Something I see getting overlooked a lot when discussing queercoding in historical media is that in many cases it's not evidence that the writers secretly shipped it; it was aimed at straight dudes specifically to freak them out. Depicting a male villain as sexually interested in a male hero reads as horror to the cishet male audience. Like, Venom didn't spend years and years being blatantly characterised as Spider-Man's creepy stalker ex because Marvel's writers were all closeted yaoi fans. That was meant to be scary – which of course doesn't mean you can't read it differently, but don't give them credit they don't deserve!

SamBucky feels soft and deserved.

Stucky is the epic hundred year love story with almost as many downs as ups. Those two will always be tied to each other. And I will always love them and majority of my content will remain about them, but honestly? I don't think they'd actually be healthy for each other. Not without A LOT of therapy and facing ugly truths. They've spent so much time losing each other and centering their worlds around each other that I don't know that they actually know how to just be. How to have each other instead of be fighting to have each other. Idk if that all makes sense. I think there would be codependencies and incorrect assumptions and sheltering and clingy attachments. And it would be messy and fucking beautiful. But would it be healthy? I actually have a hard time reading (and of course writing) soft happy ending Stucky. I love it for what it is, but there's a piece of my brain that says "could they really have this?" and also "did they earn this?" (sidenote one thing I ADORE about the 4MW series is that IMO it feels deserved.)

SamBucky on the other hand... They start out trying to kill each other. There's nowhere to go but up. They start messy. But they trust each other and maybe partially because they both trusted Steve and Steve trusted both of them. And they end up giving each other a lot of raw honesty and tough love. Sam brings Bucky peace. Sam makes Bucky want to do the hard things so he can have the easy things. I've written fucking poetry about what Sam does for Bucky and his growth (#fivecrazyraccoons poetry will find it for you if you're interested).

I wasn't always on board with SamBucky. It grew on me slowly. But I love them so much now.
