Thoughts on Thad redemption?

oh HELL YEAH. ignore the two other asks from weeks ago that i’m working on they’re going to take ages <333 BUT!!! i can do this quick & easy 🙂‍↕️

anyway i miss it 😭 like thad’s arc within impulse as it stands is so!!! well!!! written!!! and if impulse hadn’t been cancelled (iirc) he could’ve been brought back and given a more fleshed out unambiguous one!!! i love how he learns what unconditional love is through max and helen (& bart’s friends) and yet he resents bart and all of them for seeming to have it when he can’t. and the forgiveness from max’s end, bart’s understanding of him, the way he is allowed to be a 3D and sympathetic character in his own right, with his own relationships, even through the lens of pretending to be bart!!! i haven’t read tt03 so idk if he showed up in that but the flash: fastest man alive (2003) BUTCHERED him so bad like my god. how do you take a character that lets go and falls into the speedforce for who knows how long because the person he was created to defeat asks him if no one’s ever loved him before and twist them into. that. thad’s arc was gorgeous and nuanced and if impulse hadn’t ended Like That it would have been SO COOL to see where it was going!!!!

Soft baby Bart hc since I saw my niece :

- baby Bart is VERY talkative (despite it all being babbling) and will respond to people with babbles esp meloni and iris. Thus he is a part of conversations and will frequently be situated on either woman’s lap while they have serious discussions to which Bart sometimes chimes in loudly. Iris takes this seriously and holds a straight face but no one else can

- oppositely (not a word idc) Thad is pretty silent except for when he’s really emotional. He probably only talks/makes noises around meloni bc he doesn’t like other people (hint: he hates most men. Especially Wally. Wally gets no noises only stares of pure hatred) but even when making noises they’re very soft and hard to hear. I hc he’s a late talker even as he gets older and probably only speaks in short sentences throughout toddlerhood-esrly childhood. He will however babble baxk and forth with Bart when alone. And he will “talk” to his gangle of Garfield plushes.

- like I’ve shown in my art before baby Bart has an obsession with sonic and Thad has one with Garfield. They both have so many merchandise of them bc you know the flashfam and adjacent have spending issues when it comes to the kids. Iris alone probably bought half of their cribs worth of toys

- the moment Bart learns to crawl/walk it is over for everyone and he hates remaining stationary unless it’s to cuddle with meloni or iris then it’s okay. Thad is cool with just sitting around unless excited then he’s typical baby speedster behavior

If Mercury Falling were ever adapted into a movie, animated or otherwise, I feel like they would change the ending in one drastic way.

Thad would accept Max's offer, however he would accept it during the moment when in the comics he walked away leaving both Bart and Max to deal with the Speed Force alone.

In the movie, Thad would "see the nihilism of his creation" and would embrace himself as the hero he became.... by sacrificing himself to save Bart and Max.

The movie would end with Max and Bart wondering if Thad was still alive and forgiving him for his wrongdoings.

Everyone cheers how great of an adaptation it is and how it made the story better because "Thad died loved" when no, he didn't. He may have died on his own terms doing something he really wanted to do, for himself, for others, but he wasn't loved at all.

I always liked the idea of Thad's redemption Having multiple different endings because redemption doesn't exactly always have the same ending or outcomes, sometimes you get to live happily and sometimes you just fuse with a extra dimensional force but also just what kinda actions that were taken in the redemption at certain points that leads to said outcome

Again as someone who wants Characters to have a happy ending after so many trials and stuff the happiest ending (Thad while still having his powers deciding to stop trying to be a hero and live a civilian life with Greta and become a symbol to others who also want to redeem themselves) will always be the "canon" one just seeing other outcomes and endings just always interest me
