What the Duffer brothers did was explicit queerbaiting. At the end of the day, they are cisgender straight white men who have and will continue to inaccurately represent minorities. The Duffers did all they could to make us believe that Will is gay. But instead, without even fucking confirming it, they still managed to use his queerness as a fucking plot device for a hetero romance. It’s fucking ridiculous, and quite frankly I am pissed. I am not mad that we didn’t get Byler, I knew we wouldn’t get it. I am angry, furious if you will, because once again, the queer population has been drawn in, expecting to see someone who represents them in a popular show, only to once again be let down fucking spectacularly. We didn’t even get actual confirmation he was gay. And as two straight guys, they have no fucking right to try and showcase the shame that queer people used to feel. They had Will indirectly saying he was a mistake, and it is fucking awful that again, actual pain that queer people have felt, is being used as a goddamn plot device. I don’t care if it ‘isn’t realistic, neither is fucking monsters from a different dimension, correct? ‘But you have a lesbian’. Yeah, we do. But something I find very funny, is that in Season 4 alone, we were promised a love interest for Robin. Vicky got five minutes of screen time, if that, and our expected wlw romance was severely underdeveloped. Meanwhile, instead of focusing on said new queer romance, they decided to reopen the boring old (hetero) love triangle that not a single person on this goddamn planet asked for. We did not need nor want it. We wanted to see some actual sapphic representation, aside from Robin just having a crush.
