Cellar spider (aka daddy long leg)

These long legged friends are commonly known as daddy long legs.but they aren’t the only ones to hold that name. Harvestmen and crane flies are also called daddy long legs. Neither of which are technically spiders.

Cellar spiders while harmless to humans carry the most venom for size out of any other known spider.

Their nests tend to be looser then other spiders, and they tend to prefer darker setting to live as they are nocturnal.

These guys are a always a fright when people see them, despite their big size (5.9-12 inches) they don’t hold any venom harmful to humans.

Some species of huntsman have been spotted eating lizards.

The largest species of spider ever discovered is alive today, most spiders in the fossil record are very small, despite there being huge insects at the time. So we don't have an upper bound on spider size. They may keep getting bigger. They just need the right prey.

Green fangs spider - Phidippus audax

These lil babes are native to North America. They are actually New Hampshires state spider!

Phidippus audax means “bold jumping soider” and is described that way because Nicholas Marcellus Hentz who found the spider said it was "very bold, often jumping on the hand which threatens it".

Here’s a variation of it with orange spots!

Fun facts about spider “hairs” below!

(I was talking in the car with somebody the other day about tarantulas. She read off info about their hairs/setae to me! So this post is inspired by that conversation ^^)

Urticating hair/setae are a defense mechanism used by spiders, and more often tarantulas! Other creatures like caterpillars and plants have something similar!

They act as whiskers to sense vibrations in the air or things going on around them,they also help spiders grip surfaces.

When threatened tarantulas and spiders can detach these setae to irritate or ward off an attacker, infact they can flick these hairs off of themselves. To me that’s cool as hell. They are like little spider ninjas!

Spiny orb weaver

These lil friends are completely harmless to people, in fact the majority of orb weavers are!

Spiny orb Weaver females are a lot bigger then the males. Only the females get big spikes!

There WAS a big ass spider in my bathroom on the mirror. It’s gone. I fear for my life.

It’s time to call the church and become a nun I no longer am able to live in my house of horrors.

A lot of spiders are blind, so maybe it didn’t notice you!

… or maybe it saw you and now is hiding away and lurking… waiting..: till you’re at your most vulnerable.

If it’s waiting for me then I’m ready with a cup. I’ll leave it outside with its brethren. Or now it just owns the house and I can be outside.

Mayhaps it will go live outside and then you don’t have to go be cold. They probs miss their friends.

We do leave the windows open so eventually it’ll make its way back out with its friends but for now it can enjoy the warm house.

Wolf spiders don’t lay webs to hunt, they are active hunters instead! Compared to other spiders, their eyesight is quite good and their speed is key when it comes to hunting down insects to munch on.

However This doesn’t mean they can’t produce silk!
