This is part one of my reviewing of system tools and apps. In this part I'm reviewing apps/tools used for tracking alters and front.
The apps I'm reviewing are:
Simply Plural
Octocon (App)
Ampersand
The octocon proxying bot on discord will not be included in this review, just the app.
With that out of the way, let's start.

(UPDATE: during this post Simply Plural's shutdown was announced. This review is now also a way for me to describe the downsides and upsides of SP alternatives)
SIMPLY PLURAL
9/10 - Complex, but thorough.
Simply Plural is the most well known of the three apps I will be discussing. It's also probably the most well known out of everything I am reviewing (well, maybe Tupperbox or PK beat it....). And that's for good reason, Simply Plural is a very fleshed out and good alter/front tracking app.
A major drawback to Simply Plural is well, despite the name, it's not very simple at all. It's incredibly difficult to navigate when first starting for plenty of people. There's two different settings menus??? Alongside that so many features go unexplained!
It's also hard to friend people, and to see when you receive friend requests. I understand that it isn't a social app, but having even just a little bubble on the icons to check friend requests to know you received one would be helpful.
I will say though, the app is AMAZING for being in depth. Descriptions allow markdown including links and images. It also has customs fields which allows you to put any information you want. You can also use groups to organize profiles!
Alongside this, Simply Plural allows GIFs for both profile pictures (though only if it's a link) AND descriptions. Not very important but I thought it would be nice to mention.
Simply Plural also has many other features. Including in-app reminders, analytics, front history, message boards, notes, polls, custom front statuses, system chatting, and privacy buckets.
Message boards and Chatting are both ways for alters to communicate. Chatting is for every alter, and you can create multiple channels and categories. While message boards are sort of like DMs? An alter can leave a message on another alter's profile, and when the alter who received the message fronts they can mark it as read.
Notes are just that, notes you can leave on an alter's profile. It can be anything, including a journel for that alter or marking down important stuff that happened to them.
Analytics let you see a multitude of things, including what alters tend to front at what times, total fronting times, average fronting times, maxium fronting times, minimum fronting times, and amount of times fronted!
Front history allows you to see every alter who was in front at a time right next to eachother with bars showing the length of time they were fronting!
Custom Front Statuses allow you to add other things to front besides alters - we mainly use it as things to let ourselves know when we look back. Such as "We were in school at this time so front might not have been accurate!" or "These alters were in front but we didn't add them/didn't register them!".
Polls allow alters to vote on things, which is helpful if you all are making a decision and need alters to voice their opinions!
And then privacy buckets allow you to hide certain things from certain people. Such as alters, groups, custom front statuses, or custom fields! This is helpful if specific alters don't want to be seen by certain people, or if you want to share triggers for alters with only very select for people for example!
Simply Plural also allows you to archive members, which puts them in their own category of headcount and doesn't show them in the alter list unless you turn it on in the search. This is helpful if you don't want an alter in the list anymore (if they went dormant or fused or something like that) but don't want to delete their profile!
I do have some more issues with Simply Plural though. I've been using this app for 3 years, and I've realized something. I don't know if this is a bug or if it can be fixed, but MONTHS of front history are GONE, completely deleted. It's very irritating to me and I'm hoping it gets fixed in the near future. Another thing is there isn't a way to mass edit profiles, I wish you could mass select a bunch of profiles and put them all in a folder or archive them all. Speaking of archive, alongside archiving I wish there was a way to just.. not include an alter in the headcount. Without removing their profile from the list.
Overall Simply Plural is a pretty good app, but it can be very difficult to get started on and the layout is.. a LOT.
(Since the news of SP sunsetting came out, that is another downside. I recommend if you haven't gotten SP already, it's probably not best to get it now. I recommend checking out alternatives..)
OCTOCON
7/10 - REALLY good, but missing a bit
Octocon has been hyped up for quite a while as an alternative to Simply Plural. And I must say, I LOVE it! I haven't been able to go in depth with EVERY feature but from I've explored, it's pretty good!!
The journelling is really nice! I like being able to write both collectively and for specific alters! It's a nice handy-dandy thing to have!
Another thing I like is how simple and clean everything is, I got the hang of it in SECONDS (tbf I was used to Simply Plural.. but still!). It's easy use and it's comforting in that way.
A huge drawback though is there is no way to put images in custom fields or descriptions - I've heard this is to be added but for now.. it kinda sucks lol. Another thing is Octocon also doesn't have mass editing, but that's apparently also on the up and coming!
Octocon also has polls, where alters can vote! It's very simple to do and it can help with making decisions and getting other alter's input ^_^
Octocon does not seem to have a chatting feature or a message board feature either. I don't know if these are planned for the future, but it'd be nice to see these features.
I can't say anything on the friends feature really because I haven't used it, but from what I've seen it's very simple, clean, and easy to use. (This is from what I've heard so I may be wrong, but I heard Octogon only allows four Privacy Buckets? If so then that SUCKS a lot.)
A VERY cool thing about Octocon is stealth mode, quick exit, and pincode. When activated in the settings, stealth mode makes Octocon appear as a regular news app (that actually works!), and you have to tap the logo 3 times to access the regular app. Quick exit makes it so you can double tap anywhere on screen to quickly be booted out of the app, and if you have stealth mode on aswell it's go back to that. Then pincode lets you set.. well a pin to get in. With stealth mode on, it only activates AFTER you tap the logo to access the actual app, which is really nice!
Octocon allows you to add multiple alters to front, alongside have a main front. Sadly you can't add multiple alters to main front, but it's still a very nice feature!
Pinning alters is also VERY nice. For Simply Plural I've had to add special characters to "pin" specific alters, but it's nice to have it as a built in feature for Octocon!
Also, instead of archiving, there's "untrack", which keeps the alter fully visible, they just don't count towards the headcount anymore!
They've made it so you can import pretty much everything from Simply Plural, which is nice for us as a system with a high headcount.
Overall I think Octocon is a really solid app and probably the best SP alternative, for now.
AMPERSAND
5/10 - It's good, but it's clearly in early development
I'll start off with this, the fact that Ampersand is completely offline is a drawback for us simply due to the fact that we can't have friends on it. It makes it hard to share fronting and stuff when friends can't check it.
Though, the app being offline can be seen as a blessing. You don't have to wait for internet for anything to load or work, so it can be used absolutely anywhere.
I also love how thorough alter profile making is. Alters can have a profile picture, a banner, their own text color in their description, a custom description with markdown (including images!), and their own color that their whole profile gets tinted. Ampersand also allows for custom fields.
Another gripe I have is the tags. I.. really don't like how they function. Being able to import them from Simply Plural but NOT being allowed to have them nested has thrown us off on the app. A lot of our organization relied on it being nested.
Alongside this, importing from SP kinda.. sucks. I can't get more than 9 members imported, and I'm not willing to manually import every. single. alter.
But, Ampersand does have journelling and a message board! Which I really really like!
You can also pin alters, and archive them! And make custom front statuses. I am very thankful for this and I love these features :]
My main complaints about Ampersand are also stuff that will likely be fixed later down the road - Ampersand is very early development and I hold no hate towards the creators of it for any of what the app is lacking. I understand that it's early development, I just mentioned it because they are downsides.
END DISCUSSION
Honestly, with the shutdown of SP, I don't think either Octocon or Ampersand can fully cover SP at the moment. They are both YEARS behind when it comes to development. Though if I had to pick between them I would recommend Octogon, due to it being further in development and being able to import more.
Next part will be a comparison between the Octogon Bot, Pluralkit, Tupperbox, and /Plu/ral
