Let's talk about the name of the First Spinjitzu Master

A time of random thoughts

The name of the First Spinjitzu Master has never been named and is there even one? But when the ninjas with Wu got to the First Realm they had no difficulty talking about the FSM. Because in the First Realm, Ninjago's creator was also known by that title, First Spinjitzu Master.

So first:

The FSM created Spinjitsu when he was in the First Realm. Perhaps to as a way to fight in the Oni and Dragon War or is he just inquisitive and itching to create something?

Second:

He is referred to in the First Realm specifically as the First Spinjitzu Master. Which implies that after him there was still a master in the realm. After the release of Dragons Rising this question was closed by the fact that we learned that the FSM taught Spinjitzu to dragons in the First Realm.

Third:

The FSM even the spirit of the Temple calls him by that title. Maybe FSM doesn't have a name at all?

Yeah and everyone else could call him as the First Spinjitsu Master and his sons could just call the FSM "father". Translating to our reality, it's rare that anyone calls mom or dad by their first name. Usually "mom" or "dad" is used. So the Spinjitzu Brothers address the FSM as "father" but when talking to others they say "First Spinjitzu Master".

I say this to say that I know a lot of people like to headcanonize the name of the First Spinjitzu Master, but canonically he seems to have no name and that makes his life even sadder. He didn't have a normal childhood, even as an adult his life was full of sorrows and it seems like no one even bothered to give the child a name in the First Realm just so he wouldn't have to call himself by a title his whole life afterward. Either the FSM had a name but he gave it up for not very good reasons

Personally I don't see the FSM with any name. To me he's forever nameless and I like the way that fact conveys the harshness of his life. But still I have a headcanon that people gave him a name themselves to make it easier for them to work with the First Spinjitzu Master. And so the FSM was different for each person

I have a funny judgestion. What is his name *was* "First Spinjitsu Master"

Okay so like, First could be his first name. My idea for this is that oni name their kids by the order theyre born in (see omega) but first as a word is dragon is origin (see firstbourn) ergo the FSM's first name is oni tradition in dragon words.

As for Spinjitsu, i like to think thats his last name. He didnt have a clan becuz neighter the oni nor the dragons wanted him and so he gave himself a last name. At then he named the martial art spinjitsu also. Hmm or maybe he gave himself a last name only after inventing spinjitsu? As in a blacksmith getting the name smith yk? Either way that would put his actual name as just "First Spinjitsu"

So if we assume the oni and dragons speak difrent langueges from the humans, which like the oni cave painting would support (nvm march of the oni lets just say they can understand every languege becuz theyre shapeshifters that infiltrate, magic♡) then its possible that Master is just a title, like Master Wu, but since he was named at a time where there was only oni and dragon languege the title got added to the end since some langueges irl do that. So if it was accuretly translated nowdays then it would be Master First Spinjitsu. or just "Master Spinjitsu"

This also explains why Wu and Garmadon both only have 1 name, their last name was Spinjitsu but theyve found that telling people that gets a chukle. Now why does Lloyd have the last name Garmadon? Simple. Misako thought Garmadon was Garmadons last name 🙏

Do you think lloyd can shapeshift? And if so does he do it to appear human to the public or harumi (before she drops the nice act ofc)

took a month to get to this but here we are. i originally wrote this back then, but then it go buried in my drafts. and then i rewrote it multiple times and deleted half of it because i can't stop overthinking.

canonically? probably not. in my own headcanon version of ninjago? absolutely.

i can't remember if i wrote this next part in a post or a fic, but i think i wrote it in a fic i haven't finished yet and idk if i ever will.

the way i think lloyd's shapeshifting would work is that he can transition between his true form and the "more human looking one", but those are all he can do, or he's just scared to try because he's afraid he'll mess himself up somehow.

his hair starts darkening, and he bleaches it instead of trying to shapeshift it to be different, because after he, as a kid, came up with his human form, he's only known how to do that one. it raises less questions anyway, if he looks consistent and doesn't suddenly change.

also, maybe he shapeshifts in his sleep sometimes, and is scared that one day he'll wake up and his face will be all messed up. sometimes he looks in the mirror and it looks off, so he asks zane if his face is weird somehow, and the answer is always "it's the same as before".

idk if i've yapped before about lloyd kinda, losing his identity to the identity of the green ninja a bit sometimes, (and idk if this makes sense to people unless i explain my thought process but i hope it does) which is kinda why i write that he doesn't want to change his face for example, because what if he forgets how to change it back. what if he forgets his own face? sure, he could try to imitate it from pictures or something, but is it really him anymore at that point? it's just an impression, just like in the minds of every individual person who's ever seen him.

i think if lloyd shapeshifted to appear human only in public, and like, in s6 with that whole deal of being famous and all, it would raise some eyebrows if he was then seen not very human looking. like, idk, in True Potential (s8e9) when he doesn't think he's being seen.

also i'm thinking about that scene in the first few episodes of NDR where somebody doesn't recognize him next to his own portrait and how in the crossroads he wouldn't be as much of a stand-out no matter how he looked.

it's funny to think about the ways arin, sora, riyu etc could find out about all kinds of lloyd's secrets/things he never bothered to mention, but also it's even funnier for me if arin knows all kinds of things about lloyd and the ninja from, say, ninja fan forums and whatnot. ("top 10 ninja facts you might not know, number 7 will shock you!") and sora has no clue about any of this. arin doesn't have the full story, but when they find out something like "lloyd can shapeshift" sora is like "what is with this guy and not giving us basic info about himself. next he's gonna tell us he's from the moon or something" and arin is like "WAIITTT that one blog post we argued about with frak back in the day makes SO MUCH SENSE NOW".

also i imagine arin telling sora the history of the ninja like i tell my unfortunate friends the plot of ninjago. "and then he turns yellow and he goes inside his possessed dad's mouth and explodes and this makes his dad good again." sora probably thinks everything in ninjago is absolutely crazy because arin explains things in a way that makes no sense.

even though i'm pretty sure zane has said "all my dreams come true", implying that he only has prophetic dreams, i like to think about zane having very silly dreams and waking up trying to figure out whether all his friends will actually turn into Random Brand's Appletastic Apple Juice from that one insufferable ad that keeps getting played whenever riyu listens to dance music in the courtyard. eventually he realizes it wasn't prophetic, thank the sources, writers of destiny, and master wu's dad.

I Am Not Your Asian American Doll: a comic for AAPI Heritage Month 2023

I usually spend a lot of time editing and fine-tuning my comics so that they come across as polite and inoffensive. But honestly, I’m really tired of the way Asian cultures and countries are treated / talked about while Asian people themselves are excluded, and thought it was about time I really let my rage out lol.

“I Am Not Your Asian American Doll” turns one year old today! To honor its anniversary and this year’s Maysia I’ll share some of the artistic choices behind the comic.

My main inspiration was the work of feminist artist Barbara Kruger, who you may know from “your gaze hits the side of my face” and “you construct intricate rituals which allow you to touch the skin of other men.” I wanted to pair really shocking, striking words with high-contrast monochrome images as she did.

I chose eyes (and lack thereof) as a central motif. In conversations about art and media history, the “gaze” of the audience is a way to exert power. Who is made into the passive subject, and who gets to be the all-seeing viewer? Who is the subject being portrayed for? Hiding the Asian figures’ eyes demonstrates their lack of agency and establishes them as the subject rather than the viewer.

The skyline on page 5 includes Namsan Tower, as some readers pointed out. (You may have also been clued in from the page’s respective alt text, which describes this as the Seoul skyline.) Though numerous Asian countries have been victims of imperialism several times over, Korea was specifically in mind here. It was Western powers who Korea was split into the North and South, and their colonization and exploitation has led to extreme poverty even today, despite the country’s glamorous facade and rising international stardom.

As many guessed, pink was chosen for its association with sexualization and femininity, although of course fetishization of Asian cultures affects all genders. I also wanted to pick a dark, shocking pink that reminded the viewer of blood; in fact, it is used to color blood here on page 6. I was really happy that the color palette was limited but still legible. (But drawing the large food spread on page 4 with only three shades of pink was definitely a huge challenge.)

Here are some thumbnail sketches I made when planning the comic. You can probably recognize some of the final pages — and see how others evolved!

I want to thank everyone for their overwhelming support for this comic. I never could have dreamed of such an amazing response. To my Asian siblings across the world, you made me feel less alone. To non-Asian allies who lent me their ear, thank you so much for standing with us and listening to our struggles.

Usually I’m extremely careful to write my comics in a palatable tone, but for this piece I decided to not restrain my anger. I understood that by making this decision I would be sacrificing readership, and that many people would be much less willing to listen to me because of my tone. Nevertheless, I truly believe that any and all of the harassment I received was a small price to pay for such an honest piece to be seen.

Speaking as a childhood Harry Potter fan, the enduring persistence of its popularity including amongst adults is 100% because it is slop without substance.

It flirts with the idea of rebellion and emancipation from slavery but ultimately discredits those notions by having the rebel leader become a lead cop in the institution that was repressing him and by making emancipation seem silly.

It reflects the chauvinisms of a British aristocrat who offers an impossible narrative of an abused child escaping abuse through the purity of their Aryan magic blood. It’s a fantasy that doesn’t even pretend to offer catharsis or self-actualization, merely hundreds of pages of occasionally racist drivel about a special little boy who joins the SS after reforming them from the inside.

That’s why it has maintained such reverence - because it doesn’t actually offer a subversive story but the aesthetic of one while reflecting the conservative biases of the author. It speaks to a certain liberal perspective that is progressive only so far as the oppressed don’t hurt their feelings.

So my sister wants to start sewing more, because

a. She’s 5′ 11″ and can never find pants long enough for her legs or shirts long enough for her arms.

yeah I went to a gay bar recently with my husband tumblr user beemovieerotica, and a VERY confused capital S Southerner straight man in cargo shorts and a trucker hat showed up

apparently he (who through my drunken memory I remember only as Earl) liked some woman, and she told him that he wasn't cultured enough and needed to attend his first drag show (she also flaked on him)

Now I'm reasonably androgynous and was wearing makeup, a short leather skirt, and black heeled boots, but still when this guy came up to me when I was standing off alone and asked "So. Do you come here often?" with a very earnest expression, I thought. Surely not. This guy doesn't think I'm a straight woman does he????

Anyway I start talking with this guy and he has no idea what the fuck is going on but he is just a very kind and earnest dude and asked a lot of questions (while asking if it was alright if he asked those questions). I track down my husband and friends and I'm like y'all. We need to make sure that Earl has a Good Fucking Time tonight.

Man was completely out of his depth. At one point they put on a puppy auction to raise money for Pride, that started with a 6 ft drag queen in all her glory leading a leather pup out on a leash to the tune of that damned RSPCA "in the arms of the angels" song

We look at Earl. Nervous. He squints, laughs, and then goes "I was wondering why people were dressed like that!" He turned to me and asked "So they're like dogs?" And I said yeah pretty much. And he just chuckled and went "Yeah I thought so with the tails! Never seen this before!"

When the first drag king came out, Earl looked at me wide eyed and went "There's a dude version too?!" And I said yeah they're called drag kings. And he said, low, "Drag kings."

During one of the queens performances, he frowned, shook his head and told me, "Your legs are better than hers." in a tone that implied he thought there was some travesty taking place and I should also be getting paid

When he found out I was there with my husband (and that I am not a woman) he profusely apologized and said "I'm so sorry, it's dark in here and I thought you were a hot chick! I wouldn't have said nothing if I knew you had a husband, I'm so sorry about that."

When beemovie invited me to the dance floor with him later and I still had a drink in my hand, Earl said "Oh don't worry about that I can hold your drink, you get on out there and shake your ass with your husband!" Then before we left, Earl bought me drinks for "Putting up with me all night and answering everything. Y'all helped me have a great time tonight."

like. You gotta recognize there's going to people who have never had interacted outside of their of their own community. This includes you. And just because your community is familiar with all the right vocabulary and how to correctly say something, it doesn't mean they're actually going to support you. If someone like Earl shows up, confused and out of their depth but kind and curious and earnest, you gotta have patience and truck through the small things, so when he goes back to his friends and his coworkers and they snicker asking how the drag show was, he can genuinely talk about how included we tried to make him feel and that he had a great time

I think some of the worst damage to leftist causes is done by that specific set of people who claim that they care about marginalised groups and the prejudice they face, but whose principle activism consists of using progressive language to pick fights with people from up on their home-made moral high-horse.
