"Wasn't it hard for you to get used to all the noise in the city?"
⊰ Well, that’s an odd question.
“No, not at all. This is just another hunting ground. I’ve participated in public fighting tournaments since I was a child. Noise isn’t an issue for me,” she says, looking into the distance, almost reflectively. It was how she’d come to the empire’s attention in the first place, completely dominating every single tournament she ever touched. ⊱

“so nice to finally put a face to someone I’ve heard so much about.” (bulat)
⊰ Esdeath tilts her head down, her general cap obscuring everything above the midpoint of her eyes. Icy blue hues stare into the officer’s face. Unfortunate for him that she should be so near their area of operations, and catch him out.
“The Hundred-Man Slayer, hmm?” She says, her head cocking slightly. “This doesn’t have to be a hostile meeting.”
Her arms stretch out before him, unarmed, a welcoming gesture.
“Join me, and you will be pardoned, like your master, General Liver. He’s alive, because of me, and you can be too.” ⊱

❛ you must be lucky to avoid the wolf every time. but the wolf? he only needs enough luck to catch you once. ❜
⊰ Deep, cold blue eyes lock with the speaker’s. A raised eyebrow, a peaked interest at the phrase. A hand, cuffed with danger beast furs she had hunted herself, raised in dramatic fashion to line up with the middle of her face. As she speaks, it extends to the side quickly. Her posture straightens, a show of power and confidence.
“Death, wolves, whatever you call it, yields to me at every turn. I am the hunter.” ⊱

⊰ The sound of rushing water cuts the flowing melody deeper in the woods from reaching the combatants’ ears, the weakening effect slowly dissipating with a ring of the ears. The old man’s gaze intensifies, seeing the oncoming attack. With the swiftness of a young warrior, he tilts his form away, just in time for a stream of water to precisely nail the tip of the shade’s blade. A probe, really, to see if its attacks could be stopped by physical means.
The beast had an infinitely widening grin, sharp teeth exposing themselves. Every muscle in the goliath’s body tensed as he forcefully threw one of his axes from his left hand to the enemy’s right, purposefully missing and implanting the sharp edge of it in the dirt. The ground shakes, the utter force of it sending dead grass flying into the air. He reaches forward and tries to grab the defector’s right wrist, rearing his head back for a nasty headbutt. But there’s a wind from the side, an axe swinging diagonally for the traitor’s ankle.
The child, seeing the half-sphere form in the midst of the trees, lets out a maniacal laugh. He’d done everything he needed to, and had utter faith in the two of his companions. Just slowing their opponent for a tiny bit bought them the few seconds they needed to create the perfect trap. He leaps down from the branch he found himself perched on, positioning himself on the outside of the sphere. He’d be here if by some miracle their prey escaped.
On the borders of the forest, a rolling chill. ⊱

“You don’t look like… much…”
“So nice to finally put a face to someone I’ve heard so much about.”
“You aren’t what I expected, but I hope to be surprised.”
“Well… this is awkward… uhhh hello.”
“I’m failing to remember what I expected when I signed up for this.”
“Not gonna lie, you were incredibly intimidating at first… still kind of are.”
“We seemed to have gotten off on the wrong foot.”
“Seems that the rumors and reputation are indeed being lived up to.”
“So I’ve heard some things…”
“You were the LAST person I expected.”
“Sparring partner huh? I think I can take you.”
“Me? I’m not anyone particularly special.”
“Haven’t heard of you whatsoever.”
“I’ve known you for five minutes and I think we’re already friends.”
“You and me are gonna get along great.”
“This is absolutely not working out.”
“Clearly there needs to be some ground rules established.”
“You’re going to be my sparring partner?”
“You know what? I like you.”
“Not working out. Nope.”
“I’m sorry but looking at you doesn’t scream ‘fighter’ to me.”
“I really hope you can make a better second impression.”
“You get one more shot. I hope it will change my mind.”
“I’m here to apologize about before… can we try again?”
“Well this is certainly… incredibly interesting. Nice to meet you.”
"We do not EAT bark! You boil certain kinds into a paste to cure rashes."
“Hey, hey–you don’t need to get offended. Bark is high in nutrients, you know. But you’ve still got the palette of a dumpster diver,” she says with a smirk and a shrug, a bit of smug enjoyment at his bite. Esdeath finds herself a little bit glad she got to the ranger before any of Honest’s bootlicking officers did.

“I can’t say that I’m used to eating this sort of food.” Most of what’s on the plate is foreign to her, truth be told. The presentation is great, but currently, her taste buds just aren’t cooperating. “Maybe if I scarf the plate down it’ll taste better–”
i swear to god if bols let kurome help again “What sort of food are you used to? I’m sure we can cater to your tastes the next time you visit.”
what. a. blessing.
“Just photosynthesize if you don’t like the Jager’s cooking. You’re not going to find better.”
it’s. her.
xanican-exile:
That horrifying sound, something exploding, shattering and falling to the ground, made Venix look over his shoulder. His eyes widened, water had burst out from trees, as though forcibly ripped from deep inside their hearts. Water that was now speeding along the ground towards him.
They have a Teigu. He hadn’t ever fought someone else who possessed one of these weapons before. but seeing this sort of ability left no doubt in his mind as to what sort of foe he was facing. The empire was getting serious about hunting him. They must have realized that nobody but another Teigu user would be able to take me down. He shook his head. No time to think about that. Focus on taking them down.
He took a sharp turn to the right, hopefully hiding him from view for at least a moment, and hopefully increasing the distance between him and those rivulets of water. Venix had no interest in seeing what they could do if they reached him. But fleeing was the last thing on Venix’s mind, and he turned sharply once more, double back at the group from an angle. He was outnumbered, facing at least one foe with a weapon to equal his own, and all three were obviously skilled enough to not be taken out in his first blow, but he hadn’t been able to lose their trail before, he knew he wouldn’t lose it now. No, now he had to finish them off before they killed him.
Stay hidden, don’t get surrounded, strike fast, then vanish. It was a way of fighting that had seen him through every battle, even ones with seemingly impossible odds. A strange, haunting melody began to fill the air, and he forced himself to ignore whatever it was, as before, he didn’t have time to question it.
It was a repeat of his opening strike. Jumping in as quick as he could, and striking at the old man while the spirit slashed at the large one. But he did not break off after his first attack. He stayed to make a second, then a third, a quick flurry of blows to test the old man’s skills. The sword wielding spirit was slightly slower, vanishing after Venix’s first strike, and appearing again for another attack from the brute’s opposite side, in time with Venix’s third blow.
⊰ Through the shadows, swift as his little frame will take him, Nyau dips and dodges while blowing into that flute of his. A melody laced with a tugging, nagging desire for rest. A desire to just fall and sleep, to forget the world’s troubles and take a selfish moment of solitude. The little lad does not dare let even a glimmer of himself show, absolute faith in his comrades, in the ex-general he’d come to work with.
At the moment of attack, the large man in fact, did not aim for the spirits slashing at him. He brought his giant axe up and angled it straight down on the attacker themselves, right in front of his swinging blade to halt any further attempts at attack. As his axe hit the ground, a loud metallic clang sounded as it split into two. Now a pair of battle axes, he swung with his left hand around the leg of the man they’d been pursuing.
The old man made a quick backstep, acutely aware of the incoming attack. He noticed the axe-wielder’s move in his defense, and made a rapid adjustment of his own to defend his comrade. He remembered the spirit’s attack from earlier, how it had appeared just as their opponent swung. He felt the ring on his hand grow slightly heavy as his water cracked against the ground and shot straight up into the blade belonging to both spirits, offsetting their trajectory.
The brute did not totally escape damage though. Slow as the spectre may be, the attacks it gave still came from unpredictable angles. The water wielder did the best he could to offset the possible injuries.
“Annoying little brat, aren’t you?!” The brute said, almost in complete ignorance of the gentle trickle of blood down his back.
“At least this won’t be easy, winning by a landslide is a good way to get lazy,” he said, a playful smile on his canines.
The old man narrowed his eyes once more, bark continuing to be shredded around them, the grass beneath them turning brown, as water became almost like a rapid river, a thin and fast current encapsulating them in a half-sphere of death.
“Boy, we’re not here to kill you,” the old man said, “surrender and we can return you to our lady with minimal injury.” ⊱

⊰ A vast expanse of trees rustle beneath, a gentle chill of wind blowing their hair back. The general can feel the slight thudding of her heart in her chest. To be here alone with the one she cares for on a night like this. Something sparked within her that she had never experienced before, something entirely new that shook her very conscience.
Tatsumi, the boy she’d so luckily discovered. Or rather, was it fate that brought them together? She felt something special every time she looked over at him. She wish she knew what exactly it meant, this feeling. In the days, weeks, years he’d be alongside her in the Jagers, perhaps she could find that out, with him.
She turned her figure from the ledge she stood on, a hill high over the ground below. She faces Tatsumi, a hint of a smile on her lips. She gestures out with a long arm over the trees and stars.
“Tatsumi, what do you see when you look out here?” ⊱
