First of all, I am not a native English speaker so I apologize for any mistakes.
I am glad to be one of the people who had their lives changed because of Sherlock. Well, it wasn’t a major change for me, or at least it isn’t now, but this show has planted a seed in my soul that will keep growing even if the show stops. Here is my story :
I don’t remember the exact reason that made me watch Sherlock for the first time, but I remember being extremely bored and the fact that many whovians were into Sherlock too was another factor. So I watched the first episode one morning and since then I couldn’t do anything without Sherlock popping into my head. Luckily, all seasons had already aired so I didn’t have to susffer from the long gap, and I was able to watch any episode at any time. I watched 8 years of television in 4 days or so, and I told myself :
“Is it healthy what I am doing? How come I can’t take this show outta my head ? Well.. I think this is how joining a new fandom works.”
I was completely addicted. The mystery, the thrill and the enigmatic cases all kept me on my toes. I really liked the fact that, no matter how hard I was trying, it was impossible to guess what was going to happen next. The plot twists gave me goosebumps and the cliffhangers made me automatically go to the next episode. But the main thing that I was falling for was the friendship between John and Sherlock. I couldn’t even describe it with words. A unique, precious relationship. They completed each other in a beautiful way. They were ready to do the impossible to protect each other, and they proved it. The amazing friendship between the doctor and the detetctive was, for me, the whole point of the show.
*Back to the story* Sherlock was getting better and better. I loved it more after every episode. I loved S4 and I was confused when I looked up people’s thoughts about it. I didn’t know why it got that much hate. And then, I looked up why other people didn’t like Sherlock at all, and I didn’t know why it made me sad in a way. At first, I was hesitating to watch that youtube video in fear of not loving Sherlock anymore or not seeing it in the same way. But after a debate with myself, I watched it. Well, a few minutes actually because 2 hours were too much for my laziness. The thing is, many points made sense to me. I was asking myself :
“Why didn’t I notice that? Why don’t I ever question anything? Am I dumb? Oh wait, is Sherlock really dumb?”
I couldn’t find many reasons to love Sherlock that much.. And I started to doubt it. I couldn’t convince myself by myself, so I looked up opinions defending S4. Some of them made good points too. And I learned the lesson.
Before, I knew how to respect other people’s opinions, but not how to respect mine or even how to develop it properly. I had principles, strong ones, but in many other topics, I neglected my own opinions. I was scared of debating. I was shy, constantly thinking that I would be the only one that wouldn’t make good points or convince anyone. But this little experience teached me that my thoughts matter too. Now, I have a real point of view: Sherlock certainly has some flaws. Minor ones. But it is still the best show in the whole universe, at least for me. I love it for what it is. I love it for what mofftiss made it be, and I am beyond grateful to them for giving me another reason to live. I honestly can’t imagine how big is their imagination. Sherlock is unlimited creativity. Certainly with some blurry spots here and there, but then again, who doesn’t have flaws ?
That was my story with Sherlock. It had urged me to get out of my little comfort zone for the sake of something that I love. And I am very happy because it boosted my confidence and my critical thinking.
Another huge suport was the Sherlock fandom. I don’t have many friends from that community, but the creative content it produces constantly, from all over the world, is truly amazing and brilliant in many ways. Especially the Sherlockians here on tumblr, and the Whovians, too. I want to adress a little message to those two fandoms in particular: Thank you for everything. Thank you for welcoming me, embracing me, lifting me up and motivating me to learn Photoshop. I had given up on it a year ago an, seriously, who thought back then that I would ever learn to make gifs ?
