PROSPECTIVE CLIENT: I want a professional PHP programmer [for this project that will take about 10 hours]. I hired a cheap programmer and he ruined my site.
ME: Okay, [insert spiel]...Now, what's your budget looking like?
PROSPECTIVE CLIENT: A maximum of $40.
I just discovered Opera Mini & I am in love
I can keep the Kyocera Loft that I just got on Monday and was ready to return within 20 minutes of activating the service. It crashed the first time that I tried to access a "big" site, and then again, and again, and again. The primary purpose of this and any other smart phone that I have ever owned, is to browse the internet. I don't know how, but before I made it to the post office to return the phone and do something that I promised I'd never do (purchase a $200+ phone), I stumbled across Opera Mini and it's a lifesaver. The phone has not crashed once since then.
I knew that this would end in a disaster
The same client that I blogged about last weekend...yep, I'm still working with him. So, on Monday when we finalized everything, including the fact that he'd pay in full before I started, I told him that I'd have everything complete in four days-Saturday. He didn't pay anything until Tuesday. That same day, he took his sweet time getting the login info to me. This drags on until Tuesday night until it's too late for me to work anymore. So, I'm like, "Eh, I'll deal with you tomorrow." Wednesday comes and I discover that his server is down. He blames me and asks me to fix it. I tell him that I haven't even been able to access his site due to the error. I told him to contact his host because the error indicates that his server is down. On Friday, at around 11:45 at night, he finally contacts me to let me know that his server is back up. On Saturday, at around 9 a.m., he sends me this email: Is it going to be finished today since it is Saturday as you promised? I almost lost it. I spent a good 10 minutes writing and rewriting a rage-filled email to him. I calmed down and ultimately sent him this: The promised delivery date was based on the assumption that I would be provided all of the necessary resources to actually start on Monday. Your server was not accessible until late last night, so a delay should not be surprising. However, I'm almost finished. I will let you know if something occurs that will cause a delay. Still a bit bitchy, but not as bad as the email I was planning on sending: Are you trying to blame this on me? The delay was your fault, not mine. I was actually in the process of sending you an update to let you know that I'll be finished in an hour. But, since I'm so annoyed by your last email, I think that I'll make you wait the full four days that I PROMISED.
As any programmer can tell you, programming will make you swear. But did you know that writing C++ will make you swear considerably more than PHP or Python?
Developer Andrew Vos was looking for a weekend project when he decided to grab some one million commit messages from GitHub and scan them for swear words. He limited the swearing to George Carlin’s seven dirty words and then broke down the results according to programming language. To make sure that the popularity of one language over another didn’t skew the results, Vos grabbed an equal number of commit messages per language.
C++ takes top honors, but just barely. Ruby and JavaScript are neck and neck behind C++. After that it drops off considerably with C, Java and C# placing in the middle. Python and PHP developers are either very happy about using those languages, or perhaps just very mild-mannered developers. Of course just because they don’t swear in commits doesn’t mean they don’t swear. As one commenter on Vos’s post says, “I program in Python, but all my cussing is related to IE.”
It’s impossible to know how many developers are swearing at their screens while writing code, but if you’re looking for a less swear-word-inducing programming language, PHP and Python seem to be the way to go.
Even more interesting than the statistics by language are the actual commits, which you can check out on Vos’s GitHub account. Our personal favorite: “fuck it. let’s release.” Indeed.
I heard back from that prospective client that I posted about two entries ago and I find it hilarious that he, who initiated contact with me about a job that I have shown little interest in throughout our negotiations, is trying to dictate how much of a deposit he's going to pay. Ha!
Spending hours creating one of your best site layouts, then opening it in Internet Explorer for the first time.
Very seldom do I create mockups. I certainly don't create mockups for prospects who contact me when I have four deadlines in a day. I told this particular prospect what my schedule looked like and informed him that I would be willing to take on the job only if he first hired a designer to create the template. After negotiating a price, he proceeds to ask for a mockup. Are you dumb or just too much of a coward to say that my fee is too high? Either way, I'm annoyed. I replied, "I'm sorry, but I have a policy of not creating mockups before securing a deposit." I haven't heard back from him.

Sooo, this is basically how I just spend the past two hours.........
ME: Go to Edit/Settings.
CLIENT: I don't see it. It's not on my Start menu.
Okay, at that point, we had been working in Filezilla for about 10 minutes, so, I'm like...
ME (to self): ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME???? We've been working in Filezilla. Why in the hell would you think that I'm referring to your COMPUTER menu???
ME (to client): I'm referring to the FILEZILLA menu, not your computer menu.
CLIENT: Oh, I see it.
Ok, so after about an hour of this. Yes, an hour. A fucking hour...she finally followed my instructions and successfully changed the file associations so that she could edit the files.
CLIENT: My changes are not appearing on the site
ME: Well, I just looked at your edits and you actually just edited an image tag, so that won't be visible on the site. Try making another change.
CLIENT: Still not working.
At that point, I realized that even my changes aren't appearing on the site. So, I log into Cpanel and look around to see if she did what I expected, and yes, she did. The FTP information that she had given me was for a test directory, so I didn't have access to the main site, which is what she wanted to edit. In fact, SHE was editing the files in the same test directory. So, I spent another 30 minutes or so getting the idiot just to figure out how to navigate to the root directory. I don't have Filezilla, so I just had to walk her through using the file manager in Cpanel. What a disaster.
If only Tumblr had a “follow as” button for people who maintain multiple blogs. When you have multiple blogs under the same account, you can go to your dashboard and “log in” to your secondary blog, then browse Tumblr and reblog and reply as that secondary blog’s name. However, when you follow someone, it’s actually the primary account that follows. Your secondary accounts cannot follow. Come on, Tumblr. Add this feature. Or, at least let me change one of my secondary blogs to the primary blog so that I don’t have to start a new Tumblr account and repost my blog entries one-by-one. Yes, I had to do that…and I still have more blogs to do this for.
