"National Day of Patriotic Devotion"
Ugh, what a hideous combination of words. Patriotic devotion, what a dangerous concept. I bet people are kicking themselves for not thinking of it earlier. But here we are, with Trump naming inauguration day a national holiday, so letās parse this down.
National holidays are already something I really canāt get behind. I mean, sure, I donāt quite actively hate the 4th of July, but that comes with explosions, so I just passively hate it. āNational Holiday,ā though. I know Iām reaching here, but you canāt deny that the language hints toward nationalism as religion. You canāt have holidays without holy days.
Patriotic Devotion. Again, shading nationalism with religious sentiment. Devotion is a word loaded with sentiment and religious history. Devotion, this strange loyalty beyond reason, conviction in the rightness of oneās cause that people will beg for the chance to march through the gates of hell.
Dangerous. So very dangerous to follow anything or anyone so blindly, and yes, devotion is so often blind. And not just blind, but willingly, even joyfully blind. Patriotism thrives on devotion, because without a religiously flavored foundation people start to question their country, to demand answers for the inevitable violence. Without patriotism the status quo could never be acceptable.
Now, we know that this is a distraction. If we get all upset over Trump creating an egotistical and pretentious holiday we arenāt paying attention to those delightful executive orders heās been signing. Or his administrationās commitment to finishing the Dakota Access Pipeline. Or the repeal of the affordable care act. Donāt let him get away with that. Please, we arenāt that stupid, are we?
And hereās another thing. Remember the J20 protests? The day when everyone was supposed to call sick into work and school in protest of Trumpās election? Guess what that day is going to be recorded as now. Creating this holiday serves the purpose of sweeping our vocal dissent under the rug, reducing our outrage to a mere footnote or less.
Trump may be a monstrous egomaniac, but Iām not ready to call him stupid. Heās not the best at making a living off of his name as a brand, but he knows how to push the narrative. He thrives off of no such thing as bad press. Even now so many people look up to him.
Some have noticed that heās not their guy, but many have not and will not, because heās their underdog hero. Hated by the press, not afraid to spout hateful, racist, sexist rhetoric at the drop of a hat. Remember friends, burn your flags and kill your heroes.
