. The Math is “Pi≈3.24” with an unlabeled pie chart.
we must get through it Thursday
? that’s not the picture i pasted but ok
The older I get, the stayer I home.
I fully understand why describing a character of an unclear ethnic background as "ambiguously brown" is Not Good, but I started thinking about how the more you narrow it down, the funnier it gets to describe a character as "ambiguously" something.
"Ambiguously brown" - frankly that's just lazy, that could be anywhere. Just say "brown" if you really have to.
"Ambiguously African" - okay you have a vague guess of a continent
"Ambiguously Central Asian" - plausible to narrow down on sight if you're very familiar with people from around this region
"Ambiguously Baltic" - this mf is either Latvian or Lithuanian, and I am intrigued by the fact that your estimate is this precise but you still aren't confident enough in your assessment to guess which one
"Ambiguously Grevenan" - if you can tell greeks apart that closely, then frankly you're just flexing at this point
writer: "he was ambiguously American"
reader: "so wait, was he white? black? hispanic? Samoan?"
writer: "in the low light and dense fog, it was impossible to make out, but he was definitely eating a burger."
Mentioned to my mom I'm asexual a couple months ago and today.... we got into the car and she hit me with, "So you use they/them pronouns now?"
I went, "What. no. she/her."
"How does that work? With she/her/hers and they/them?"
I stared at her. "What are you talking about?"
"Well you came out as-" and I said, "I'm asexual."
She replied, "Like an amoeba, I know."
"Oh. My god. No. Mom. It doesn't- it's not the asexual you learned about in biology. I didn't come out as a single celled organism."
With heavy relief, she said "Oh, it has a different meaning?"
"Yes, mom."
Replacing physical buttons and controls with touchscreens also means removing accessibility features. Physical buttons can be textured or have Braille and can be located by touch and don't need to be pressed with a bare finger. Touchscreens usually require precise taps and hand-eye coordination for the same task.
Many point-of-sale machines now are essentially just a smartphone with a card reader attached and the interface. The control layout can change at a moment's notice and there are no physical boundaries between buttons. With a keypad-style machine, the buttons are always in the same place and can be located by touch, especially since the middle button has a raised ridge on it.
Buttons can also be located by touch without activating them, which enables a "locate then press" style of interaction which is not possible on touchscreens, where even light touches will register as presses and the buttons must be located visually rather than by touch.
When elevator or door controls are replaced by touch screens, will existing accessibility features be preserved, or will some people no longer be able to use those controls?
Who is allowed to control the physical world, and who is making that decision?

Painted with a FUCKING PALETTE KNIFE?
Gets stuck in the past and makes a random village get way smarter and less violent in a generational sense because I keep smacking people over the head with a stick and telling them that it’s the devil’s metal whenever they try to use lead for something in my presence and there develops a very niche regionalized superstition that an angry warlock will jump out of a tree and beat the shit out of you if you touch lead with your bare hands
Gets excommunicated by the Catholic Church for telling people that they can banish the devil from their water if they boil it therefore saving hundreds of people from a cholera outbreak but I don’t care and keep trying to convince the locals to use soap more often
Meets another iseksied person in the far past and beats the shit out of them for participating in the slave trade and eating moldy bread
Gets seen as crazy when I say I’m distilling peppermint oil to banish the miasma but people start asking to have some real quick when the Black Death comes to town and I am unaffected due to my constantly minty fresh house repelling rodents and fleas alike
You’re not at all worried about being labeled a witch and burned at the stake?
Witch burnings were very specifically a mid 1500s to mid 1600s phenomenon and I went back further than that so I’m fine as long as I don’t try to convince people that the earth revolves around the sun.

breaking news! new beautiful photo of the best species of frog in the world just dropped
cochranella euknemos, 📸 nuqui_herping on instagram
for everyone in the notes lamenting that this guy is poisonous: they are not! they're just pretty :) since they're a glass frog, their major defense mechanism is being translucent and hiding their blood while they sleep so they look extra translucent and blend in with leaves <3
they put ~90% of their red blood cells in their livers while they sleep :) so they look extra translucent and leafish
do me a favor and plz reblog with your five most recently used non-face, non-hand, non-heart emojis
